I remember seeing a feral cat in Cumbria 17 years ago, it was a bit bigger than a fox with weird looking fur. I used to joke that it was a mutant from the nuclear plant, but I was told all the local stories/rumours i.e. exotic pets released into the countryside.

Here’s a story my father passed on to me a few years ago. A few years before, say the early 2000s in the summer time there was a big search for a missing child not far from my parents in South Gloucestershire, a mile or so north of Bristol. A policeman walking a country lane spotted a load of corvids circling something in the middle of some mowing grass, he stood on the gate to get a better look, then rushed over praying it was not the lost child he could see, it wasn’t, he found instead a Lynx / Bobcat lying close to death, it was riddled with mange and in a pathetic state, I don’t know the end of the story other than the cat was removed from the field, so I can’t say if it was destroyed or saved.

Sounds like a Bunyip. Very secretive animal. You were lucky to see one. Usually found near water or marsh land............... Could it have been a old feral dog?

Around 1993 my primary school field backed on to old train lines we used to go through a large hole in the railings me and atleast 3 friends saw a lynx/bobcat it didnt run when it saw us it calmly walked off in to thick bushes, there where alot of ferral cats living on the tracks behind are school maybe this attracted it im not sure, i remember it had a thick short tail and a spikey white mane and was about 1.5 to 2 times bigger than a large domestic, this was in preston lancashire and about a good mile from and farm like fields, the area is quite built up although the old tracks where less busy and thickly overgrown

Greetings From America. Bobcat and Lynx have "no tail" just a stubby. Both have a multi colored coat with black splotches and are at best perfectly camoflogded... So they are easy recognized when they are seen..... 🤔🤔 But there are Many other Cats...So who knows???? Bobcats run about the same size as a fox here, but Lynx are twice or more that size....pretty fair size cat! Both have the distinct feature of longer hind legs than the front. I have the pleasure of seeing a bobcat every now and again here, but Lynx are non-existent to all but the most remote of locations. Time to invest in a few trail cams......if your courosity is peaked enough...😉. Might even help in patterning some of those Deer. 😃 The more time you spend in the country side, the more you see....and sometimes you get more questions than answers! Keep a eye pealed, for you just never know! Best Wishes Sam.. 😃

Been shooting for 29 years and often game keeping in the last 7 years. What you described you seen sounds to me like the Lynx which are actually in no shortage in the forests we operate in and my best encounter with the lynx happened last year and was only about 20 or so meters away where we both locked eyes on each other for about 6 to 7 seconds or so before it turned and moved off quite quickly. I just decided to up up big cats again because just last Saturday i had another encounter this time with a black cat at about the size of a German Pointer. I left out the locations of these sightings for obvious reasons.

You could be right about seeing a Lynx, as a very brief surface googling shows that there were plans at some point to reintroduce them to the UK. Apparently they were once native here. :) I hope they're not a nuisance animal, as they are very beautiful!

I had a sighting when I was younger about 25 years ago and it's actually officially recorded because it was both me and my freind that had the encounter and it was around 30 yards away, this is what happened... We were walking through a small village in Dorset, in the middle of the daytime and a huge black cat with a massive tail came walking out of the hedgeline into the road. It stopped and looked straight at us, but it got weirder, then a much larger black cat came out of the same hedgerow behind it and following a long were three little cubs. I swear as God as my witness this is true. They crossed the road into the garden on the other side. People told us they were dogs, you don't confuse cats for dogs at 30 yards and dogs don't have short faces ,metre long tails and thick muscular shoulders, they also don't walk with that prudent, sleek walk that cats have. I will never forget it. Ever. We ran to our friends house as quick as we could. Big cats have been officially listed as British wildlife according to a newspaper report I read some years back. They're here, and they're breeding. People in Africa where leopards are common, hardly ever see them, and that's with large numbers. That's why sighting are so rare in the UK.

Someone shared this video to FB, but I didn't realize how old it was. I animal watch with NV and thermal and have seen a few things I couldn't readily identify, but nothing that left me thinking it was a big cat. Although I did myself have a good sighting of a Black Panther near the A55 Expressway in Abergele back around 2006-2008, I drove passed a field that is parallel with Gwrych Castle, and it was a 1/4 way up this field, near the hedgerow about 100m away and I got a really good look at it, when I got home I reported it to Colwyn Bay Police station and initially told the desk Sergeant that he would think I'm crazy but upon telling him of my sighting he said 2 other credible witnesses has already reported seeing the same "big cat" and they were taking the sighting seriously. Incidentally Black Panthers have been seen in the woods there and also further south at a nearby holiday park, Bones also found in a nearby cave that showed tooth pits and indentations normally seen from when a Leopard feeds on an animal's bones.

