Is Lutron Caseta still worth it? Lutron is known as some of the best smart light switches, but they are definitely expensive. I will talk about why you might want Lutron in 2020 (or maybe not) to help you decide. There are also a few new Lutron controllers I will talk about, like a motion sensor, range extender, and Aurora paddle switch.

Thanks for watching! Do you use Lutron, or another smart light switch? **Update!** Apparently there is a 1 minute timeout on the motion sensor. Thanks to Arthur Lejawka who gave me the tip. It's under the first point under the Sensor section in www.casetawireless.com/faqs How you do it is hold down the Timeout button and the current setting light will start blinking but keep holding the button until all 3 LEDs start blinking fast. Then let go of the button and hold the button one more time to lock in the 1 minute time out. To make sure it's in 1 minute timeout just press the Timeout button and all 3 LEDs will light up. I tested it out and it works great.

There is a one minute timeout feature that is hidden in the sensors settings. To set this up, hold the button for the timeout time for 10 seconds. At five seconds the led will begin to blink, but don’t let go of the button keep holding it down. At 10 seconds all three LEDs in the timeout row will flash and the sensor will be in its 1 minute mode!

I used these to control the switches in my Optometry office. Two features that I use every day are the little button in the middle of the remote that lets me return to a pre-set dim level, and the second is the geofence feature. That was a bonus! I have it control all the individual exam room lights (two switches each), some other rooms, and the back office. When I leave, they all go off, and when I come back, they are on. This has been awesome and a feature I have not found with my other brands of smart switches. I can say I am not an expert, but I have installed some of these myself without any problems. I have over 60 different smart devices, thermostats, etc, and several Alexa devices. I have had no problems at all with Lutron. I also have WeMo, Kasa, Wion, Feit Electric and a couple of no name devices. Lutron is definitely the best of these. I think they are worth the cost especially in a professional business setting. My office is 3200 sq ft and the hub is centrally located and positioned high (important) and not near other devices other than a router. No connection issues.

I was working for Lutron for quite a while in their field service department for their high end commercial systems. The batteries do in fact last for 10 years sometimes even more. Picos are advertised for 10 years as well and I can guarantee, I have seen places with Picos lasting over 14 years. I am still working with Lutron panels daily and smart systems and having seen what is out there, Lutron is the best choice by far. I recently serviced a system that is in place for 30 years now and still working fine. Quite expensive products but worth it.

I’ve had the Lutron Caseta light switches for a couple of years now in about 90% of my house. I am disabled and use a wheelchair so they really come in handy for me. They work really well about 95% of the time, even when using voice activation with Apple HomeKit. Only a couple of glitches from time to time. I would highly recommend them to anyone.

Hey, I know I'm pretty late, but if you can respond, I'm working on something similar, a remote electrical appliances controlling solution for the people with mobility issues, So I was wondering what would your thoughts be on a hand-held controller (unlike conventional IR/Radio remote contollers), say a laser pointer to switch any of the applicances at home (With the initial work of mounting receiver panel above the electrical swtich boards) so, if you could tell, Let me know what you think about it, would be a valuable feedback Thanks

I built my house last year and went all in with Lutron Caseta for ALL my light switches around the house (+/- 25 switches) and wow !! It's the greatest really ! I love the scenes and the integration with google home! When I wake up I just have to say: ok google, turn on Breakfast, and my scene for the morning is now on ! The Pico remote are also really awesome ! I have one by my nightstand that controls my bedroom light so I can tuck my self into my bed with the light on and turn it off afterwards! They are a bit on the expensive side, but the reliability and the responsiveness well worth the price point :)

We've been using Caseta for almost 4 years now. Flawlessly the whole time. Our house was built in the 1920's and only has a neutral wire in areas we've remodeled. Our use continues to grow and, besides stand rooms, we now use it to control our landscaping lighting, Christmas tree, porch light, and interior specialized lighting. Besides standard their switches, we use specialized 4 button Pico remotes that allow use to set groups of switches to different lighting levels and associate them with one of the buttons. We use this in our living room and our family room where we watch movies. We're about to get Caseta-controlled window shades (!!) for our family room so that will automatically close the shades and turn down/off the lights when we want to watch a movie. Very happy with it and have recommended Caseta to everyone in our neighborhood.

Excellent video, over the past year I replaced analog switches in our home to Lutron Caseta, we have a total of 58 Caseta devices in all. I have learned a lot about the LED light “ghosting” phenomenon and ELV, Elecrical Low Voltage and ran into 3 rooms where this was an issue. I found resolution and hopefully this reply will help others. ELV or LED ghosting has do do with faint current running through the circuit where a low wattage LED should be off remains on or will flicker. When you add a standard Incandescent bulb to that load circuit flickering ceases, all bulbs operate normally. This is NOT a Luton Caseta issue, rather a bulb issue. Lutron is very aware of the problem and have posted a list of approved bulbs which have been tested to prevent this issue. Additionally, Lutron has produced a stunt capacitor part #: Lutron LUT-MLC which can be added to the load side of the circuit where any Lurton Caseta dimmer is installed causing a ghosting issue to eliminate fixture delay or flickering. I have also purchased the Lutron Caseta EVL dimmer which also resolved the ghosting issue with a circuit containing multiple Halo high hats. Keep up the informative and value-added videos you do a great job. You could do a follow-up training on how users can resolve EVL and ghosting lighting issues. Well done and Thank you! I have Lutron Caseta switches (about 10 switches installed in 2015 / 2016) and the products / app have only gotten better over time. The best part is the ability to write SCENES in the app that is actually better is many ways than writing the same scene in Alexa, especially when combining Lutron lights/switches and Sonos. Alexa allows these Lutron SCENES to be called from Alexa and they really work very well. You can even add delays between lights coming on to create very cool lighting moods and same goes for music. Highly recommend Lutron if you have the budget. Pricey but worth it.

