M440i Gran Coupe - Buy This or the BMW i4?

First, let’s break down what the M440i Gran Coupe is because its name might cause some confusion, for those new to BMW’s nonsensical nomenclature. The M440i Gran Coupe is part of the 4 Series family, though despite the “coupe” in its name, it’s actually a four-door sedan with a hatchback trunk. It's also nearly identical to the BMW i4 electric car, of course, sans the drivetrain.
Grand touring cars are supposed to be fast and the BMW M440i Gran Coupe is most certainly fast. On paper, at least. Its B58 engine is as brilliant as ever, pumping out 382 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, all of which goes through the ubiquitous eight-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive. BMW claims a 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds and that’s likely even a bit conservative.
But at the same time, the BMW i4 M50 is equally, if not faster, and extremely fun to drive. It delivers 536 horsepower and 586 lb-ft of torque.
Furthermore, BWM also sells the M340i, another four-door BMW with the exact same powertrain and similar performance for almost the same price.

I’m not sure how many BMWs I’ve owned since 1974 [a 1967 BMW 1800] thru yesterday [a 2017 BMW 650i Gran Coupe]. Yea. THAT grill. But, after driving the M440i Gran Coupe xDrive, I went for it. Couldn't be happier. The grill is growing on me.

Love this car, I've transitioned slowly over to ev with owning two PHEVs 330e and I'm currently driving a MB 300e, but I'm now going EV all the way and going back to BMW again, I have ordered a white I4M50. Got to testdrive it here in Sweden unfortunatly directly after a snowstorm so the driving conditions was not ideal but the car was still a joy to drive, I had a huge grin on my face and it handled really well on snowy/icy roads. Its a beast and no I didn't cancel my order 🙂

Originally I was attracted to the i4 M50, but wait time was over 16 mos in Canada Nov 2021, walking out of the dealership I saw a black M440i GC with cranberry interior and carbon fibre trim and it was immediate lust. Ironically Cadillac had just notified me my CT4 Blackwing I had a deposit on just arrived. So with deposits on 2 cars I really struggled to choose but after countless comparisons the M440i was the right choice for me even over the M50. This car checks so many checkboxes! It's not the best at anything but excellent at everything. 3 months in I can tell you every time I do a 1-2 shift and the exhaust growls and burbles a huge smile follows on me and my passengers. Being 800 pounds lighter than the M50 the handling is clearly better and I much prefer having the control buttons on the dash vs the M50. These cars have very sophisticated menus so when my wife drives it she just wants to push a few buttons not go looking through menus. For owners that do long highway trips with passengers especially in winter I question why you'd consider the M50, recharging at highway chargers is expensive and really time consuming, at almost 40 mpg the M440i is as economical and less stressful. Again weather plays a big factor on range so on those cold days when you have multiple seat warmers, steering and defroster /heater going it's a game changer. Overall which ever you choose the 4 series GC is an excellent choice and should be the car of the year! Oh and those grills... they grow on you, when I see other BMW's now with their small grills I think wow that's so yesterdays design. LOL

Many of these reviews don’t consider those of us coming from an X6, but now go to the diy home center 2x a month, rather than every weekend. 97.5% I am driving alone. The X6 is a big SAC, so for a change, the GC made sense.

@@bmwblog Definitely a unique comparison, I spent a long time comparing features, to make sure I wasn’t losing something important. But as a techie, what got me was the curved glass dash, and man, the straight 6 is just amazing.

I have 2 older M cars because there's nothing since the e92 that has gotten me excited to buy new. That being said, I have a production date of April for the i4 M50. I actually like that BMW is not radically changing the design, but incorporating the latest tech for an electric car. Based on the reviews, it's been overwhelming positive. The model will only get better.

Thanks for your comment. In my experience chatting with BMW i4 experts, that was exactly the idea. To get a car that feels familiar, versus something totally new. I loved the i4 M50 also

I'm getting the m50 soon and it was after a ton of research. M50 ticks all the boxes apart from the handling. It suffers from the weight issue. Not enough to put me off but I'm keeping my expectations low on that side. Straight line however... Sheesh!

