Web DM hi guys i figuied you might want to see some other DM's points of view how I do it is that their are 3 "levels" of lycanthrope ALPA: are lyacantrope who master the beast can shape shift at will and contol their beastal instincts they offten havr a flaw that keeps them a little diffrent from humans I.E. "I don't have qualms against killing if it seves a perpose, (any chaotic or nutrael alimanit) or my personal favorite is i protect my pack wuth my life and will be loyal to them no matter what" their are 3 way to become a Alpha your a child of werewolfs that are beta or higher your gifted it by a god/goddess of the hunt/wild or C you were a lower level werewolf that through arcane ruitual beat the beast and went up a level BETA: are simular to alphas but whis trasformations are limited by the moon or day/night cycle whatever i feel fits the campiagen better OMEGA are the werewolfs you guys detailed that are truly cursed Notes: if a werewolf is born the will go a level higher then their lower parent a bite from a werewolf will transfer the curse and make them one level lower than the person who bit them so alpha=beta beta=omga omega=omega This is just food for thought and I hope I inspired someone. thanks for reading, peace!

I think I have an idea for how to make Lycanthropy seem more threatening, instead of just having a 6th level Cleric throwing a Remove Curse on them. While doing some research into werewolf lore, I came across a bit of folk lore saying that a werewolf can be cured as long as they have not tasted human blood. I would incorporate this into the in game setting, so that Remove Curse only works on Lycanthropes who have not yet killed somebody. Thus providing a sense of urgency to obtaining the cure.

Page 206 - 211 of the Monster Manual. Because I'm feeling nice here's a quick write up of the base rules for lycanthropy on player characters, from the monster manual: A character that turns into a lycanthrope keeps their statistics aside from the changes made based on what manner of lycanthrope they turn into (listed below). The character gets the speed of the lycanthrope in nonhumanion form, damage immunities, traits, and actions that do not involve equipment. The character becomes proficient with the lycanthrope’s natural attacks (like bite and claws), and these weapons deal damage as shown in the monster stats. The character can’t speak while in animal form, but can do so in hybrid and humanoid form. The DC on the Constitution Saving Throw for a humanoid bit by a lycanthrope is (8 + lycanthrope’s proficiency bonus + lycanthrope’s Constitution modifier). A failed saving throw means the character becomes cursed. Should the character embrace the curse its alignment becomes the one listed in the monster stats. It’s up to the DM to decide what happens then. _Changes in player characters catching lycanthropy:_ *Werebear* (neutral good) The character gains a Strength of 19 if its score isn't already higher, and a +1 bonus to Armor Class while in bear or hybrid form (from natural armor). Natural weapons use Strength. *Wereboar* (neutral evil) The character gains a Strength of 17 if its score isn't already higher, and a+ 1 bonus to AC while in boar or hybrid form (from natural armor). Natural weapons use Strength. For the Charge- trait, the DC is 8 +the character's proficiency bonus+ Strength modifier. *Wererat* (lawful evil) The character gains a Dexterity of 15 if its score isn't already higher. Natural weapons use the highest of Strength or Dexterity. *Weretiger* (neutral) The character gains a Strength of 17 if its score isn't already higher. Natural weapons use Strength. For the Pounce trait, the DC is 8 + the character's proficiency bonus + Strength modifier. *Werewolf* (chaotic evil) The character gains a Strength of 15 if its score isn't already higher, and a +1 bonus to AC while in wolf or hybrid form (from natural armor). Natural weapons use Strength. I'm sure you can find, figure out or make up the rest :)

I really like the emphasis on the curse aspect of the lycanthropy. For werebears, I like to use the idea that they become bound to their specific forest. If they leave, their werebear form returns to it, as though compelled to protect it, and the only way to be free and rid of the curse is to "pass the mantle" of the werebear onto someone else, making them the new guardian of the forest. This also opens up an avenue of self-sacrifice/pseudo-martyrdom for characters who accept the mantle, and it makes it possible for them to come back later or possibly be freed of their curse if the party finds someone to accept the mantle in their friend's stead. I love the lore behind werebears, and I particularly like the aesthetic of the compelled guardian of a specific location. Thoughts?

