www.massagebyheather.com - Learn Abdominal Lymph Drainage Massage to affect the trunk and legs. This video (the first of two) shows the specific method of breathing that is a tremendous tool for reducing edema and fluid retention in the abdomen and trunk and for the legs. Contraindications include pregnancy (Lymphatic breathing is excellent, but don't do part 2 of this video series). Other contraindications for Lymphatic Drainage Massage work in general are as follows:
1. Fever, acute infection, early onset inflammatory disease. You need to wait until the acute phase is over and the fever is broken.
2. Circulatory system problems, especially thrombosis. If there is any risk of embolism of phlebitis, do not use LDM and see your physician immediately
3. Cardiac issues such as heart disease, acute angina pectoris or coronary thrombosis (heart attack). Using LDM increases the fluid load on the heart, and compromised cardiac systems should not be subjected to LDM.
4. Active bleeding, internal or external.
5. Active malignant cancers, undiagnosed lumps, or tumors whose origins have not been determined by your physician.
6. High risk pregnancy or late term pregnancy with complications

I started doing Heather's massages almost 2 years ago when I had a severe fluid retention problem. It hurt a lot the first time I did all the videos in one session. It was the first thing I did in my journey to get rid of the fluid retention that was all throughout my body and causing severe knee pain. I did the massage 2-3 times a week in the beginning then maybe once a month. Here I am a few years later, 56 lbs lighter, knees in great shape, practicing yoga twice a week for 10 months now and completely changed the way I eat - organic, unprocessed foods, low carb, whole fats and I feel terrific. Heather, thank you for these videos, I literally think they were the beginning of a return to health for me. I truly believe my lymph system was toxic and your videos brought me back to a full and happy, healthy lifestyle. I tell everyone I come in contact with who has a fluid retention problem or a weight problem about your videos.

Oh and yes, I informed my family doctor right after I started this and she said, "go for it." When she got me on the scale last Fall she was amazed at the difference in my weight, knees and my uplifting spirit.

Hi Ellie. You give me a tremendous amount of hope. I am having a horrible time with lymphoedema. I am a single parent and work full time. It's getting harder and harder to function. It's competely awful. It's nice to be able to get information from someone that actually has first hand experience with this and secondly has been able to recover. Thank you for the inspiration!

As an Occupational Therapist who works with lymphedema patients, I'm enjoying your videos on manual lymph drainage and self massage. Your presentation is excellent and thorough, and I've gained a few new ideas from your various presentations. I'm wondering if you have any new ideas for MLD into the back, for breast cancer patients who have had bilateral node excision, followed by radiation. With the normal pathways into the lymphatic ducts blocked, it is a challenge to move lymph into areas that can drain effectively. The standard method is around to the back, which is nearly impossible to perform on oneself effectively. If you have any suggestions for this, it would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi there, I would not do any of these techniques until you have cleared it with both your PCP (or whoever is treating you for the DVT) and your surgeon. I highly recommend finding a certified lymphedema therapist in your area who is in a doctor's office or a PT/OT who can do an evaluation and help design a treatment for you specifically. Eventually these techniques may be helpful, but DVTs are serious and life-threatening so do them under a physician's care once cleared by the surgeon and dr.

Hi Heather, I am a mother and a full-time caregiver of an autistic child/adult. I am also a nurse for 30 years experience. I’ll be a pitta me of do as I say not as I do. I was wondering if you could come out with some kind of tutorial that a mom who is pressed for time it has really no time to devote to themselves for when lymphatic massage to help me reduce stress and improve my immune systems. Being a full-time caregiver to a severely autistic young adults, is extremely stressful it causes tension throughout the body. I can’t sleep at night and I noticed that I have a Lotta pain under my arms and long my chest wall every single night along with tension in my neck and shoulders as well as jaw and face. I know that this pain is a direct result of the tension all day long but I’m positive that your lymphatic drainage massage techniques incorporated with some soothing self breathing and self massage techniques will only improve my overall health and well-being. I think that one thing that would be a positive note to add to all of your videos is that when you do you live back massage you really should increase your fluid intake to help flush out toxins from your venous system. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for posting these videos because without these videos people like me who are trapped in their home with a severely disabled individual would have no way to get out and no knowledge of how to perform lymphatic massage.