It is interesting how the driving characteristics are similar to the i4 M50 and reviewers attribute those to it not being a dedicated EV platform whereas it is actually just 'the platform' regardless of engine type.

Dude you lost me at the point you said you can’t understand why this over the i4. Maybe because there are still car enthusiasts that like sound, vibrations, and the things that come along with mini explosions propelling you forward. Better for the environment? C’mon man! It’s bs at this point in time. I also prefer to not plan my day around a “fill up”

A lot of the premium cars in Europe are company lease cars. In most cases you need to have 4 doors for a company to accept the car. 2 doors are considered sport cars. So that is why you would choose GC over the coupe.

@@bmwblog I meant why someone would choose a 4GC over the regular 4series (2door). It's a shame they don't make a hybrid 4GC. The i series is nice, but electric car charging infrastructure is not reliable enough. In our company sales people and execs are prevented from taking pure electric cars if they occasionally or frequently have to travel more than 150 kilometers. Chargers not working, or full, and unpredictable charging performance prevents the cars from being reliable tools. Then there is the issue with very cold weather ev performance. 4 execs traded their Tesla in last year for similar issues. So by definition the i4 is not a GT (grand tourer).

I rather choose this than the i4 because i don’t know how reliable the i4 will be, what problems can come in the near future, how expensive those problems can be. For the first EV model sorry not taking my chances.

Historically, the EVs might be a bit more reliable. Had a few i3 cars and no issues in 7 years. Less parts to break down

As per all the tests I looked at, the i4 is more sluggish than the ICE and quite normal as quite heavier as well... strange that he does not observe on that as he does make the comment for the GC feeling heavier than the 3 or coupe.. and rigtfully so. So the m440i is simply sportier to drive than the i4 m50 (quicker acceleration is just one aspect of a sporty drive). I ordered the m440i as not quite ready to leave the ice.. simply love the sound and vibe of an ICE, and its (read less heavy) drive. Not convinced either on electric reliability (tesla has a huge head start and is still not the most reliable so bmw will have to learn as well) and on the "green" aspect (riding is green but the production is far from... still lots to be improved/developed). Just my humble opinion and pretty sure you will enjoy either choice :)

The i4 is heavier, yes, but doesn't feel sluggish to me. I thought it was super snappy, thanks to the torque. But yes, the M440i feels heavier than M340i. Larger car, so expected

Price € 67k vs. 70k i4 M50 before promotions and discounts As the i4 has much lower maintenance costs only range and motor sound speak for the ICE version 😉

440i cause, even if it's strange to say now, the i4 will be outdated in few years, when people will understand that BEV weren't the future they constantly depicted. While the ICE powertrain of the 440i will remain a pure, classic, excellent example of BMW engineering. Obviously IMHO and with all due respect.

ICE cars are fundamentally flawed. Low efficiency. High maintenance cost. Pollutes the air. No, we're not going back. Enjoy the depreciation of your new ICE car. Disclaimer: I ordered an i4 M50. ^_^

Why the M440i GC over i4 M50. No public charging stations here in the mid south. Plus lots of power outages. I’m happy when my refrigerator has power. I went M440i GC XDrive. Just had a week of temps close to 0. Lots of dead EVs. No thanks.

The i4 did not drive as good as the M440i in my opinion. Went for the gas powered one. Disagree on the environmental benefits of an electric car so there is no way that’s the right environmental choice.

I picked the BMW 440i GC dravit gray. 440i is much sportier and has better handling than 340i.

@@bmwblog No, nothing offensive. Just questioning why the guy felt he had to mention the front grill a million times in the opening 2mins of the video. I think it’s time everyone gets over it. It’s way less offensive now than it was when we all first saw it. It’s like he was short of things to say (apologising for his backpack sliding across the back seat?) I liked the car, thought the review dragged on unnecessarily.
