Have a bunch of the Lyman sabot slugs loaded up in Remington RXP hulls. Using Blue Dot as it's all I have listed in the Lyman manual to put together a load with components on hand. Published velocity is 1501 fps & I loaded them up perhaps a hair shy of the published powder charge. June 2022 I sent a couple over my new chrono & both were over 1500. One was over 1800 but someone knowledgeable said that might have been the wad messing with the chrono, which can happen. Definitely feel the recoil haha. Shot out of a vintage Browning A5 smoothbore semi with a shortened barrel. I don't recall seeing anything about these slugs being made for rifled barrels. I thought their design being front heavy stabilized their flight without the need for rifling. Kind of why there's such an accuracy discrepancy between the Lee 1 oz drive key slug vs the 7/8 oz version. The 7/8 is inherently more accurate.

Great video, thank you for sharing. Never tried unique in a slug load. I’m a 7625 man. I think I will give unique a try, but it will be a couple of months before the range is open. Take care.

I have a bit of 7625 but I believe it has been discontinued. I may even have a few slugs loaded with it waiting for some future range trip. Thanks for dropping by to check out the video.

I never really stop shooting, I just go from shooting a lot to just a little. Have not shot a lot over the last year or so with the high price of components and the gas to get to the range. Hope to see you out at the range some time, take care!

One thing about this load that I like is that it is relatively mild shooting for a 12 gauge slug load.

Has a " unique sound " i have some loaded here with blue dot and did some with black powder, hope get chance to try them the BP rounds are with fiber cushion wads...and a fed shotcup on top of fiber wad to hold the slug... I intend trying as a deer load in old sxs damascus gun. The blue dot loads if used in my more modern guns...gd results in the past was usimg the red winchester. AA12R wads and the older AA hulls... I do recall also a load with herco but i ran out of the slugs... Another project was re using old rifled slugs from Scuzzy ammo...mostly imperial 7\8oz slugs...wanted to try with black powder and fiber cushions for the old guns.
@314299

I recall using some blue dot loads with the same slug and gun the same day and the velocity swings were large, something like 138 fps between the fast ans slow shots. BP ought to be consistent by comparison.

Not terrible for that distance considering it’s designed for a rifled barrel and was shot in a smoothbore. I wonder how temperature sensitive Unique is? You could definitely make a part 2 of this load in warmer weather.
@314299
@314299 Жыл бұрын
I don't think Unique has a reputation as being particularly temperature sensitive. Eight degrees C is not particularly cold (46 F), I think the real difference in sub zero would be the performance of the wads.

@@314299 The gun weighs a little over 9 pounds so that does soak up a lot of the kick. I have a 32" barrel that was meant for geese and the 22" smooth bore slug barrel. I think my 3.5" chambered 870 kicks harder. Possibly due to its lighter weight or the 14,000 psi that is allowed in the 12ga 3.5" while the 10ga 3.5" is only allowed 11,000psi.

Sounded to me like a ringing noise, but oit could have been a whistling from the wads or the slugs, The velocities were right around the speed of sound perhaps the 1109 fps one was the normal sounding one?

1100 f/s on a chunk of lead like that will do some damage. Now if only I could find a decent slug mold like that for the 20ga that didn't cost me an arm and a leg. I have the H&R model 158 in 44 mag, an H&R 258 30-30/20ga combo and a newer NEF in 20ga.
@314299
@314299 Жыл бұрын
The current asking price for a Lyman Sabot slug mold is indeed a bit on the steep side. Sounds like you have a pretty good selection of H&R & NEF guns, quite a versatile and useful collection of calibers/gauge.

Not bad for the distance. If it was a rifled barrel shotgun, would it require a slower burning powder?
@314299
@314299 Жыл бұрын
I don't think a rifled barrel requires a slower powder. These loads are from the Lyman book and I suspect they would have been developed in a rifled barrel. The Unique is probably the fastest powder listed by Lyman for the sabot slug with Blue Dot being the slowest. I found the Blue Dot was rather inconsistent in velocity.
@STMwoodturning
@STMwoodturning Жыл бұрын
How was the recoil? My brother had the same gun except for his had a regular barrel, modified choke I think. It kicked pretty hard if you weren’t ready for it. I imagine you’re fairly immune to recoil with all the shooting you do.
@314299
@314299 Жыл бұрын
By 12 gauge slug standards these were not a hard kicking load as the velocity was not all that fast. Having said that I don't think I would like to fire fifty of these off the bench in a row! With this being a somewhat light shotgun one has to hand on tight to it and ride out the recoil cycle. The standard recoil pad is pretty good at helping as well. As for being immune to the effects of recoil I cannot say I am, one can get a bit prone to flinching with time.

@314299

I doubt 12 grains of unique will be satisfactory as that's a very light charge, the powder may have problems burning properly with such a light charge.

Are you planning on reusing those empties, possibly for shot in the the future? Wondering why you crimped these?
@314299
@314299 Жыл бұрын
These were fold crimped as that is what the load data specifies (Lyman 5th edition Shotshell Reloading Handbook, page 385). I have a bin of Winchester AA hulls and generally pick out the best ones for use with slugs, the tired ones can be used for target shot loads.

@@314299 Hmm, well i guess you are a bit more submissive than I. Id be testing everything trying to figure out why they wanted it there. My assumption is if you trimmed it off then you're left with empties that are a different size than the rest. I cant leave things alone, my eyes see something out of the ordinary n i wanna know why. They shot pretty darn good, very neat single you got there!
@314299
@314299 Жыл бұрын
@@jacobwilbert1018 Roll crimps are fine if you have hulls that tolerate them, but previously fold crimped hulls dont roll crimp well in my experience. Also roll crimps are slower and require an extra step to achieve. The only real downside with fold crimped slug loads is that they are not easy to identify and could be mistaken for shot loads. You certainly dont want to launch one of these up in the air thinking that are #8 shot!
