Personnel:

Artimus Pyle - drums
Gary Rossington - guitar
Ronnie Van Zant - lead vocals
Leon Wilkeson - bass, background vocals
Summary:
By the time Lynyrd Skynyrd played this sold-out show at San Francisco's Winterland ballroom, they had become the unmistakable kings of Southern Rock. Spearheaded by charismatic frontman, Ronnie Van Zant, the group had taken southern boogie from the swamps and brought it to the masses.
There is an enormous amount of energy and power in the multiple guitar mix of the band, and that is clearly apparent when they launch into solos on these songs. The group had built a solid following via AOR radio by 1975, and songs like "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird" had given the band enormous crossover appeal. The group was coming off two hugely successful albums, its debut (pronounced leh-nerd skin-nerd) and 1974's Second Helping, and they had recently replaced original drummer Bob Burns with Artimus Pyle.
This show was recorded during the band's tour promoting their 1975 album, Nuthin' Fancy, and it features Lynyrd Skynyrd at the top of their game. It was also one of the last shows featuring their original three-guitar lineup, as Ed King left the band midway through the tour. Skynyrd confidently played its brand of riff-driving Southern fried rock boogie to near capacity crowds on this entire '75 tour.
Poignant songs like "The Needle And The Spoon" are balanced against established Skynyrd rockers such as "Saturday Night Special" and "Gimmie Three Steps." Songs like "Whiskey Rock-A-Roller", J.J. Cale's "Call Me The Breeze", and "Sweet Home Alabama" are played here in their early forms-many of these classics would re-emerge as part of the must-do repertoire of so many country artists.
The band ends the show with a predictable but crowd-pleasing, version of its radio anthem, "Free Bird." Sadly, the band would change drastically when some of its members, including lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zant, would die in a plane crash two years after this show was recorded.

no doubt it's Allen's tune, and his lead is truly amazing, but damn Ed's fills make this tune so much more. and when they combine at the end of Allen's solo, just doesn't get any better.

@@jeffreyholmes7216 Exactly. Allen Collins is known for being in Skynyrd, but doesn't get enough props as one of the best American rock guitarists. He pulled off all those 'dual' lead on Free Bird (on the LP) -- by himself (live it was done a bit differently). He was the 'dual' lead on the record. Incredible.

When I was in high school, I heard this song and thought, Wow, I can really relate to this. After that dreadful crash, I never thought the world of music will never hear this band again or the amazing song writing skills of Skynard again. Slowly over the years, I realized I was right. There can never be another band that can do what Ronnie and the boys did. It's sad how right I was.

I've known of and heard Skynyrd many times over the past 30 years but never really got into them. Yesterday I watched the full concert of them in Winterland 1975. So many unbelievable guitar riffs, great vocals and the stage presence of Ronnie van Zandt. Drumming is tight. So today I'm still cranking this original Skynyrd lineup. They were an awesome band.

Listen to eds fills and twin leads with Allen complimenting this song. Never was played the same after he left. Same with whiskey rock a roller. Ed was a riff master. This songs words are largely responsible for me staying away from the heavy shit as a teen in the 80s. I've made plenty of mistakes with alcohol, and had every chance to partake of the heavy crap, but luckily stayed away from the bad shit cause of Ronnie's words.

This is one of the greatest songs ever written . This is a very historically important performance as it is one of very last shows featuring ED King Who wrote the guitar parts for this ! Listen to the incredible fills and transitions by guitar. This never would have been possible by Gary or Allen or even Steve. Ed was a major major reason LS was as huge as they are !!!!!! Please counter if you disagree . Every member of real LS was maybe a bit stoned this night & tempo a bit chugged ,but still brilliant

Interesting to watch the difference with this song between 75 and 76 versions. Ed adding a lot to the song here but played slower than in 76 when Allen and Gary had to kick it up a notch after Ed leaving. Also, no reverb used by Allen during outro in 75 but uses it heavy in 76.

You are impressed by these guys, who wouldn't be really? But their live versions of their songs have not changed from the studio and if you compare this song from one year to the next there is not any "evolution" because they did not improvise live and it was likely due to the stories I have heard of Ronnie going off on anyone who missed a note or a break after they had all gone back to the hotels to party. I like consistency with live performances, but I also have a huge amount of respect for a band who is brave enough to experiment and improvise every night and take a 7 minute studio song and evolve it into a whole side of a live album in 3 years time. Lynyrd Skynyrd had definite chemistry and IMO is the best at what they did but Led Zeppelin had alchemy and the 2 are not alike enough to make a comparison also In My Opinion. . .

Thirty days, lord and thirty nights I'm comin' home on an airplane flight Mama waitin' at the ticket line Tell me son why do you stand there cryin' It was the needle and the spoon And a trip to the moon Took me away, took me away I've been feelin' so sick inside Got to get better, lord before I die Seven doctors couldn't help my head, they said You better quit son before your dead With the needle, with the spoon And a trip to the moon Gonna take me away, lord gonna take me away It was the needle and the spoon I've seen a lot of people who thought they were cool But then again, lord I've seen a lot of fools Well, I hope you people, lord can hear what I say You'll have your chance to hit it some day Don't mess with the needle or a spoon And a trip to the moon Well it'll take me away, lord they're going to bury you boy Don't mess with the needle, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know

you hear about how much alcohol they drank before hitting the stage but yet they always sound fantastic. shows how incredibly talented these cats were. most people can barely walk down a flight of stairs after only two beers.

Eeegads ! Can you even imagine what RVZ would say to someone who dared suggest a thing like Auto Tune ? The man's voice was tailored for his music, and any other "tweaks" would be a sacrilege! And thank heavens that fake junk wasn't around in the 1970's......those Honkettes didn't really need a mix at all !!!