When I was running a Norse based game lycanthropy was a curse/blessing from the gods, either inflicted upon people to force them to act in their lycanthrope Alignment or blessed upon people. Thor would curse or bless people with werebear lycanism to bring out the good in people. Odin would curse or bless people with werewolf lycanism to bring out their bloodlust. Yngvi and Frigg would curse or bless people with wereboar lycanism to bring out their feral/natural side. If your lycanthropy was a blessing you could control it like a "natural" werewolf in old D&D but the cursed lycanthropes couldn't control their transformations.

Firstly, i love the production value in this video! secondly, i'm a DM and one of my players (his first campaign) ended up making a Paladin (of the ancients) Shifter, flavored as a half werewolf. i plan on giving him a ring made of 3 powerful wolves or werewolves that allow him to use his shifter ability and be more like a werewolf. essentially giving him more power. the ring will be in 3 stages (unlocked as they level up) and i think it's going to make for an interesting game

Werewolf the Forsaken, from the Chronicles of Darkness, features shamanistic werewolves which are defined by their spiritual need to hunt and keep the spirit world in balance. The focus on pack dynamics and shamanistic duty could make for a cool D&D campaign.

When a player contracted lycanthropy I ruled they had to make a charisma save each night or go on a rampage in wolf form, on full moon you were forced to go on that rampage. The DC initially is the same DC of the Siring Lycan, but gets a +1 for each successful save. Resets the count once you transform.

KiqueDragoon Yeah, I was just putting in a touch of the dramatic. I was actually going to combine it with Jim's suggestion of losing it when blood is spilled in your vicinity. The world I'm using is based on a story a friend and I came up with years ago (before I knew anything about D&D), where Lycanthropy is actually a curse put on the main character, a demon hunter by a demon lord, and it acts more like an awakening and manifestation of one's own inner demons, like the Guts' berserker armor in Berserk. Figured I'd expound and share some bg now that I know this isn't just a super dead comment thread, maybe give some inspiration back.

I forgot what edition it was but there was a campaign in Ravenloft I played in that being a lycanthropes was a real big deal and issue. The desire to devour meat and also servitude to the 'alpha' while also dealing with alignment issues and other smaller details. Anyway considering we were stuck in the plane of Dread, one of our party members was inflicted by a lycanthrope; which we learned the hard way she was a were-tiger. Anyway issues we faced was: Her massive appetite (major warning because she never gained weight or a belly) Desire to prove her dominance over every situation Other Weres knew what she was and attacked our group constantly and unprovoked too She constantly kept disappearing at certain times or evenings (mostly for her bestial reasons) Hunters (some sort of special class) harassed or attacked us out right. Anyway we found out she was a Were-Tiger because during one of our navigation routes through castle Ravenloft, we got stuck in this one room after using or losing most of our rations due to various traps and enemies. Our dear Tigress was hungry... very hungry... even with 4 versus 1... she was a barbarian... with tiger like powers... yeah it was brutal but we barely managed to survive that battle but we all ended up becoming inflicted by the curse of the Were-Tiger and eventually began feeding off on the villagers of Barovia after killing Strahd in his own coffin.

If you're looking for an interesting werewolf concept, try taking a look at the werewolves in the Day Soldiers series. Although it's set in the 21st century and the whole "curse" thing is off the table, it's cool how the werewolves initially assimilated themselves into normal human society, but then, when the Seventy-Four (I think) came out and revealed themselves to humanity, it showed humans the defining characteristics of a werewolf in human form. Combine that with posers, who can perfectly replicate a human in their human form and are usually very rare and powerful, and with the fact that werewolves can (but usually don't) turn humans into werewolves by swallowing half of the human's heart and swapping it with half of a werewolf heart (the werewolf's super-healing heals the two halves together, and then essentially "heals" the body so that it becomes a werewolf), along with supernatural speed, strength, healing, hearing, and smelling, and I personally think that you have a pretty interesting race that would be both interesting to RP as (PC or DM) and interesting to use in combat. Check them out sometime!

