Is Apple's M1 Max chip worth it over the M1 Pro? How about the 24-core GPU vs 32-core? or the 32GB of RAM vs 64GB? Battery Life? ALL those questions answered in this review!

In this review, I discuss the drawbacks and benefits of upgrading to the 32-core GPU from the 24-core M1 Max. I also show off the performance differences between these new Macs and the previous Intel models, including the Mac Pro.
I also compare the M1 Max to other machines like a Maingear Vector 17 laptop to show how it performs under certain situations.
Finally, I talk about a recent discovery that has to do with Apple's M1 Max die itself.

Great. If I want to make just a simple mask with a pen on this impressive crazy fast MacBook Pro? Ah, not possible? Uhm... And if I want to do it in tablet mode on my knees or in the train? Yes, I know, I can carry a Mac And an iPad Pro... but the iPad does not support Capture One Pro or thousand of software that you have on the PC word... So in fact, all this power for what exactly? Ah yes, fast export of video. Cool. Really. Expensive niche but yeah!!!

@@digital-eyes So what the Mac is design for? You do not need to fill pdf with a Mac? You do not need to be able to make photo editing where you want to pan / zoom / scroll in direct interaction or draw mask with a pen? And when people are telling me to carry with me ON TOP of a 2k€ Mac ALSO a 1,8K€ iPad Pro + MK + stylus, the issue is that they do not have the program I need and is limiting me in 2 apps side by side at best (when supported, Deezer does not even work else that full screen for instance) and with just 2 size I can choose from and does not have file management capabilities and does not have... I mean, we all know the limitations of the iPad. So the thing is that I can develop photos on a Surface, in tablet mode, with direct interaction on the photos, with pen for precise movement of the sliders, or to make the mask, on the defacto standard Capture One Pro... that an iPad and a Mac just does not allow. Is Photo Editing not something the Mac should be design for? Also, should I have to carry 2 devices, double the weight, for 4k€ everytime I want to do something that require stylus or touch like on an iPad or a program ro workflow that the iPad does not support?

@stefan kay Seems like you deleted your comment. " buy a surface then" : I did. But that is beyond the point . All those benchmark videos need to be put back in perspective. Power is not the only thing that matters. " is use a graphics tablet for complex masks" : I know, you have no other choice if using only Appleproducts. You will not see them showing that because it becomes much less sexy having to carry 2 devices and drawing on a tablet besides your super mega powerful Mac, it kills the idea of the slick powerful device able to do more than the mega powerful working station. But the thing is that lighter, thinner device allow to do what required you a graphic tablet on top of your Mac. That is a huge advantage for many. " I’m sorry who is telling you to buy an iPad on top of a MacBook Pro? I just don’t get it. " : true, you do not need. But strangely enough, many appréciâtes tablets for what they are better at. And most Mac users…have an iPad. Indeed, I do not know one Mac user that does not have also an iPad. Go figure. " You have this vendetta or something" : no, not more than trying to spread this idea that Windows PC are dead just because the M1 chip is super powerful. Same as the iPhone chip being super powerful. It is not enough to make a compelling phone for anyone. " Also, you do realise you can use a computer perfectly well without a touchscreen," : well, is it not YOU that told me that you have a graphic tablet to draw mask ? You do not make the mask with your trackpad ? Lol ! " the world doesn’t end if you can’t reach out to sign your pdf documents. " : no. Or if you do not take notes, or if you do not annotate a screenshot taken with a press of the top button of your pen, or if you surf the web with the screen close to you without the keyboard on the way with the kickstand putting it at the right angle… But this is nice to have!

@@jeanbaptistelabelle hey man, I think this is an awful amount of effort on a product that you don’t like, that you don’t need and will never buy. Let me propose something, me personally never go to an android and/or windows related channel/website/blog/newsstand to point out all the things I don’t like from them, I think it will be a whole lot more beneficial to just unsubscribe and vote with your wallet? Don’t buy a Mac nor an iPhone nor an ipad nor AirPods nor appletv, etc either this generation or any future one. Another example, I don’t even have a clue what are the phone brands out there… HTC, One+, Samsung, LG and some others? What are their CPUs? I have no clue… models offered? I don’t know either, lots of them. RAM? No idea. But good enough for those that want and need them. I understand that dealing with “fanboys” from either side of the fence can be annoying, but the less the bear is poked the less it will maul back. Trust me when I say this, it’s perfectly fine to buy a Surface Laptop or equivalent to do all the simple or complex masks that need to be constantly done on the go. People that need that type of laptop/tablet will know which one to get just like someone that needs to drive high up mountains will be getting a pickup truck instead of a fast low ground clearance sports car.

