When I was at Parris Island, 50 years ago, we were only allowed to field strip our m14's. What you did was the armorer's job. Back then, we had to field strip our weapon blindfolded. You'd be surprised what can be done that way. I found your video very informative, Thanks for doing it.

I carried the M14 in Viet Nam when I was in the Marines until they took them away from us to issue us those damn M16 which we liked because they were so much lighter, but hated because of all the Jams we had. I had to tear my rifle down hundreds of times in Nam. Whenever we got into a firefight or got it dirty laying in the dirt. Never had a problem with the M14 Great rifle. I own the M1A now. Still a great rifle. Thanks for sharing.

+philip Anninos My father and uncle (Pararescueman and marine infantry respectively) hold the same opinion of the the M14/M1A vs. M16/AR15. We all own both platforms but primarily use our M1A's in competitions (my dad actually prefers his Garand). Personally, I love my M1A but while I served and as a contractor I've carried an M4 (save for when I would be assigned an M249) and haven't had any issues. That said, I tend to be extremely meticulous with my upkeep and cleaning so I'm sure that's helped me in my case.
@MarkBrown51506 жыл бұрын
Same thing with me, no warning just "Here take this new weapon with you" Eventually I got used to it but still missed my M14 - wish I still had it! My M1 Garand is very similar to the M14.

philip Anninos your right a bunch of my older construction buddy's were there with you they said the same thing about the M16 they loved the M14, I have one its beautiful but I live here in the communist republic of California so I had to remove the flash hider because it made it an assault rifle. So now I have to install a muzzle break so it doesn't look like shit. Thank you for you service in south east Asia god bless you and all the US troops world wide then and now !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's nice to see a video that's this professional on KZfaq, usually you gotta watch four different guys doing this in their basement with a hammer and a block of wood just to learn how not to do what your doing.
@MarkBrown51506 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing throughout the video. Job well done as only a Marine can do unless it is an Army guy doing it (Go Army.) So many firearms videos are of such poor and inaccurate quality they are a waste of time. Well done Tonyben.

Great job explaining how to disassemble / re-assemble bolt. I actually find it easier doing it your way while its still in the rifle. I keep a .30-06 casing in the butt with the cleaning kit for just this reason. Semper Fi!

I picked up a new M1A Scout Squad recently, joined the M14 Forum (m14forum.com) and learned about your videos. After watching a few times and acquiring the right tools, I started disassembly and will do a complete tear-down, inspection and reassembly using your lube video as a guide. Thank you very much for these videos!

Great work. Your M1A videos are the best. Thanks for the spent .30-06 case/extractor removal tip. I'd have never thought of that. I bought one of those M1/M1A bolt disassembly tools from Brownell's years ago and use it on my M1A and several M1's. It makes the job a piece of cake. Bought a similar tool for my FAL's, but the FAL tool is flimsy compared to the M1/M1A tool. Of course, nothing is easier than AR-15 bolt disassembly. All you need is a punch or the firing pin. Taught my daughter how to do it when she was 7.

This is an outstanding video and the best I've seen on how to disassemble one's M1A/M14 rifle. While I've yet to do more than field strip to clean my M1A, it is good to know this resource is there to show me how to properly and safely undertake a full disassembly.

Hands down the best disassembly & reassembly vid I have ever seen on the M1A! ABSOFREAKINGLUTELY the BEST!! That business with the .30-06 case to pull the bolt apart is inspired genius. Also, using the screwdriver as a lever to get the op-rod loose from its channel ! Wow ! Man O Man; Thank You for these tips. The .30-06 case will be a standard part of my tool kit from now on. Thanks Again Tony. I really appreciate it. Regards, Matt

I know this is an old video, but I just wanted to add my thanks. I could not get the trigger group out of my M1a loaded. This video pointed me to the mag catch pin (at 5:45). Sure enough, it had drifted out far enough to keep the trigger guard from rotating forward and releasing.This is a new rifle, not a well worn action, as suggested. A quick press on the side of the pin with a flat screwdriver, and my rifle is now apart. Thank you for saving me a trip to the gunsmith. AR

I use Plasti-Lube Grease for the bolt, op rod, sight threads and keep a reserve under the rear sight spring plate and inside the trigger housing. I like to use Copper Ease on the gas plug threads. Video is very well done. Sound is good as well as we can see everything you are doing. Great job!

Thanks for this detailed disassembly reassembly vid. I was considering if I'll get one but I'll just stick with my M16 as its much easier to clean and maintain.
@tonyben39 жыл бұрын
Glad it helped you. It's actually much easier and faster to clean an M14 than an M16. All the carbon builds up in the gas cylinder which only requires cleaning every 500 to 1000 rounds and you don't even need to break the rifle down for that. You should only detail strip your rifle once a year or so.

I have been looking diligent for another M-14 as the one I used in boot camp. I do not know the MOS of my drill instructor was, but he showed us how to completely strip down our M-14, including the bolt and trigger assembly. We also took our weapons into the showers with us twice. Once when it was issued by the armorer, and after being on the riffle range before the final dress parade inspection. I have talk with army friends and why they did not receive as much detailed instruction on there own issued weapons.

At the U.S Military Academy, we were allowed to take everything apart except the bolt, the trigger housing and the rear site. We had the real M14 so there was also a disconnector that sat on the right side of the rifle under the operating rod. This rotated down to remove. We did have the auto fire locks and never removed those. Our rifles back then were used for qualification as well as summer field training and drill back in the early 70s so were fully functional except for the auto function.
