Your reviews are getting better and better. :) And no hunting AF. I can only imagine how much work you put into this 22 min long video... Yeah noticed RyzeM and other "glitches" but honestly if I'd tried to do a video like this I would have made 5 times more mistakes... Overall good video! Now I know exactly enough about M1 Mac and that is: gonna go for a PC anyways: yes Mac Mini is small... but you can't take it and not take a monitor on a travel... so... for a home / studio setup PC wins. For now. ;)

Thanks for the informative videos. This looks almost like the perfect computer for me. I've been using a late 2012 model for ages and it's perfect for most of the Adobe stuff I do. It's small, cheap and silent - the extra speed would be most welcome. Unfortunately I'm also dabbling with Gravity Sketch in VR (with an Occulus Quest which I hope to tether) and using Blender quite a bit. Both look like they're going to be problematic with the M1. So it looks like I'll be using your videos to build a gas-guzzling PC monster in the new year. Can't say I'm looking forward to Windows again - and I have no idea where I'm going to put it . Any thought on a compact RTX3060 build? I suppose getting rid of the heat is the issue.

if you’re using the mac mini for roughly 6 hours a day under heavy load, which is already a stretch, it will consume roughly 23.8 times less power than the ryzen pc - at that rate it probably accounts to something more like over $100 or even $200 in yearly savings (in US electricity prices), but you feel free to do the math, i gave up half way through and made a relatively informed guesstimate.

The philosophy behind these first gen systems is easy: Keep everything the same and change only one variable, the processor. It's the perfect marketing tool to see if users experience the difference. They did exactly the same thing with the transition to Intel. They limited the RAM/storage/expandability options because they don't want pro users to jump ship before all the major software is ported to the new architecture.
@yannisgk

Most pro users wouldn't jump train any way. A lot of the ones I know just run with stuff one generation behind. Apple is 1, puting the product out there for coverage to make a bigger upset 2nd gen, and 2 not overstepping themselves. I believe the the limitations on ram and port options have to do with the chip themselves. I am assuming the m1x/m2 what ever they call it will have a higher degree of compatibility and gives apple more time to work things out. I am assuming the m1x will replace the intel 4 tb3 variants in due time.

Im still a multitasker with dozens of tabs open, more than 1 design programs open always, emails, communications apps etc. I currently have an older macbook pro from work and looking to get a private workstation for the homeoffice to keep. Do you think this M1 is futureproof at all? Im reading to stay away from 1st generation models, which kinda makes sense.. but theres nothing announced that would come in M1's place any time soon.

I built the Mac Killer PC and one of the best aspects is the read/write speed. I really can't stress enough to other builders and users: if you want to improve your user experience get the fastest hard drives you can afford. NVME SSD drives plugged in to a motherboard that can use them to their full potential is a massive game changer. Thanks again for putting together that build, I'm absolutely loving mine. HOW THE HELL does the Mac Mini M1 use only 5 watts during idle??? That's so unbelievable. Is there a battery inside acting like a capacitor, storing energy for use so the constant draw is low?

from Bloomberg: "For higher-end desktop computers, planned for later in 2021 and a new half-sized Mac Pro planned to launch by 2022, Apple is testing a chip design with as many as 32 high-performance cores. Apple engineers are also developing more ambitious graphics processors. Today's M1 processors are offered with a custom Apple graphics engine that comes in either 7- or 8-core variations. For its future high-end laptops and mid-range desktops, Apple is testing 16-core and 32-core graphics parts."

Apple have steadily been closing off the option to upgrade memory and storage for some years now. This gives them exclusivity on taking everyones money for those upgrades, at insane prices. Today, if I were building a PC or Hackintosh, I could have bought 32Gb of Corsair ram for £118, and as I did yesterday, add a 1Tb NVMe WD Black SSD drive for the same money. Apple would charge probably 3-4 times that much each for that kind of upgrade if it were available in the case of the memory. I can understand why they've locked off the laptops given their complexity, but they really should be allowing end users to upgrade at least the storage, if not the memory too on the Mac Mini and the iMacs. The point with the Mac Mini case looking half empty means there is the physical space to allow this, but not the will on from Apple to allow it so they can keep bleeding users for every pound, dollar, etc. I'm waiting for the next iteration of the Mac Mini or a cut down Pro to appear before I'll upgrade my current hardware (2015 MacBook Pro 15" and a 2009 Mac Pro).

