I always made the connection that the first half sounded like an engine trying to start up, especially with the two buildups in the song, (the drums sound like an engine stumbling on a cold start), then the solo kicks off and it’s stuck at wide open throttle!

Sorry you are all wrong. That guitar solo was played by one man, Allen Collins. Don't believe me then there is a video on KZfaq with Allen's isolated solo. Believe it or not but he came up with that in high school & most of the lyrics came from his high school sweetheart. The first album there were only two guitarists playing, Ed King played bass on their first album. It was Second Helping where the genius of Ed King was truly discovered

Well I'll give you at least the artist were not controlled pushing govt ideas and narratives. It obviously led to much better music instead of this manufactured crap of today. Actually some ppl disagreed and times God forbid. Yet, the powers at be learned their lessons with the amount of influence these ppl had, decided not to make that mistake again. Albums should just released by CNN now lol. Things were getting worse then, ppl were not aware of the scale of problems yet. Took another 35 to 40 yrs of lies and manipulation.

The problem with the Oakland live performance of Freebird is they focus more on the crowd than the band during the solo. The Knebworth Festival where they opened for the Stones is a better version. Just my opinion, of course.

The "Free Bird" theme is like the "Ramblin' Man" theme. A guy who just has to go. "Is there more than one guitar?" Yes. There are 3. Oakland and Knebworth are both great. Oakland might edge out on sound, but Knebworth is cool, because the guys blew the Stones away - and performed on the "forbidden tongue" to close the show.

The BEST is Live August 21, 1976 at Knebworth! The guitar solo is longer and better. Do NOT watch Oakland in ‘77. People will tell you Oakland and they are so wrong. Sound quality is bad and there is a part where they edit. You want 1976 where they opened for The Rolling Stones. Trust me.

You picked an awesome first song in your introduction to Lynyrd Skynyrd. Freebird isn't about him going to war though it's about what it means to be free, in that a bird can fly wherever he wants to go. It's also about everyone wants to be free...that's what this country's all about. Skynyrd are still legendary. The guitarist you hear is Alan Collins. Amazing guitarist. He was one of the founding members of the band. Watching your reaction is so typical of what the song makes me feel like. You just get lost in it. You feel instinctively like you're floating and spinning. It's so...hard to describe.
