There is no way, they will announce macOS for iPads in WWDC 2024. They would never release Final Cut Pro 2 for iPadOS, when you can get full Final Cut Pro just a month later. What I can imagine, is that they are developing a "macOS like interface". Which still will be iPadOS, but which a better filesystem, better mouse and window manager.

I honestly wish they'd allow the iPad to just dual boot both iPadOS AND macOS! iPadOS is a great system for general content consumption, but as soon as you need to do serious professional work, MacOS is just objectively better. The iPad hardware is capable of running both flawlessly, so IDK why they wouldn't just make it run both?

But eventually Apple is gonna have to bite the bullet and cancel one or the other, kind've like how the IPhone naturally drove the iPod into extinction! The iPad and MacBook are just gonna get harder and harder to coexist, because they serve such a similar function. Eventually one will acquire all the benefits of the other and effectively they will fuse into one singular product!

Apple is trying to thread the needle to keep iPad going by giving it a keyboard and a pencil, but it can’t give it full macOS functionality. At least I don’t see that happening in the foreseeable future.

I am going to jump ship over to Samsung. The Tab S9 Ultra has a bigger display and has Dex. The display on the Ultra is very nice, just as nice as the new ipad pro. Done with Apple and there over priced tech.

Two existing options: (1) Purchase a discounted MacBook with broken screen and de-lid the device. Use the MacBook base as your Magic Keyboard for iPadOS with universal control or use the iPad as the MacBook screen via mirroring. There are shortcuts available to initiate macOS mirroring wirelessly to iPad screen - initiated from iPadOS. (2) Ditch MacOS and RDP into as many Windows desktopOS instances as you want. Cellular iPad is ideal for this. Either use your own windows hardware or your own virtualized windows instances on home server or cloud.

Even when the m4 comes to Mac’s I’m not sure that I’ll upgrade. The m4 finally looks like a nice boost over the m1 but my m1 still feels very fast. I’m content with what I have for now.

I want iPadOS to get a better file manager, window manager, the ability to connect to more peripherals and devices, and a terminal for devs and people who work with code like me as a CS student. The way they could do this is just, when it detects you’ve connected a Magic Keyboard, it reveals a new hidden page on the Home Screen that is basically a Mac desktop. So all you have to do is swipe over from the side to get into “Mac mode”.

Even with an M1, on any machine having less than 16GB of RAM the experience would be complete trash. What percentage of iPads would that requirement eliminate?

If I could run desktop app like my phpstorm IDE for coding then I would replace my MacBook pro right away. Without desktop app , iPad is just a media player device for many people except content creators and artists and music composers.

I’m still on my 2020 iPad Pro with the keyboard and pencil. It still looks new. When I bought it, the promise of full Photoshop lured me in. Just this year, they added some good features. I use my iPad as a laptop most of the time, and I jump to my Mac Studio when remote and need the desktop. If the browser on the iPad were the same as on the desktop, it would be awesome, and some features don’t work on the iPad.

Apple will never let the iPad Pro reach its full potential. They will keep it a bridge device to protect MacBook sales. Putting MacOS on an iPad Pro, would completely change their business model.

MacOs is not ready for touch input, to be fair. Most people in the comments think of a device with keyboard attached, but a (touch first) tablet has to work without keyboard or trackpad/mouse. I'm a user of Surface devices (with Intel, not ARM) from day 1. I seen the hate Windows 8 got and how Windows 10/11 still have issues on those devices (some things are even worse than with Win 8). The same time I been using Macbooks for work. MacOs is not even close to the level of "touch firendly", that Windows 8 was, when Microsoft launched Surface. Sure, Apple could invest to optimise MacOs for touch. But that is a heavy task, there are just so many sections to optimise ....

Waiting to see if Qualcomm delivers on a full Windows 11 experience with the Snapdragon X. I can't wait for Computex. Apple needs the competition. I actually think the iPad Pro getting the most advance tech is because of the shift in priority to the Vision Pro. Vision OS needs the performance efficiency offered by the M4 Silicon.

If you think it's bottlenecked by iPadOS, just buy a Mac and get yourself into MacOS. It supports most app functionality of iPad(barring touchscreen) and it will eventually get m4. We all have choices. Edit: People saying it needs MacOS just so that they can say they have options or "innovation" are welcome to do so if combining fridge and TV is innovative. Also I hardly remember any argument for s9 ultra tablet or whatever it's called for having the same windows functionallity. And don't start on Dex or whatever. It just presents a desktop UI. There is nothing desktop about it. Neither features or applications. Period

Just marketing - the 13" is really the same 12.9" screen. It's like when LG refers to their 31.9-inch monitors as 32-inches. Same nonsense. You will still need new accessories simply because of the change in magnet locations for the new camera position. Understandable but still unfortunate - granted, if you can afford a Pro, not sure that is a deal breaker.

"useless" is very overdramatic. It has a small niche target audience, and obviously, most people would be better off with a laptop. For me, it's not brain surgery; I have both. I upgrade each device every six years. Best of both worlds and zero compromise. Anyone whining about carrying two devices, don't bother, as that is tiresome.