I would rather say Intel will be f$%ked when the PC world decides to go ARM. I mean, I wish Intel well and all, but they haven‘t exactly shown much capacity for innovation lately. Though apparently they‘ve done a good job with the new Iris Xe graphics, so maybe there‘s hope. But either way, there‘ll be enough manufacturers producing high performance ARM chips to keep the Windows and Linux worlds well supplied with shiny new toys. This isn’t the death of the PC world, this is just the death of the ludicrously outdated x86 instruction set. Finally. After more than 25 years of waiting.

The thing that interests me about the m1 mac mini the most is the low power consumption relative to what you are getting, the thing that turns me off from upgrading from my i7 6700 pc is that CPU's have gotten significantly more power hungry lately and 65w tdp CPU's today can consume a 100w in actually usage while my i7 6700 has never gone above 64w of usage.

Also having the SSD on the SOC in the new M1, how does the boot etc. fare when the ssd fails?
@lokalkakan
@lokalkakan 3 жыл бұрын
Depends on Apple, the SSD is on the soc and not the die, so it's not really connected to the CPU in any different way. The operating system should see it just like any other storage connected to the pcie lanes, booting from external SSD should be possible just like it's right now.
@slipoch6635
@slipoch6635 3 жыл бұрын
@@lokalkakan Yeah maybe, I'm just thinking of all the bricking the T2 security chip caused in macbooks. the fact their systems look for serials on the devices, and will not boot if it cannot find the correct serial. Also depending on how the SOC has been designed, a failed device attached may still cause issues, even if you boot from an external drive, it still has access currently to the internal ssd and it's serial and it may still be 'looking' for them. Apple has repeatedly shown a remarkable lack of planning when it comes to these sorts of artificial security measures. (brick if a serial doesn't follow a particular pattern, brick the system if hdd serial not found, brick if it cannot see a serial for more than 1 sec, etc.) and then they had the hide to try to charge for fixing these known issues. (They got several warnings from fair trading/ACCC over here)

So if the future is ARM based processors, should one buy lesser specs right now and so feel less bad about junking one's pc in roughly 5 years? And how do you see say AMD's CPU designs panning out, say 5 years from now?

I think Apple is making Intel, AMD, and Nvidia a little bit worried considering that this is Apple's first attempt at making their own desktop CPUs and it's outperforming many CPUs from Intel and AMD at the same price point and what's really impressive is how efficient the M1 is, My iPhone's battery can power the M1 lol.

Some possibilities for not changing the Mac mini form factor include: keeping the focus on the new Apple silicon and as a way to start getting early adopters and developers ready. They could have done better, but in a certain way it is enough to get the ball rolling. One thing this has done is make people realise the ARM is a processor that has more potential that just in mobile phones. It also highlights that Intel seems to be sleeping at the wheel, while AMD and now Apple is leaving them behind. I am Mac user who has lived two previous transitions (68K to PPC, PPC to x86), each time was because the existing chipset was at the end of the road or being taken in a different direction. I am curious where things will go and really hope that Apple will deliver big time on the high end.

Great video, but it would have made way (way) more sense to do all the tests on Davinci being an optimized application (and compatible Mac/Windows/Linux) as opposed to Premiere pro running under Rosetta. It may have performed a lot better, on every device (Premiere is slow and buggy af) and way more on the M1. Obviously, studio version is needed to enable GPU acceleration on PC. (But it's a one time purchase as opposed to Creative cloud's expensive subscription). It was the one video I was wating for since the arrival of M1, but I felt a bit disappointed when I saw that all the tests were on Premiere haha. Thanks you anyway, this is still helpfull !