In the second movement, where you put your hands behind your neck and pull down, does “down” mean straight down (in the direction of the tailbone) or down and angled toward the hollow of the collarbone? I’m nearly three weeks out from lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy. I think this will help the discomfort I’m having in my armpit.

Will this work for spinal synovial cyst? Already exploded once and is now big enough to do this again I fear. Very crippling when that happens, for several weeks and completly disabling forxa few weeks. Also have neck cysts and falling platelets but they don't want to drain the biggest cyst and am afraid that each time this happens will end up with 30 or more cysts all over the body.

I am not really sure what you think acupuncture is doing. Needles can be tiny (4mm is my favorite) It doesn't go deep. It fixes chi flow imbalances. You can also do it all on the person's hands, or ears - A piece of rice stuck to an ear point works fine (though I have not studied very much regarding ear & hand sub acupuncture subsystems yet.); or use heat on an acu point (moxabustion) . A GOOD acupuncturist can find the points even if they have moved for some reason (like pierced ears)

I have recently been diagnosed with lymphedema. It started out just in my legs and now it seems that all the water has accumulated in my stomach. Now my stomach is twice as big as it was and my fat seems to drooping downward and the skin on my stomach hurts so much. I have been doing the massages but the swelling in my stomach is not going down. Is there any other way to get the draining to start actually draining? I am getting desperate. My mom is my PCA and has been helping me with the massages but it has been almost a month and the swelling is not going down so she is wanting to admit me to the hospital. I have several medical problems and have been in and out of hospitals and I really hate them and I don't want to go back. Any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

Acupuncture does not act on the nerves or on any deep part of body tissue. It does not work that way. It is CHI up at the surface. Whoever you have been seeing for it ought to be able to explain that (and how it works) unless they are one of the many MDs out there who took a weekend course in acupuncture & know noting about CHI & haven't a clue how it works. Really high fat levels can slightly change meridian and point positions (but you can still find them easily). I do.

Generally, removing fat helps lower the swelling in secondary lymphedema. Fat you don't have, can't swell up with excess lymph. My legs started very muscular (hence the sores)...but wasting changed that. I suppose that morbid obesity would be a challenge, but this method is moving lymph..just NOT in deep tissue. It doesn't need to do that anyway, because the "near to the surface" lymph movement clears the nodes so the rest of the lymph CAN move when you walk - like unblocking a pipe.

Lymph nodes are neck thighs I was RRT. If you guys want lymph you start on neck behind ears massaging. Light but I do drainage then stomach you don't turn clock wise you go down and I triangle but honestly buy cheap cupping n do triangle on stomach I do entire abdominal grab cupping or wood roller and roll it out then thighs the neck you go upward. Legs inner thighs I cup. Ebay sells vacuum therapy for cheap you use silver for lymph and get a blanket heated after it does drain

If she has cardiac edema, you should NOT perform these techniques on her. In the case of cardiac edema, the heart is already overloaded trying to work with the fluid in the circulatory system. Since this technique increases lymphatic circulation and thus the load on the overall circulatory system, it would be dangerous. Check with your MIL's PCP or cardiologist to see if there is something you can do to safely reduce the volume in the legs/ankles and feet.

But I got sick from chemical exposure. Muscle wasting took it all. I Lost >70 lbs of muscle over time - mostly in '04 (bad wasting & pain). I got fat, but I lost it. Legs have varicose veins & bad valves from muscle size change. Endocrine system is broken I get lymphatic sores too (most dime sized) every time I go to town.

+Booker J. Witherspoon - no, this is manual lymph drainage. the lymph system does not have a heart to pump fluid back to wear it belongs. it relies on rhythmic muscle contractions to move fluid in one direction through a series of small one-way valves. breathing is the BEST way to get that movement followed by muscle movement. there is valid science behind these techniques. this is essential self care for those of us who have lymphedema.