Great episode as always guys! Love the set up for this one! The one thing that makes me shake my head with the 5e is that lycans can't harm other lycans. If I remember, in other editions they could. Almost all movies/books seem to have werewolves killing each other. Also, shifters from Eberron are Lycanthropes, but only half Lycan. A weird and awesome race, and I do like how they are built in the Unearthed Arcana they brought up, but I agree their shifting ability shouldn't be once per long/short rest.
@jimdavis141
@jimdavis141 7 жыл бұрын
Agreed on being able to overcome resistances. I find 5e very odd in that regard as it seems to have broken with many monster immunities or damage boosts while at the same time reducing the effectiveness of things like damage resistance and magic resistance. I think dragons were the biggest losers there, but clearly it's created other odd situations like Lycanthropes being unable to harm each other without silver or magic.

An alternative is that in the book, it says that carriers of the curse can either resist or embrace the curse. So another thing you could change is that if they choose to deal with it themselves and simply try to resist it. Then maybe over time the character will have to make less saves against turning and the DC of saves may gradually become lower with time.

I agree entirely with the idea that lycanthropy giving drawbacks of some kind. I actually homebrewed my own lycanthrope class that I am playtesting with my own group of players. I made sure that the player would have to make checks to keep control of their lycanthropy.

To give the curse teeth, I would say that for the first three transformations, it takes a long time and is basically like the famous transformation scene in An American Werewolf in London. Like, if you’ve ever seen that scene, that’s what it should be like to transform, at least for the first couple times before their body acclimated to it. Also, I would add a small change to the Remove Curse spell that it fails if the target isn’t willing to accept it.

I remember playing a Werewolf back in the early days. In kinda Warhammer meets DnD mesh setting, each of us was playing one of the "not so good races". So much fun I had with that guy (who eventually made his own small tribe). Werewolves are amazing, when one is willing roleplay them properly. Wish they were an actual playable race... though granted, you can always get bitten in the midst of a combat with one. You know... unintentionally.... like... absolutely not a plan within a plan or something :D Its the same as playing Orks in Warhammer. When you call for a Waaagh, you have to go all in and be like WAAAAAAAAAGH !!!

Great ideas. I like how werebears accept the curse is something to bear, no pun intended lol, and if they bite someone it's in purpose and usually talked about beforehand and then the werebear will take care of the curse victim for like 1-3 months during the transformations because the transformations are actually pretty bad and needs to be controlled. The werebears do this, teach control through proper use of their curse.

Movie-wise, there were a few werewolf films that proceeded The Wolfman (1940). The Werewolf of London (1935) was sort of a Wolfman crossed Jekyll & Hyde story, and The Werewolf (1913) was apparently a brief silent film about a Navajo woman who transforms into a wolf to kill interloping settlers. After the classic Wolfman film, there was the 1944 film Return of the Vampire (starring Bela Lugosi, of course), which includes a werewolf, but he's more of the main villain's lapdog, no pun intended, and in 1946 Universal released She-Wolf of London, which was more of a murder mystery/suspense film instead of a straight-up monster flick. It's interesting how there's so many films from that time that take such a basic idea and put their own spin on it by changing what light the main character, the titular monster and the people they interact with are all cast in.

The Were-wolf of London version looked more along the lines of a Shifter, with these long sideburns and a widows peak kinda like Elvis Presley. The one in Return of the Vampire might've been even hairier than the one in The Wolfman, but he mostly just acts and talks like normal human.

My fighter from a campaign that recently ended due to scheduling conflicts actually became a werebear. He was neutral good, prideful as fuck, and said that he was fine after he got bit. He changed a few times, but never willingly, and never in combat. Was still pretty fun to hide it. DM had a habit of having good aligned creatures owe debts to our baddies, and the werebear was working with a vampire. Was quite the fight, but I got infected. Pride was a good enough reason to not abuse it.

If you are ever interested I ran this following idea that made the wear type interesting as a story and helped maintain continuity for the players by explaining the why's and why not's:There was a city, Bayside, that was controlled by a were creature cast system. Werebears were the nobility, Werewolves were highclass folk, Wereboars and Wererats were the commonfolk that ran the shops/thieves guild/ and taverns. They kept to their human forms but obviously had features that were noticeable, Pot-bellies, odd snickers of laughter, beautiful manes of hair, or large and heavily covered in body hair. The players went through the entire session having no clue even with subtle hints dropped. They find that the city has a slave class as normal human and only through some version of labors or skills to they bite and accept others into this cast system (similar to knighting ceremonies). They were cursed by a forest god when they hunted all the animals from the sacred forest and this lycanthropy caste system was adopted. there is obviously more to this campaign idea but it made for an interesting reason to a lot of the points brought up in this video and many I've told about this have adopted this as a way to use lycanthropes but explain why they don't go around biting everyone and why they stay secluded.

