I was watching this and thought "Wow David Lynch's approach to speaking to children is like the total opposite of Mr Rogers' way of speaking to them" but then I kinda realized he's actually handling the situation in quite a beautiful way that is just a testament to Lynch's character. Because he's not really dumbing anything down too much. Hes asking the children to roll and yell because it would be beautiful, and you can tell he means that he wants them to do exactly that because it would be beautiful. There's no lying or trying to manipulate them to do anything.. Hes kind of just treating them like tiny adults. And you can argue the effectivness of his methods, but you cant deny its a clear testament to Lynchs incredible character
@lizziepore
@lizziepore 4 жыл бұрын
Right? And you could still tell he's not taking it too far with his tone. He's directing them straightforward like adults but his manner is still aware that he's talking to children.

Crawl and cry like a baby. Alden, do that thing. That'd be so beautiful- that's great, like that. Can you make noise? Keep making noise. Make some crying noises, some sad, loud crying noises. Don't be happy. Don't be happy. Roll around and be- be, you know, upset. Roll around and be upset. There you go, that's beautiful. Roll back the other way. Roll back the other way. Roll back the other way. Same thing. Roll back. Roll back. No, no, no, no, that's too happy. Roll again. Get over there and roll- roll really, uh, in pain. Really in pain. That's beautiful. As a director that has worked with children (under the age of 5) on a low budget independent film & I must say, working with children is such a difficult thing to do... its so hit-or-miss with children. You either get an amazing shot you didn't expect to get or you get hours of frustration that you hope can be worked with while editing... most of the time, both.

@@user-tv1kw4wl7t you act like directing kids would be easy. It’s hard enough getting kids to listen in general but getting them to act would be hell

@@user-tv1kw4wl7t if i has to direct kids it’s get way worse than him. he’s probably been sitting there for at least half an hour trying to get those kids to do something extremely simple. i’m not blaming the kids at all but working with child actors is very hard, especially as young as those kids.
