Max 9 sights are amazing. The red dot makes it a 50yd capable option. It conceals just as easily IWB or shoulder carried. I'm making a cargo pocket holster for it that will carry a spare mag below the grip making a square package that conceals the outline of the gun.

The ability to mount an optic is a must-have for me. The way Ruger does it, with built-in suppressor-height sights, along with the lower price, makes this a fairly easy choice for me.

I own both guns, both with the CT 1550 red dot. Out of the box, the OR M&P is the better gun. I upgraded the trigger on the Ruger to the Galloway short stroke trigger, which wasn't too difficult, and it makes the guns much more comparable. Definitely worth the upgrade. I just got the Shield Plus. I think I like the trigger and the grip better than any weapon I ever owned. I’ve had 1911’s, first generation Springfield XD’s, Ruger SR9C’s, and currently an M9 clone from Girsan, which is not for carrying. I almost got a Glock 43, but for about $50 more, I got a weapon equally thin, and of equal quality with twice the capacity. As far as the Ruger Max 9, I don’t care to have to use a tool to field strip it, and it wasn’t any cheaper where I live.

I've learned. Tilt is a bad thing in concealing. A 4" barrel sucks on me IWB. I have to wedge it. The 3.1" got rid of that real quick. From one Plus to the shorter Plus. The difference was huge. Albeit, the same grips and length. The barrel's slight length on the performance center was a killer under the belt for me.

I prefer to get my optic added by professionals who mill deeper into gun and no chance of loosening from vibration. They mill so deep co-witnessing is easy. Gun companies go as cheap as possible sometimes using plastic seating plates and cheap Allen screws that strip easy. Never trust a gun company that is cutting cost to meet price point with anything as important as an optic cut. Some are dismissive enough to even put back iron sight on optic cover so you lose it when using optic. I have no affiliation or even know the people at Primary Machine but I’ve had 7 pistols milled by them with no complaints. They even got my guns back to me in just 7 to 14 working days when I used them.

Here would be a more honest review: What is the purpose of these firearms? Concealed carry and self defense. What would be the top 5 most important details? 1. Reliability 2. Conceal ability 3. Carry ability 4. Max rounds 5. Accuracy What did we know about these 5 points? 1. Tie: both are reliable. 2. Ruger is smaller in every way (see specs) 3. Ruger is lighter. 4. They tie in the flush mag. 5. Ruger was more accurate. The trigger is nicer on the S&W when you’re target shooting which is irrelevant for self defense (although it obviously didn’t help out the accuracy). The S&W felt better in your hand which is irrelevant for self defense. That’s why your wife made the more intelligent and logical conclusion.

Excellent points. I've rented both separately to shoot then together side by side. Yes, pulling the triggers unloaded the Plus is better. The Plus feels a little better in my hand, but when I shot them live, single shots or repeated my groups were identical from 15' just on different spots of the target. The sight on the Ruger is better, so why pay more as an aftermarket, when it comes out of the box like that. You hear the take down pin complaint a lot, but I think it is a weak argument. Anytime I clean a firearm, it is done w a tool box sitting there, empty mags and other items used to clean in little tiny places. So you can use just about anything to push the pin out. Losing the pin? It isn't a spring, are you cleaning your gun on the ledge of a 50 story building where wind might blow it off? I say both firearms are good options and personal preference will rule the day. Competition is king, glad there are a lot of options.

I try to be honest with my personal review of guns, and I have to be honest with this one. My first time shooting the Max 9 wasn't impressive, now I don't proclaim to be some awesome shooter but I'm ok because I practice pretty regularly. I haven't been to the range in about a month and a half because of a back injury; however, I wouldn't think my shooting would have been as bad with the Max 9, at 7 yards all I can say is I'm hitting center mass, but to say I had a shot group would be misleading. Pretty much all over the place, except where I aimed. I seem to be pulling low and left a whole lot. The trigger is a bit mushy, probably the worst of all my micro's. I expected this gun to be snappy being as light as it is, but that really wasn't an issue for me. But for those looking for a budget gun you might want to think about renting this one first before you buy it. I will definitely need to practice with this one before I use it for edc. My S & W Shield and even my Taurus G3c are way better shooters for shot groups. I like the size an weight of the gun as well as the sights, but for some reason I'm really shooting low and left of my aiming point, and the shot group is terrible. You'll need to have a good technic to be efficient with Max 9.