You could balance out wanting to be a werebear as being compelled to do good the same way werewolves are compelled to kill. A werebear has to actively pursue the greater good pretty much all the time, making it hard to have a life outside that mission. Is the area you live in relatively good, peaceful, and stable? Your werebear curse pushes you to leave and find somewhere else that needs a champion. Still not necessarily much of an issue for certain adventurers, but you don't just give that compulsion to every random person who asks for it because it can still uproot and dominate your life, just with less eating your neighbors

In my friend's Pathfinder campaign, we were investigating a break-in at a hospital. After asking a lot of questions and finding a secret hallway of VERY SECURE compartments, we were told the hospital was for recovering werewolves, learning willpower exercises to resist the curse. The party ended up chasing a band of rogue werewolves who had been recruiting there. It was pretty sweet.

good way to go against a werewolf isn't with a silver or silver plated sword, but with an oil or wax that contains several silver particles in it so as you swing your sword the silver remains there, effective for very few swings but at least you don't get the debuff of having an extremely soft silver sword that deals the same damage and has the same durability of a bunch of sticks glued together with sticky leaves.

In the middle ages, in central/eastern Europe in rural areas werewolves were called "God's Hounds" and were believed to be protectors from evil and other monsters, including demons. In northern Scotland, werewolves were treated similarly, and even there was a tradition of living fish for them on windowsills. PS. First werewolves came to be in ancient Greece, but I don't remember how they were portrayed back then. I now for a fact, in middle ages, werewolves were portrayed similarly to modern times, as is, humanoid wolves that walked on two legs with hands.

I have the lycanthropy issue split into three types. There is the magical disease, turning the sick once per moon phase into a murderous semi-animalistic monster that is driven by sheer bloodlust that attacks anything bigger than a house cat. Anything that survives such an attack becomes an infectious lycantroph as well. There is no way to learn to control or suppress the change or ones actions while changed. Anything done while changed, and the change itself, can not be remembered later, not even by magical means. Then there is he cursed lycantroph who is turned once a month on the same moon phase under which they got cursed, into a monstrous anthropomorphic animal that is driven purely by instinct and desire, in particularly feeding and breeding. The curse is transferred to anybody who is party to killing the lycantroph. The lycantroph can remember what they do while changed. If it successfully breeds, there is a 50% chance that the child is a born lycantroph. Born lycantrophs don't have their first change until onset of puberty. Initially, they are unable to control the change nor their actions while changed. When not in control, they are driven by pure primal instinct, details depend on situational circumstances. The forced changes happen in the same moon phase as the first change but also can be triggered in situations of intense stress or excitement. It takes years to learn to gain even some semblance of control over the change or ones actions. Only on controlled chances can the events while changed be remembered. This type of lycantrophy is not infectious nor transmittable, but offspring has a high chance of being born lycantroph.

I allways had the feeling that most lycanthropes fit way better in lower-fantasy settings. I also read about an interesting setting once: Druids could only shift into one specific form (and forms between the humanoid and animal form) because they actually were lycanthropes. Cursed people who didn't find their inner peace in the nature together with those druid circles were usually ravaging beasts.

Agreed about the lower level thing. Once the party can Remove Curse, Lycanthropes lose a lot of their power to threaten the party. And I do like the idea of there being a connection between Druids and lycanthropy. Lots of story potential in having the first Druids be Lycanthropes who wanted to control their abilities without giving in to the curse.