The huge advantage for desktop vs laptop is scalability. Ryzen 3950x PC on this test is not only 3x faster multicore, but it is also scalable. You can upgrade your hardware with more memory, a larger SSD, or a faster GPU. Mac Mini despite that it is a desktop doesn't allow you to do this, so it has disadvantages of laptops. So, the question is, why do I need a desktop computer if it has no advantage as should be for a desktop computer?

I believe a new mac mini as well as macbook pro 16 will probably be released Q3 2021 with redesigns. For Apple, it didn't make sense for them to redesign the mac mini twice. I do believe the m1 mac mini will also get the case redesign when the new one with the m1x + 4 usb4 (tb3) ports comes out.

I also ask myself qhats going to happen once apple joins the gaming market??? What i still miss on apple is the config choices. Imacs are cool but ibdont want to buy a full monitor and computer setup and the issue with the mini always was that its setup was behind the macs. If there is a mini with latest config available for a decent price i would immediately buy one.... lets say m1, 16cores up to 64gb ram, i am in.

I'm pretty sure the blender test didn't run cause there is at least one scene that requires 16gb VRAM alone to use. I believe Red RAW 8K in Resolve also requires 16gb VRAM alone to play. So this 16gb unified RAM is far from what is needed to pro application... When they hit 64 or 128 it might be usable. AMD finally added raytracing to match nVIDIA, I just wonder in Pro units are we going to see some Apple Silicon models that lack that feature or is there perhaps going to be some hybrids first with Apple CPU and AMD GPUs before Apple can totally design their own systems. In the end it all comes down to developer support and peripheral support. Apple says Rosetta translates stuff, but it ain't that simple. Old program still don't necessarily work on the new OSX (as was the case even before, let alone now) and people are reporting things like TB RAID systems dying on Big Sur

Sorry for the long comment, but... yeah I got a little carried away, but these are some ideas I came up with I think would really change the way Windows users look at Apple products. 21:49 I personally haven't used a mac machine first-hand (yet), but IMO they could go in two ways: a) make the Mac Mini M1 smaller and more compact (and maybe even more USB 4/Thunderbolt ports), or b) do like you said and make it more expandable. Again, a mainly-windows user speaking here, but, heck, Apple could even go in their way of making proprietary things and design their own type of add-on memory, just so it makes the Mini M1 a better investment, as you would be able to add more memory (oh yeah, and that could mean either storage (as in SSD) or RAM -type memory), and maybe even make use of the internal space that's just sitting there, like being able to mount some kind of small, little SSD to, and connect it via internal USB-C/[insert other type of port here], BOOM you have more storage. Personally, I have a little Samsung T5 500GB external hard drive, and I think that Apple could make a huge jump in the overall wow factor as compared to regular PC's if they just added slots to put external, already-owned (by you, the buyer, just to clarify), even if you have to buy some kind of proprietary connector in order to use them together just so Apple can have some more of your money. However, while yes, you could go and but a pre-build, high-end PC for less (and possibly even go through the pain of trying to make it a Hackintosh if you really wanted to (and yes, I know the advantages and disadvantages of doing that)), the Mini M1 with those extra little hardware-related features gives you the ability to have a very small form-factor PC with high-end performance and great a) internal hardware expansion and b) amazing performance in software, once programs have been optimized for the M1 SoC (may I also mention the super fabulous looks and feels of MacOS ;) Even I'm jealous, being a Windows user, of MacOS's amazing looks, I mean... it just _looks_ soo good!!). So yeah, those are some ideas I had, mainly aimed towards making the Mac Mini M1 more PC-like (therefore diluting its special nature of being an Apple product), while being the thing that would absolutely, 100% make the Apple Mac Mini M1 a much more blowing-away and drawing-in product, one that would most definitely make it a good, solid reason to switch (at least for me). Hey Apple, you should hire me as a designer and idea-comer-upper lmao ;))))

I think you get better performance adding a 140mm or 200mm Noctua fan with the cover open if pushing it. They do sell fan bases for the Minis. Minis being all compact and using just that little fan, this is pretty impressive... compared to a custom PC that uses fans, big heatsinks, ect... I'll still wait for a M2 version, never buy the 1st gen.