I work on a golf course that's surrounded by farms and a few years back I seen something that looked like a big cat. I was on my way to work I seen its eyes light up in the middle of the field and next thing it was running across the road Infront of the car. I've seen many foxes and this didn't run like fox and how far it ran in that short time it was quick. Spoke to one of the old farmers about it and he said they heard about cats often in the farming community.

Evening Sam, I live very close to stansted airport in a small village 10 mile or so away. Know as the ‘big black cat’ a very large black panther like animal has been spotted in my village on numerous occasions, my grandad has seen the animal multiple times as he was a train driver for British rail he has seen it either end of tunnels by the airport and has caught it trying to get into his peacock enclosure. Just something I’d share around this topic. Hope all is well 👍🏼

There probably are a few. At least 3 have been shot( sadly) in Thetford forest, and there have been a lot of sightings of lynx. The lynx is shy, elusive, it doesn't like to leave forests and it is not a loud animal. It is also not that large, with it only able to take down roe deer at most. They could easily hide in the forests of Uk like Thetford or New Forest, where there's abundant woodland, lots of deer and less human activity, with parts people don't go into. I've been to some parts of thetford forest that are so in the woods I can't even find it on a map, places that me and my dad saw no one else for hours. They probably are few and wary, but a friend found lynx tracks recently this year so they still live in thetford forest. I have seen one big cat in the Uk wild, though it was not a lynx. I was 10 years old going to a PGL place for a trip with my primary school on a bus, and I was looking out the window to see any animals since I always love animals. I saw a whole herd of fallow deer resting under a tree in a field, which was easily visible from the road. Then I see something running across a field ahead, which as the bus passes comes into view. It was a big farm crop field, with woodland on either side. I could see whatever it was had a long thin tail, a long sleek build, it looked at least 4 feet minimum, I could tell because the deer were close enough to the road to see their size and this looked as long at least, it had four long limbs and the head was not a dogs, with their ears and snout, plus there was no person around or a collar or leash in sight, it looked cat like with the face as it was running reminding me of those documentaries of big cats running down prey, like a cougar or leopard. I've seen foxes a lot, this was not a fox, it was not a badger, polecats are much smaller then this and they don't have such long thin tails, only cats have tails like cylinders. But the bus pulled away and it was gone. I've seen polecats since then, and pine martens, and neither match what I saw, this thing was at least two feet tall for a start, much bigger and unlike a fox it was too long looking with a much less fluffy tail and a head that looked too feline to be a foxes, no triangular face.

My buddy has seen something similar while looking for Roe. He has seen it on 2 occasions. Matching same description, a little bigger than a fox but same features as described in the video and comments. Hes wondered what it could be natively and doesn't know. You hear stories in local press every now and again regarding sightings too. It would be awesome if someone got photos or footage. While I've never seen anything myself I have seen some suspect looking footprints while I've been looking around the river on the perm. I'm in Lancashire. It's all a bit of a mystery!

It was a large cat like a Panther, i couldn't believe what i was seeing, my mind was telling me it wasn't possible, but i did see a very large black cat with a long thick tail, a domestic cat would have been too small to see from that distance.

could be a scab fox? dont know if thats what they are called in english. (storytime) Anyhow this reminds me of something that happened last april when i was home alone studying for my hunters exam on my porch, when i in the corner of my eye see something about 200 meters away on the road over a hill next to the field, i saw it just as it walked over the crest and behind the hill, it looked like an overgrown fox with brown/red ish coloured fur, but it had way longer limbs and walked slouched over like an ape (kinda sideways), it kinda looked like a skinny man with fur, dont remember if i saw a tail. scariest experience ive had in my life since it looked straight at me before it walked over the hill and looked so weird!. It scared me so much i even went inside and locked the doors. Both my older brothers and father have seen animals they cant explain when i was younger, one time when my brother and father were out driving(?) horses in a cart something big jumped or flew over them as they were driving over that very hill, my dad described it as a big bird or bat and my brother thought it was some other animal like moose or wolf, but what animal could JUMP over a horse and cart and an entire road?

Those are just wild cats lad, people referring to them as feral cats as well and they look intimidating and can be aggresive. Seeing one can scare the shit out of you if you not prepared as they are huge and that fur makes them look even more robust 🧔👍