One of my games i changed lycanthrophy to work as a curse but the animal you turn into is based on your personality as if the curse was bringing the animal side of humanity to a pure form. Also it was a form for me to control the party wishes to simply use this and i set a monthly roll dice that if failed they would fall more and more to the animal side until they become completly animal and loses his character to the curse, so it was an adventure to some old Silvanus temple in the middle of a dense jungle to lift the curse(and the mage was able to control it so he could change into a were-owl at wish)

Seeing your question about the first man-wolf hybrid, I find that 'Doctor Jekyll & Mr. Hyde' is usually noted as the first literary reference for the modern idea of the werewolf. Prier to this werewolves only had a wolf form. As for the earliest written tale of a werewolf, that comes from Ancient Rome. It's constantly been a curse from the beginning, though the source has varied

On page 207 of the PHB the very first thing it says is "This chapter describes "THE MOST COMMON" spells in the worlds of Dungeons & Dragons." There are thousands if not millions of spells, and if your DM allows or creates a spell, it is now a spell. The best way to do this is by using the spell creation method in the DMG or just simply taking an existing spell and changing its damage type. I explain all this to then answer your question at 2:25 "how is it possible to be cursed" In D&D 3.5 The Book of Vile Darkness there is a 9th level Beastial Domain/Cleric/Druid spell which in fact curses up to 4 humanoid creatures with a random lycanthrope form, cursing them. The only requirement is for it to be cast at night, and a bit of lycan skin or fur. In my games I am completely open to Bestow Curse doing a wide array of possibilities, such as turning one creature into a lycanthrope. Arguably a 6th level Bestow Curse should be sufficient, with a lycan tooth, skin, or fur. and the target would be bestowed that type of lycanthropy. Create Undead is 6th level and can also only be cast at night. I'd argue 8 ghouls is way more powerful than any single Lycan, plus the target to become a lycan wouldn't be under your control, in my games. In 3.5 only Bestial Domain Clerics and Druids can do it. I would say Wizards and Warlocks should be able to as well.

I played most of the White Wolf games back in the day (although we skipped 'Faire', concept just seemed too silly ^_^). I always got the idea that the setting was, more or less, based on the Universal Studios monsters: Vampire/Dracula, Werewolf/The Wolfman, etc. Although they weren't part of the 'main' books, we also had Mummy and "Prometheans", essentially Frankenstein's Monster. So, the setting borrowed the "Hybrid" form from 'The Wolfman', but just made it more 90s Badass by making it Hulk big with a huge wolf's face (and its funny that White Wolf later tried to sue "Underworld" for copying the same tropes it 'borrowed' from other materials ^_^

I had a group who was really into lycanthropes of all sorts; so much so that the battles became routine... pull out the silvered weapons and it became a short fight. That is until I saw a certain movie, thought it was an interesting premise and reworked it in a darker bent. I love comedies, and I have a darkish sense of humor, so drawing upon other comedic movies I came up with a "vorpal" were-rabbit. However, the were-rabit can not be affected by silver. It's weakness was gold-plated weapons (24 Karats :oP ). I think the pun did more damage to the players than they did to the were-rabbit with their silvered weapons.

The first place I see humanoid figures shifting into a wolf form in western culture is the early vampires of central Europe. The whole concept of that vampire, who attacks those closest to them first (family, immediate neighbours) and how you defeat them (garlic, burning the corpse) comes from myths that grew up around plague. They can also transform into any variety of spooky creatures (wolves, bats, spiders) and get at you that way, because you thought you had barred the way for an undead human figure, but oh no, this rat got in, and now you're infected. Which was not exactly wrong.

i feel like a good way to balance the curse, at least in combat, would be a system if beserk rolls (please note i have no idea how they work currently) basically, when in beast mode and something dies near you, 20ft radius or so, or when you take damage over a certain threshold (and pf course when you first turn) you go Beserk, basically just attacking whatever's closest, regardless of friend or foe. you could even have a thing where they go feral if they fail too many in a row, buggering off into the wilderness and not changing back for a week or so, or until the curse is lifted by another person

From the book the curse is described as a very RP heavy curse. Even those who embrace the curse need "time and experience" to actually master the curse and while the stock werebear is NG there is nothing to stop a player from becoming LG or CE through actions that would otherwise change a player alignment. Your example of any good aliened fighter just getting bit by a werebear however does not work out as you described because those who give in would still "Succomb to bloodlust, becoming evil, opportunistic creatures that prey on the week". Your example fighter would still have to spend time as evil mastering the curse. Lycanthropy has always been a judge of a DMs skill of RP with their players. Previous editions babied lazy DMs with giant stat blocks ultimately limiting these creatures(probably why you never really used them in the past) but 5th leaving the pros and cons up to RP interpretation gives them the freedom and flexibility they need to shine.