Hahaha. So true. I've been doing that since my 2013, 15 inch retina. Computer was a beast, and now that I upgraded to the M1 Max, its honestly not that much faster in my use. But I will have this one for another 8 years minus any accidental damage, and its a luxury I can afford now (unlike putting myself in credit card debt and going into collections with my 2013 retina.)

Thanks again for another thorough test. You guys are great at this and thanks for the guidance. I opted for the 16” M1 Pro with 32 GB. I’m a photographer with very light video work. Your videos have helped me decide on not overkilling my purchase, and battery life is always part of my thing so going with the Pro chip is more than efficient for this photography enthusiast. Thanks again, Vadim and Max, for producing excellent down to earth videos.

Excellent video and a great tip on where money is best spent on these new machines! I have a suggestion for a test. Would you be interested in testing the industry standard Flight Sim program for flight training, using the M1 Max and 3 displays (display #1 for left window, display #2 for windshield, and display #3 for right window)? There are 3 great programs, but only one that is widely used for legit flight training and that program is X Plane 11. I saw a video showing the M1 Max with 32 GB of RAM and the 32 Core GPU. The RAM was not working hard at all, but ALL 32 cores of the GPU were constantly running at max and that was while connected to only ONE display. I'm really nervous about whether a laptop can hang with Flight Sim (for serious flight training) when in a 3 display configuration. I know there's a Demo mode available for X Plane 11, so you should be able to run that on the laptop without needing all the other hardware like Yoke, rudder pedals, etc. Thanks in advance for your help with this!! Following is a link to the video I mentioned. The channel is "CTR Transport and Technology", the video is entitled "Can I max out X-Plane graphics settings on the new MacBook Pro M1 MAX? Surprising result." and the link is: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m-CYeambvcjGg2w.html

Hey! I heard a rumor that since the M1 Pro/Max have dedicated video encoders/decoders (ProRes, H.264/265, etc.) that you can export a video in FCP and still have full access to the cpu/gpu? Like you can fully use your computer without the beachball even while it’s encoding a huge project. Is that true? I’d be fascinated to see the geek bench or Cinebench tests run while simultaneously exporting in FCP. Anyway, great content guys! Cheers! 🤘🏼🤘🏼

I'm glad I got the 32 GB model as my normal usage is about 24 GB of RAM. But what I've noticed is that memory usage creeps up to 32 GB and I typically reboot in three to four days. I assume that this is due to the memory leak issues still in Monterey. It's a minor nuisance that I can live with but I do hope that they diagnose and fix the memory leak problems soon.
@thebuddercweeper

@@thebuddercweeper It's easier to just reboot every couple of days. My M1 mini does not have this problem but it's still on Big Sur. I'll wait for the next maintenance release is out for a bit for people to verify that it's fixed. In the meantime, it's nice to have 32 GB of RAM.

Finally got my 14inch 32 core and tested it with Davinci Resolve. DR uses ALL the graphic cores, so for functions like stabilising this is essential. For the first time this function is actually usable on a laptop. Definitely go for 32 cores if you have this requirement. Tested the memory use as well. DR, C1, PS, Topaz Gigapixel open at the same time which is my usual way of working. 38GB used on this 64GB system, no swapping. So I guess 32GB would have been fine with this combination as I only work with small files in PS and only a few layers coming from the Sony A1 video.

I chose the 14 in. 32c 64gb version. I have a weird use case: I work from home but have a baby that I also take care of, so I value portability. Being able to hold it with one hand and take it around the house. My work requires over 40 gb of ram, so I need the 32c (only model that allows 64gb). Since I’m at home, I don’t need more than 8-10 hours of battery life on my use case. It lasts more than long enough, for when I need to move to another room etc . I don’t really need the gpu performance beyond what the 24 gives. I’m pigeon holed into getting a 32c. I value physical portability over gpu performance and battery life. TLDR; I need a lot of ram. As a work from home engineer dad, 14 max 32c 64gb meets/exceeds all of my needs.

How about when fans are manually max'd on the 14"? Did that mitigate the Apple throttling or is that a hard throttle even when temps are stable?