@@simpromovie Perhaps the surface is worse.... I've bought CUBASIS as a sketchpad Digital Audio Workstation for iPad. I don't like it. I own Cubase. I would like to run Cubase. Cubase can run on a dumbed-down M1 mac mini, but it cannot run on an M1 ipad. I'm not renting Logic Pro, I own a copy. I'm not paying for it again. This is obviously not for me. I'm not a graphical artist. I'm not a videographer. There is a lot to NOT like about an iPad. I'm happy with my Macbook Pro and Mac Studio... But the iPad pro has been the worst money that I have ever spent on technology.

I used the Surface Pro for a year and than switched to the Surface laptop. It was the much besser device....(at last until Apple released the 15" MacBook Air which I am using now)

Definitely not worth the upgrade. I still have an M1 IPad Pro that I could not use; I upgraded it to 1T to get the 16GB of ram😢 I am just able to use some features on it, so I am definitely not willing to lose anymore money unless it’s warranted. Also, my magic keyboard did not hold up well.

100% agree with everything you said - and yes, my $300+ iPad keyboard cracked the first year. Some of the apps I need won't run or aren't offered on iPadOS and you're limited to Safari or webkit-based products. When I bought the M1 iPad Pro, I bought into this (and other reviewer's) "hopeful hype" and also went for 1TB/16GB RAM in hopes of a dual-boot or virualized MacOS option. This time - I'll hold off until actual product ships.

@@stefanjohnsson5661you should be able to use it like an enhanced display Wacom with your desktop, it should have enterprise level file system and the Ui should be elegant, Final Cut should be bi-directional between your Mac and iPad, you should be able to target the iPad from your Mac when previewing Final Cut Projects, you should be able to drive a Cinema Display from your iPad in slave mode while using a standard keyboard and mouse, and the iPad should support Mac-like UI conventions when using it as a desktop machine. As a pro consumer, I expect a pro level product and constant refinement for pro workflows so that my projects can travel with me and I can have maximum productivity.

@@BSingh-on4qr I just spent an hour or so reading about this on Reddit. According to the threads I've followed, UTM is unusably slow because of QEMU. And sadly, I cannot experiment and "see for myself" because my iPad is iPadOS 17.+ - oh well...

Totally agree. I ordered the 13 inch ipad pro with 1tb, but it would be so much worth it if it could run a version of mac os, even if it’s within an app that runs a virtual machine, like a version of Parallel, so that way we could even run a version of windows, for theses rare times that we need it.

What sucks is that power apps like FCP require subscription on iPad. Unless you’re using it to make money or you have lots of money to waste, FCP on iPad doesn’t make sense.

I have a 2020 iPad pro and it still works flawlessly. Only issue is the battery, but it cost about $150 to replace. The only thing that would motivate me to upgrade to the new ones is Mac OS on iPad, if that doesn't materialize I don't see any reason to upgrade to the new ones. I would consider maybe getting one of the M2 iPads just for the external monitor support.

Thank you for this video. As a iPad Pro 12.9 M1 user, I agree that it is a bit of a hard sell for me to replace it and all of my major accessories for the M4 Pros at this time. My current iPad is still snappy and has actually improved in usability with every iPadOS update. Even if a few of the iPadOS18 additions could end up being exclusive to the M4 iPads, I’m skeptical that there would be anything major enough for me to justify a hardware upgrade. IPadOS is so lightweight and efficient that 2018 iPads are still great, and I don’t believe that is a bad thing at all by itself as a customer. To justify more users paying $2000 or over on newer iPads, though, there needs to be more use-cases to take advantage of all of that extra power.

My M1 MBP is still rocking it. I’d consider an upgrade just because my current iPad Pro is like 8 years old now, but even that still does what I need it to do. Having something that I can use like I do my MBP but also can be clipped to my mic stand…yeah, I’d consider an upgrade.

Im considering if I switch my Mac mini M2 to a iPad Pro M4 but idk ... Mainly to have the freedom so take it around the home. Otherwise it would be sitting on the desk and connected to a Monitor for Daily driver with a keyboard and mouse to game (Cloud Gaming PC), surft, KZfaq, etc. All stuff I do atm with my Mac^^

What catches my attention is the Escape key! This may be a very good hint for upcoming changes to iPadOS. I’m coming from the iPad Pro 12.9 2021 and ordered the 1 TB iPad Pro 13 inch with the Keyboard and the new Pencil Pro. It costs 2827€ including VAT of 19% here in Germany (3047$). I’m keen to see how much iPadOS will be changed in order to get some better pro experience. My MacBook Pro will stay in any case, I think. They will not cannibalise the MacBooks even though iPad are more expensive if you spec them up.

I’m gonna buy the 11 inch iPad Pro, it would be nice a full macOS but I don’t really need it; I’m upgrading from a 7 year old iPad. I like that they put the M4 and the tandem oled, I’ll be keeping the new tablet by at least 5 years so is a future proof item.

I think that’s why the new Magic Keyboard works just with the new iPad Pro. I think the iPad Pro will run a new version of macOS for touchscreen when it’s paired with the keyboard.

I agree, it's gettin' weird over there in Cupertino. I suspect they'll converge all the things eventually, but not at the speed that will give them their own Windows 8-style debacle. I'm not sure what a touch-MacOs convergence looks like, but I sure don't want what Windows is doing.