@RedRight Hand I have the original CCP. It has a few things going for it, but a lot of things people didn't like. It has amazing ergonomics and it is very easy to rack due to the gas system. I don't have a problem with the takedown, but, a lot of people hated it and it is something you need to get used to. It isn't actually made by Walther, it's made by Umarex. Quality isn't the greatest and mine has suffered with broken pins and trigger springs. It is decently reliable when not broken and easy to be accurate with so I'll give it that, but it gets VERY hot and dirty while shooting from the gas recoil system. I like to compare it to the S&W shield EZ in that it's a good gun for someone with less hand strength. But with the EZ out there now I would say it is a better option.

To me it just depends on what you are looking for. It's difficult to pass up the Ruger Max-9 at $450 around my area (Jacksonville, FL). The high vis sights are great/comes stock, comes optics ready, is slightly smaller if you really care about having the smallest size for conceal carry, carries the same round as the Shield Plus with the flush fit mag in a slightly smaller package, and is still cheaper than the Shield Plus. The LC9S/LC9 Pro is only $20-30 cheaper than the Max-9 around me so I'd spend a little more to get a much higher capacity and better grip texture. Downside to me is the trigger with the longer uptake/reset, but it's great for conceal carry. Take down isn't as traditional like most polymer striker fired pistols, but that also doesn't really matter much since you'll most likely only disassemble to clean from your home. Shield Plus is also great. I have the original Shield so it's nice that the Shield Plus will most likely fit my almost decade old holsters. I got a chance to shoot a Shield Plus this past weekend and love the trigger. Break is nice and reset is great. I'm hoping S&W brings over this trigger to the M&P 3.0 lineup whenever that comes out. The sjateboard grip texture on the Shield Plus remains great. It is a little rough, but I'm sure it will smooth out over time. The grip is also longer than all the other microcompacts on the market (aside from the Glock 43X if you consider that a microcompact) so it's easier to get a full, comfortable grip on it even if other guns have more capacity in the same size. I don't usually shoot smaller guns at the range that much, but I can see myself shooting the Shield Plus often. Downside to me are the features the Shield Plus provides doesn't provide the same value to me as the Max-9, Hellcat, and P365. The Shield Plus is a new offering and prices around me are inflated. They're generally around $550 for a pistol that isn't optics ready, have extra features like the ability to change grip sizes like the P365, and comes with standard sights. I love shooting the Shield Plus and would out an optic on it, but at thus point I would have to spend and extra $350+ to get the Performance Center version even if I don't care for the longer slide with cuts on them. I would spend an extra $100 on the high vis sights version if the Shield. It just sucks because I remember when S&W kept having rebate promotions so my original Shield was $270ish. I hope gun prices goes down in the future. By the time that happens, maybe S&W would have an optics ready Shield Plus for me to buy without getting the Performance Center version

I have both. At that price, definately the max. As far as trigger, for self defense, I prefer the rolling trigger of the max. It's not such a surprise if shooting 'cold'. You know when you are at the required pressure, a bit like a double action. The SW is more of the surprise break type. It may be nice within the range mindset, but I don't want surprises away from the range where prison enters the arena. Add a thin rubber grip sleeve, on the max, and its recoil is less than the SW. They are that close.

Dumped my P-365 for the Shield Plus, the P-365 just never fit my hand well it was too skinny, additionally the Shield Plus has a lot less recoil and is more controllable, yet still small enough for me to comfortably pocket carry.

@Chazman1946 3 жыл бұрын
@Clay Pylant If you have smaller hands and like the looks of the P-365 it may be right for you, I even think the P-365 is a nicer looking pistol, but I pick my pistols for how they perform, not how they look. Perhaps if the Sig has the interchangeable back straps like the new Taurus GX4 does, I would have kept it.

Besides not having an optics rail, a big miss with the shield plus is that is doesn't come with a rail for a light either. You can modify it to have a recover rail and get a light on it, but very few holsters fit that combo, and in all reality as one of the bigger CCW 9s it should definitely come with a light rail in the first place!

I don’t run optics on my pistols, so it’s of no use to me to have that feature on a pistol; however, I do understand it is all the rage today and it is good to see manufacturers producing what the market wants. That said, the Shield is the best micro pistol on the market IMO, but if someone doesn’t want to spend professional grade prices for a solid gun the Ruger Max 9 is the way to go. Ruger isn’t really recognized as a manufacturer of professional grade guns, but they certainly are not what I consider budget grade guns, such as Taurus. Ruger stands behind their products and actually issues official recalls, unlike Sig Sauer. Ruger firearms are the closest thing one can get to professional grade gear without buying professional grade gear.
