Have a all original Winchester 2,371,XXX Bought in 1984 at a small antique shop in mid Mo. Took rifle apart years ago have researched it couple of times over the years ,I believe I have a non molested rifle. Punch marks, rough machining, correct numbers, stock markings ect. I do not remember what the owner told me about the rifle. Low round count, tight, good shooter, trigger is great, better than my Springfield M1-A. Looks like rifle never left the states. Just came across your site. Went over the rifle again for the 3rd time after watching this seems all Winchester correct to date . I can disassemble it again ,have my son take detailed pictures and send them to you..Great site..

Whenever I see folks “restore” an M1, I am drawn back to an evening in the barracks many years ago. In order to demonstrate the genius of John Garand, the DI seated us in a large circle. We stripped our rifles down to the barreled receiver and bolts.... making piles of oprods, trigger group parts, guides, springs, etc. keeping only the receiver and bolt in our possession. Then we proceeded to take random parts from the piles and reassembled our rifles.

When you say Springfield Armory, you're talking about the USGI stuff and not the newer company, right?specifically my milled trigger guard stamped with a T. Secondly, my rifle is a mid July '43 SA......should my hammer spring housing and plunger be in the white? Finally, the long buttplate bolt any idea when shouldered vs. straight cut was used?

hello, I know about 10% or less about all the details about collecting Garands. I just got a LEAD 11-65 Winchester (July 1942) Service Grade from CMP North Store. It appears to have never been used since rebuild. Likely not much in it is Winchester other than the receiver. Stock was very tight to put back on and has orange triangle stamp and only has shipping and storage dings and dents. I have another to shoot and this one looked like new to me so that's why I got it. Although the counter guy said Winchesters were $200 more just for the name with the first one I had him look at and he said not to get it. But he liked this one and when I was leaving with the LEAD he said that I was going to like it. Should I leave alone or what's your opinion? Was it a good purchase, as in it's worth equal to or more than I paid?

so is there a source(s) of this information that shows nice pictures and labels each item as to type and/or manufacture? I am just beginning Garand collecting and right now without a stamped number on the items I am have no clear idea what some of them are. I have Duff's ww2 book but the picture are not that useful for some of the items. I am starting with what I think should be fairly easy, a SA Feb 1945 matching rec/barrel and have been able to find the parts with stampings, but I can't figure out for sure what some of the others are or if I see one for sale if it's what I need.

Which is the correct base for a Feb 1945 Garand? Narrow or wide base?

I am hoping the reason we are doing this becomes clear also, I have heard "In the white" and cannot get an explanation of what that means. The phrase was never used in the USMC while I was part.