They've done plenty of tests in their other vids. It's a hard cap even with fans maxed. The 16" is just better for anyone who needs the best performance and battery life when considering between the 14" and 16".

I got my m1 macbook (mostly) correct. Only mistake I made was not getting 1tb since the 512gb does have a degraded performance compared to the 1tb, which I didn't think would be the case. But otherwise, 24 core m1 max with 32gb of ram seemed like a good sweet spot and it is. I had issues in normal power mode powering 2x thuderbolt mac displays along with the built in display. It was glitchy and laggy, but switched it into high power mode (which you only get with the m1 max) and everything is buttery smooth! Defiantly worth the $200 for the m1 max.

Hi guys! At 4:06 talking about the Prores decoders it seems like you're suggesting, that the m1 MAX has the Prores decoders, while the m1 PRO doesn't have them at all. From what's on the internet, it seems, that the Max chip, has the same hardware decoders just like the Pro, just twice as much of them. So, which is it - twice as much or some of them are not on Pro at all?

Would appreciate a video and/or some TIPS FOR NEW MACBOOK M1 PRO user, on setting up this laptop into a 2 monitor desktop setup, considering a standard set of functions which I will describe. Questions arise on how best to make all the connections for a common user scenario: some video editing and photo work from an iphone 13 pro (video mainly 1080P, some 4K, no pro res), some photo management, plus regular office software, and some 3d modelling. Possible future use of VR headsets. Functions: - 2 monitor seutp, using the laptop as a desktop computer. (Eventually to drive 2 - 4K monitors, but I have not got those monitors yet. see note below. - Backup drive (2 partitions, one for time machine backups). - Ethernet - USB out from laptop to enable usb outlets on the 2 monitors - Connect a flash drive for real time video editing from the laptop accessing flash drive data - Charging - Usb keyboard - Usb mouse. - Connect camera to transfer photos And then disconnect laptop from desktop setup, for portable use. Questions arise on what cables from what ports to meet all the above functions. For monitor connections I heard there is a KNOWN ISSUE that one monitor will go to sleep if you do not set it up right....something about you have to run cables not using 2 of the same ports, eg 2x HDMI. So something like 1 - HDMI to HDMI and 1 USB-C to Display Port, then that works? Not sure it that is ports on the laptop or ports on the monitor that is the issue.... ie. is this a ports issue on the monitors or a ports issue on the laptop? What combinations work? For all the other functions listed, what ports and what cables to use? Here is a draft setup for the purpose of getting some comments and suggestions. SCENARIO 1 Connections and cables used from the 6 laptop ports that are available to the monitor ports that are available: 1 Magsafe port: yes, used for charging to keep the other ports available for other uses. Apple magsafe cable. Current monitors do not have a usb-c connections. When I get 2 new 2 4k monitors, they would have usb-c as I understand that then then one can use that one usb-c to usb-c line to both deal with video on 1 of the monitors and also to keep the laptop charged, continuously working the charging function automatically. Is that correct?). 2 FIRST Usb-c port. Hdmi cable to HDMI in on left monitor 24” Dell. 3 1 HDMI port. Goes via Hdmi cable to mini display port adapter, into right monitor, 27” Dell. Now the 2 monitor leads are different and hopefully this avoids the problem of one monitor going to sleep. 4 Second USB-C port. connect to Belkin usbc to gigabit Ethernet adapter. 5 Third USB-C port. To a USB-C backup drive (wd MY PASSPORT ULTRA 5tb) and also when needed, disconnect that and alternately connect to A usb-c FLASH DRIVE ( Sandisk Extreeme Portable SSD 1TB) (usb 3.2 gen 2 - I think that is 10gps? And the usb-c thunderbolt port is capable of 40 gps?) to access stored video for video editing on the laptop while stored data is on the SSD. 6 SD Card Reader. So that is my draft connection plan but what is missing is how to connect the keyboard, mouse, and camera to transfer photos. How to handle this? Get from the Belkin usb-c digital AV Multiport Adapter, plug the usb-c end into 1 usb-c in the list above, and then use its usb-c, hdmi, and a usb-a as follows: - hdmi to hdmi still from this port, to the left monitor 24” DELL (but now that port is shared 3 ways) - usb-a could go to one monitor to enable 2 usb ports for mouse and keyboard. - The usb-c could then take the backup drive. And that usb-c could get the flash drive. This meets the functions described in 5 above. With the addition of the the Belkin usb-c digital AV Multiport Adapter, all the functions are met. But would the sleeping monitor problem come up with this hookup? 2 hdmi cables are used from the laptop. SCENARIO 2. Separately, for the same functions, a connection plan for 2 - 4k monitors that do have usb-c ports would be useful. To identify the PRODUCTIVITY monitors that work well for this MAC productivity application would be useful…… this is not a gaming setup. Call a gaming setup Scenario 3 perhaps and do a separate summary for that, otherwise it all gets too confusing? Has anyone found a good video on this topic? Thank you!