I moved recently and installed Lutron Caseta switches throughout the house. I had been living with a few switches prior to moving for about a year and had absolutely no problems with any of the installed units. In my new house, I have Lutron Dimmers, Switches, and Plugs operating with a Pro level Lutron bridge and Hubitat. I use both automation and dashboards for controlling lights and pressing a "button" on the dashboard is almost, if not as quick, as operating the switch itself. In total, I have 9 Dimmers, 7 Switches, and 3 lamp plugs with 1 dimmer and 2 switches waiting to be installed. All have worked through Hubitat for the 5 months since moving. Expensive, but highly recommended.

I have 10 of these Lutron switches and Pico remotes in my home and they all work great with over 30 6” and 8” wafer LED lights. I had them attached to a Wink hub for several years but recently Wink decided to charge for their service. I added the Lutron hub and after finally figuring out how it connected to the switches it works fine - even with Alexa after some annoying configuration issues...

we have had Caseta in 2 homes now; we have had it installed pretty much when system came out (about 4 years ago). It works great, it is very versatile and works with pretty much any fixture type. I wish they would also introduce Caseta 0-10v compatible dimmer, but maybe in the future. Lutron's support is unmatched. Great option for anybody, reliable and versatile and you know you are buying from the company that has been around for a very long time and is a leader in the market.

Another great video, Reed! I'm going to end up with these switches eventually. Not 100% by choice. They just seem to be the best option since I don't have neutral wires in my switch boxes. I only have a couple of places that WiFi smart LED bulbs aren't a very good option, so it's not a big deal. It's just good to know that they are good switches. Thanks for your time and effort that you put into these videos! If all goes well, I'll still be around in 10 years to find out how long those batteries lasted. LOL On a positive note about battery life, I have an OpLink scurity system that I'm still using that's about 6 years old now. They are mostly CR123 batteries, but they have never been changed. I'll be updating the system before the batteries run out, I'm sure.

I have only used these in 120v 60Hz location throughout North America. They work but are limited by their outdated analogue dimming circuitry which Lutron has been using for well over 30 years. It's old and crappy technology that's very limited. Expect to loose about 12% of your supply voltage to the dimmer's antiquated technology. It was really noticeable back in the Halogen lighting days and still noticeable when you use higher end LED PAR20, PAR30 and PAR38 LED with super high output and high CRI. What you see with a voltage meter at the e26 socket with the dimmer at full setting is around 103V to 106V on a 120V supply which ends up taking the edge off high performance LED lights and making them look average. If you only using average, middle of the road LEDs and/or almost always dimming them, then it's no problem as you won't miss having 12% less light output to begin with. How Lutron can call these 'smart light controls' when they are still using 30+ year old analogue dimming technology is beyond embarrassing. Why not go completely digital when the light sources these days are for the most part digital?

Been using Lutron Caseta for 4 years now and love it, but if I was starting from scratch now I'd use wifi switches that can be flashed with Tasmota... especially since you can buy 5 wifi switches for the price of one Lutron switch, with the caveat being that a lot of my switch boxes do not have neutrals and most wifi switches require it. Lutron was perfect for setting up my first smart switches and I do love having the remote controls. Have remotes hard mounted in a few spots for 3+ way where there was no wiring, a couple by the bed that each control different light groups, one by the front door can turn on all my outdoor flood lights, one in the car to turn things on manually from the car (even though the app does geofencing as well). Too late for me to go back, but I'll be swapping a couple switches out for wifi switches soon and repurpose the Lutron switches that are getting replaced. Also, the hub integrates with Home Assistant with control being completely local (no internet requirement once set up) and the pro hub is not required..

if you read the motion sensor manual, 1 min timeout is actually available. :)

I installed Lutron Caseta switches throughout my house. They have been 100% reliable and the flat design looks premium. They take a short amount of time to get used to the new feel, but i love them. They compliment the rest of my smart home.

Why they don't make a regular switched plug to control accessories and remote switch for it?

Do Caseta products communicate via your WiFi network or do they use a proprietary signal directly to the bridge? The reason I ask is that I need something like this that uses the home’s WiFi.

Great video. Can you do a video for pairing a Lutron wireless caseta with the Wyze sensor? Would love to see that

Reed, have you done a comparison between Lutron and Leviton yet? Curious to hear your opinion.

Love your videos and really concise in-depth review/testing. I think we will have to go with a smart switch system. We have lights on different circuits and I need a solution that will allow remote access to combine the lights. Not all will be dimmer. My worry is the Lutron Pico lasts 10 years and his could be obsolete. Is there a solution that takes its power from the house wiring as we don’t have POE to the light switches sadly :( Any thoughts or suggestions gratefully received.

What about the tp-link kasa switches make you think it won't last as long into the future? I'm not a huge fan of "hubs", but I'm also interested in making the best choice from day 1 in terms of a smart lighting setup in my new home. Been leaning towards TP-Link Kasa, but I also don't see that it has a ceiling fan switch option, but Lutron does. Thoughts?

I used the scene program to turn motion sensor off and on. I used scene to turn porch light off at 10:00pm and then use motion sensor outdoors to turn porch light back on with motion. Then deactivate motion sensor before sunrise.