But I play a doom knight werewolf, so I'm dangerous regardless of my form. For those who are curious, doom knight is an old class from 3.5E, my DM brought it into his 5E campaign.

I really liked the question on what's the origin of this curse. Although Werewolves are a thing that has been going round for several decades now, in books, hollywood and everything, i really liked the story that the folks of blizzard gave to it. This made the werewolf curse a forbidden druidic shapeshifting form. in likeness to the ancient wolf god, druids would transform into massive wolves (worgen in the lore) but unable to control themselves the longer they stayed in this form. Biting others in this form would cause them to transform and unable to turn back to human/elven form. like i said, i really like the hook into druidic shapeshifting, but with serious safety hazards. check out the lore video from the warcraft universe: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nZdmopeE2bzLl40.html

I really like how Underworld did its werewolves and lycans. The werewolves are pretty much a straight up curse as they are always in a hyrbid form and are only partially in control. Then you have the lycans which is more of a blessing than a curse, at least once you learn to control your form.

Were beasts are better at pretending to be legitimate human beings than Vampires are. This is probably because they can choose the best time to carry out their plans in the proximity of the forest or other natural environment. It is only a matter of time before some human being recognizes the trail leading to a member of the pack, in which case a were beast makes no bones about it.

I definitely like the idea of going more traditional with it and making lycanthropy something you do NOT want unless you are evil/not in your right mind. Also it cant be done at will. it will be a full moon thing or at least have some condition (night, a certain other phase of the moon, maybe 1 month intervals from the time first bitten. etc) For a villain (almost definitely a minor one, nothing to base an entire campaign on. a local threat vs a country/continental/world/universal threat) i'd make it one of the first 3~ villains the party faces. maybe make it so the dude doesn't even know he's the villain. like lets say its the town mayor or something and theres a bunch of missing/dead people. because it happens once a month and always on a full moon, everyone is like PRETTY sure its a were wolf (any bodies showing claw/bite marks probably help) but assume its some dude out in the wild and not one of there own. OR they think its one of their own but suspect its some crazy loner dude who lives on the outskirts. then BAM, its the mayor. doesn't keep its mental stats and completely becomes an anthropomorphic bipedal wolf. a savage killing machine. or maybe go a little bigger and there is a "pack" of werewolves out there slowly transforming a local population to be their own kind and then spread outward. thats a potential way to make them at least SEEM like a bigger threat. even if their plan is unrealistic. Also, unless you actually plan a way for your characters to relatively quickly/easily (though in that case, why cant we cure these guys? maybe we can and the players are murder hobo's :p) find a cure or plan on making their lycanthropy an actual THING in the campaign, make it so the act of passing on the curse needs to be somewhat deliberate so not every claw and bite attack curses the party, or make it so the attack has to knock you to 0 or kill you. Also I'd probably buff them by taking inspiration from other media if necessary, which is something i know you guys are big advocates of since you've said on multiple occasions how underpowered you think the majority of the monster manual is.

Our first were beast... Heh. OK so a touch of back story. My character is a half-orc paladin of the ancients, outlander. Orphaned, raised by a dwarf in the forests, fought the good fight. Eventually, they tracked a bear that had been terrorizing a region called One Eye, my orc survived, his adoptive father did not. I skinned the bear, buried the dwarf in the pelt and buried the bear while taking its skull as a trophy. Fast forward to a quest into a demiplane of the feywild. Its me, our halfling rogue and dragonborn sorcerer. We enter a room with a humongous orc and a bear sidekick, we engage in battle and midfight, the orc goes were bear. And. Rages. What followed is the most harrowing battle we've ever had, at one point I came within one attack of dying (attack roll missed by one) As my guy dropped unconscious, the were bear took the bear skull from my pack. and put it on his head. Flesh regrew. Fast forward past a hasty health potion to wake me up, the bear sidekick is down and withered into the body of an old dwarf. Which is when the DM says "You've seen this before, fighting One Eye over the body of your father." Werebear is One Eye. Dwarf dad is a were bear too. Turns out the DMs rule is a dead weres soul goes to the feywild. Hell of a first werecreature and a hell of a DM. Oh, and the orc? My half orcs birth father. I'm still looking for answers on that front.