The mockup you show of the "Quadro" is probably unrealistic. It will likely, if Apple uses the CoWoS packaging, consist of two dual-chip packages, not a HUGE four-chip package. I could be wrong, of course, but that just would be too much of a change for using a new technology like a multi-chip packaging that hasn't been used before.

If and when GPU drivers are available for Linux on Apple silicon, I'd be very interested to see if you can max out the M1 Max GPU in the 14" to the same levels as the 16". If so, that would mean it's macOS limiting the M1 Max.

@@shiriajin Yes. M1 Air is rated at 18 hrs and the M1 MBP is rated at 20 hrs. The difference though is the amazing performance with the Air without a fan compared to the MBP which has a fan. The performance between the two are very similar where some out there have recommended the M1 Air over the M1 MBP. I have the M1 MBP and I love it so it just depends on your performances I suppose.

Yes. Imagine the frustration within Apple over the past five years as they watch their frickin phones blow away Intel's laptop chips. Their phones are maybe 3W when running full out but the crappy Intel laptop chip needs 45W and delivers LESS performance. I used to work at Apple. They have little patience for a supplier that cannot deliver. I can imagine Intel sales guys on their knees begging Intel not to go their own way and then returning to the mother ship and screaming at the engineering teams about their inability to deliver. It must have been horrible. You can bet the board offered the new CEO a giant pile of cash and stock (and wherever else he wanted, like complete freedom to spend money and fire people on the spot) to come back and restore a focus on engineering.

I don't know, they all beat a lot of Windows laptops at basically everything, they're just focused on beating different categories of Windows laptop. The Air is crazy fast for the size, price and fanless combination and it has crazy good battery life, but the screen is only slightly better than average, it only has two Thunderbolt ports, it's still not powerful enough to thoroughly beat the best-of-the-best CPUs from Intel and AMD and the GPU, while being the best integrated graphics ever, still couldn't match a modern dedicated GPU. The 2021 Pros basically beat the rest of the Windows laptops that the Air wasn't competing against in all the same ways that the Air did for lower end laptops, and more. I actually love how some people's complaints about the M1 were how it can only connect to one external display, so Apple just comes out at the next event and says "fine, is 4 enough for you?". Though it's technically 5 external displays, since the M1 Max can connect to all of those plus another Mac or Apple TV via AirPlay mirroring or an iPad through SideCar.

My latest video is all 8k & has a section where it is sped up 1000% & was the only section where it slowed down significantly when rendering on the latest Davinci studio 17. This is on a maxed out 16" M1 Max with 64gb ram & 8tb ssd. There was absolutely zero swap memory usage but it used 59 gigs of the 64gb available so you definitely need 64gb when rendering 8k or higher resolution. Nothing fancy on the 8k all-i video out of the Canon R5, h265 no luts or color grading. Editing was choppy at at times as well not absolutely smooth either

Hello! I am a graphic and web designer, and little by little I am getting into the audiovisual world. As a designer I mostly use Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign and XD; and personally I edit 4K videos in Premiere and later I would like to do an After Effects course. Currently I have a MacBook Pro 13” from 2016, i5 dual-core and with 16Gb of Ram, and the truth is that for some design and photography or video actions it goes quite slow, it heats up and the fans turn on very loud. Some time ago I thought in buying the MacBook Air M1 with 512gb and 16gb of ram, but now I have doubts with the new models. Yesterday I ordered the 14 "Pro with the M1 Max, 24 graphics cores and 32gb of Ram. Do you think it is an unnecessary waste of money and that the Air with 16gb will be fine for me? If you plan to export to h.264 / h.265 codec not to prores - M1 will be enough. Go for 16GB of unified memory. If You want faster exports to that formats go for M1 MAX, but in my opinion it’s not worth to pay 3x for only 2x faster exports. M1 is good enough for playing 3x 4K streams in fcpx.
