What a difference 61 years makes. I live in south Bris that long ago for a while. It was nothing but a stinking hole .Fish markets dirty Pubs old coal wharves ,Drunks in parks everywhere ,Brothels, Now it is just beautiful .Progressive people with good ideas in office can make a big difference to any city .Later in life I worked in the railway & spent a while at the Roma street goods yards whit is now a beautiful botanical gardens.

Thanks for the video Chloe..very well done. We took the IP Perth to Sydney early March and last year the Ghan 4 day Darwin - Adelaide. We would rate the Ghan by far the best of the 2 so far with the Ghan crew and off train experiences and organisation exceptional. We were thinking about the Great Southern late this year....your video makes it hard to resist. One tip for sleeping......have had 6 good night's sleep on these trains. I find fitted earplugs (available at chemist shops) eliminate the high ambient noise completely. The bumps and rocking are less of an issue if they can't be heard. $12 well spent.

A less common train trip that would be good to look at is the Savannahlander in far north Queensland. Its not really a sleeper train, but more a train tour, where you stop in towns overnight to sleep, but it looks interesting and is more affordable 🙂

Great video. I have seen a few of this trip. Just be aware that continuity is important. You showed the Hawksbury River then a shot going over a river (the Parramatta I think on Sydney's outskirts then back to the Hawksbury. the other off bit was when touring the Melbourne Gaol all of a sudden back on board listening to an announcement about the upcoming stop and tours in Melbourne. Glad your Mum enjoyed the trip.

I experienced an overnight journey on the Casino to Sydney XPT recently. I couldn't sleep at all and I felt awful the next day. It was way too bumpy and I felt like I was constantly bouncing against the metal part of the bed because the mattress was quite thin. I had hoped that it would be ok because I am able to sleep on boats but boats are a much smoother experience. I would need a very good quality bed to be able to sleep on a train - probably the top class of bed on the Indian Pacific / Ghan etc. Alternately travelling by day and sleeping at other accommodation overnight. I still like trains as a mode of transport.

I would love to do this trip however, I am a widow and all my friends have husbands they do their travel with, m6 kids are all in their own relationships having babies etc. I am 62 now (widowed at 37), do you see many single oldies doing these trips alone ? As a pensioner I’m sure it is a little cheaper to travel than perhaps it was for you, can. How much was your trip approximately ? I’d have to use the double option to sleep as I wouldn’t want to sleep in a tiny room with a stranger. sorry.

You’ll be fine on this train! There were heaps of single people of all ages travelling alone in the gold single cabins. I noticed that they all became great friends and connected with one another. The gold twin cabin on this journey sits around $3500 Aud per person :)

Hahaha I definitely take after her - she is full of life and endless energy. I just adore her. I think I might've been the youngest! Or close to!

It's time to refurbish the interior of this train , it's so outdated.

Its dated, old and needs a refurbishment, given the exroidenarly high price $2,500 to $5,000 it should be much more luxurious, offer more in cabin item like a mini bar, toiletries, welcome pack of snacks, fruit, bubbles...those pillows sitting were your dirty bottomed suitcase gives me the horrors, they should be in pillow protector bags, safe from nasties....and the single supplement of ridiculously high at over $1,000 to $2,000 plus extra .... its up there with the journey you dream of but have to save 10 years for
