I’m in my mid thirties. Puerto Rican, lived nearly all of my life in 🇺🇸…. folks that know me well might think some of my musical tastes are “eclectic” or “out of the norm” for what the typical i fiancé’s where for me and my generation. I know NOTHING about Irish music…. But I know a powerful, GENUINE performance when I see one.. this is AMAZING.

When I was growing up in the 60's, we had an old record player, and 3 LP's, 2 Dubliners, which were my Dads, and 1 Guy Mitchell, which was my Mums. It was all we had to play, and they were played ALL THE TIME!, so this really brought back memories for me. By the 70;s we had a fancy stereo, and a lot more LP's, but after Luke died, my father never bought another Dubliners LP, and the 2 we had were played out, I inherited them when Dad died, they would be quare and crackly by now, but they are precious to me. 2 days ago my Dads cousin died, she is near the last of that generation, my nephew down in County Clare was listening to Luke Kelly singing "Thank you for the days", when his conservatory door blew open, his baby was sitting in his wee chair, and he started laughing, he looked like he was looking at something or someone, and he giggled for ages, we are taking it as a sign that Dad met his cousin, and he popped in to let us all know that all is good, and what better song than "Thank you for the days" :-)

Here i am sitting, watching the rendition of Raglan Road, with tears streaming down my face and i catch myself missing a man, who i have never met... what music can do to you... :'-) R.I.P. Mr. Kelly and all the other Dubliners who had to leave us already! Until we finally meet!

When Luke died, the band disbanded and it was quite a long time before they re-formed. When they did so, they picked as their first venue the little Scottish Highland village of Muir of Ord, just a short distance from my home village of Beauly. I was away at the time, but, on the strength of my love for the band, my brother and mother went to the concert where they were blown away by the performance. In particular, they were moved by Barney, who, on being introduced to do his usual solo, said simply "This is for Luke," and performed his routine with tears streaming down his face from start to finish.

Luke died 6 months before I was born. Im always singing his songs, and the words mean so much in today's world, as they did to those he sang them to back during his time. Nobody can understand another mans thoughts so its best not to judge. Luke's voice did more for the Irish culture then can ever be imagined, even after he left. Peace to you Luke.

I grew up listening to The Dubliners, The Irish Rovers, The Alexander Brothers, Jimmy Shand, and the like. It is sad that each passing away of these talented musicians means a loss that cannot be replaced. One can say what they like about modern music but to me, the music Luke and others played and still play is an ode to bygone days and simpler times. A lot of modern music is gone and forgotten but the songs like the ones played in this video transcend generations.

I remember the Day Luke Kelly died. I was in my mid twenties. Going out on the town in Dublin , in the Eighties was truly awesome, You would nearly always bump into a friend , or Someone you knew, which would lead to a long night on the Town. but that night of Luke’s passing, the Pubs were morbidly silent. I’ll never forget that eerie feeling, may the Lord have mercy on his talented Soul. Luke Kelly the uncrowned King of 🇮🇪Ireland. 7:33

He had undoubtedly a great gift as a performer (what diction!) but what was unexpected was his capacity to appreciate the complex emotions of a parent when he had never been one. Amazing capacity of empathy. We love his voice and passion. I was born and brought up in Dublin in the 60s and 70s and so regret never having seen him live.

I dont believe that's so rare it simply depends on how much time the individual dedicates to contemplating life and the meaning of......at least in previous generation.....sadly ...empathy is lost.

Luke Kelly died in 1984, and some of these recordings were made 20 years before that. I feel sorry for “Movin on” and his 3 supporters who lack the generosity of spirit to give credit to the incredible voice and talent of Luke so instead resort to criticising the quality of a video some of which is 60 years old. Pretty pathetic.😢

My dad was born in Limerick, and he introduced me to Luke at a young age. We often debated the merits of Dick Gaughan’s or Luke’s version of On Raglan Road, a close race. The part about ‘let grief be a fallen leaf’ was read at his funeral. A nice circle I felt. Luke Kelly’s voice is heard in my house every day, as are Kavanagh’s words.
