Mac Studio Dust Sucked Up In 3 Months & Simple Fix 🥳 Keyboard & Mouse Fail Designs 🤯

I purchased an Apple Mac Studio in 2022, it took 3 months to be delivered and I have used it for 3 months. I knews from my previous iMac that dust ingestion can build up over time. The Mac Studio with it's BIG M1 ULTRA chips and super computer ability needs incredible cooling. Much of the Mac Studio height is hiding two huge cooling fans and heatsink that exhaust to the rear. The air intake is under the computer which to me seems really weird. When my Mac Studio arrived one of the first things I did was make a simple custom dust filter to snuggle under the computer around the air intake. What has been a big surprise is how much dust my Mac Studio has collected in my custom filter. In fact it's a tad scary. In the video I look at filter material options and make another simple filter. Of course do this at your own risk as it is changing the airflow design of the Mac Studio. But my biggest concern is what happens if all this dust is allowed to collect and coat the inside of the Mac Studio and clog the cooling fans. I could see that going on with my 8 year old iMac at the 6 year point. Apple make amazing gear most of the time, but there are some designs that are not so amazing. I look at the Keyboard & Mouse that come with my Mac Studio. Yeah amazing in all the wrong ways.
The Mac Studio was announced on March 8, 2022, alongside the Apple Studio Display, and released on March 18. At the time of launch, customers reported shipping delays for the Mac Studio as late as May 2022. The delay has been attributed to the global chip shortage.
Rear ports : The Mac Studio is designed as a higher-grade machine than the Mac Mini but lower than the Mac Pro, and is positioned similarly to the now-discontinued iMac Pro. There are two models which are driven by ARM-based SoC: the M1 Max or the M1 Ultra, which combines two M1 Max chips in one package. The Mac Studio has an identical width and depth to the Mac Mini, both about 8 inches (200 mm), but is around 3.7 inches (94 mm) tall. It has four Thunderbolt 4 (USB 4) ports, two USB 3.0 Type-A ports, HDMI (up to 4K @ 60 Hz), 10Gb Ethernet with Lights Out Management[9] and a headphone jack. The front panel has two USB-C ports (Thunderbolt 4 in M1 Ultra models) and an SD card slot (that supports SDXC cards and UHS-II bus), making it the first desktop Mac since the 2012 Mac Pro to have I/O on the front. It is cooled by a pair of double-sided blowers and a mesh of holes on the bottom and back of the case, which helps reduce the noise of fans spinning. Nevertheless, there have been extensive early reports of excessive fan noise. Mac Studio models with the M1 Ultra are 2 pounds (910 g) heavier than those with the M1 Max as they are equipped with a larger copper heat sink. Apple says the Mac Studio performs 50 percent faster than a Mac Pro with a 16-core Intel Xeon processor.
The Mac Studio supports up to four 6K monitors connected via Thunderbolt, and a fifth monitor via HDMI. It was introduced alongside the Apple Studio Display, a 27-inch 5K monitor with an integrated 12 megapixel camera, six-speaker sound system with spatial audio and Dolby Atmos support and a height adjustable stand.

Any update on this filter by chance? Have you done a mark 4 version where you use the other cloth? If so, which one would you recommend?

I picked up a Mac Studio a few months ago. It is the first non-PC computer I have ever owned. I got the base model and thought the keyboard and mouse were expensive. That is until I saw the Australian tax. For us in the US the white version of the keyboard is $179 and the white mouse is $79. For some weird reason, it’s $20 more for the black version of each. I am still getting used to it, but I can’t believe how much better Final Cut Pro is over Adobe Premier Pro. I’ll have to look into the dust situation and come up with a filter like you made. I did see some Mac Mini docks in here the computer sits on top of that will work with the Studio that has more ports and a built in SSD drive holder for extra storage.

A mistake I made was not buying the more expensive non reflective nano screen. I'm not sure why Apple sell the other reflective version at all.

Thanks for this video!! Dust is such a killer, and if you're gonna drop $2-3k on a mac studio, might as well keep it in good condition. Dust is something that you seldom think about when you're buying a new product. Gonna give this method a try! Also I LOL'd everytime you called Apple "Crapple". It's true.

I think the keyboard thing is a personal preference thing. At least the mouse charges very quickly - 2 minutes for 9 hours - if it ever runs out, then you only have to wait a couple moments to keep using. Then plonk it on charge overnight. On the other hand, Apple's aversions to dust filters is pure hubris.

The Apple fanboys won't even consider the dust a problem because they are constantly jumping to the latest and greatest. I have seen on Reddit forums the chatter about dust with Mac Studios and if you think about this machine as a 4 year workhorse and then move on the dust choking the fans and components won't be an issue. The is a lot of talk but very few examples of dust coating stuff. Mind you it's still very early days. In a years time we might see some Mac Studios that have been slaved and had the fans running hard. I do see reviewers speaking about the fans being noisy! I can't even hear them but I can feel warm air exiting the rear vent when I'm rendering a longer video. The speed of rendering a video Vs my old iMac is incredible. It's a really nice feel to the system. Just sad for me the keyboard is a backwards step and I had to add bits to it to get it to semi work for me.

I’m debating getting a Mac Studio and worried about this. But I’m wondering if there would be any issue having it sitting on its side, plus a filter like this (what do I search for - could I find it on Amazon?). Another option might be be to have the bottom elevated high enough above the table surface so that it doesn’t suck in surrounding dust. Like some sort of stand.
@petrzurek5713
@petrzurek5713 5 ай бұрын
Definitely, a stand with its own filter. But then still, with these high-performance machines, one should be able to do the maintenance himself/herself, like removing the cover and blowing the dust with air-pressure. This side of Apple design I do not like (guess they do it on purpose, so thar you buy new one sooner)

I should throw the new keyboard in the bin, it's rubbish in multiple ways. I don't understand why Apple drifted from the classic keys that had a responsive feel and took away the angle. I have never used a trackpad. Maybe I need to buy one.
@anetavolcano5496

'Ergonomic nightmares' describes it perfectly :). I thought it was just me... I use it because it came together but at first when I started using the keyboard I felt completely disconnected. The mouse... in a long run hurts your fingers like crazy. I got the trackpad because couldn't continue work due to strain, but still, you have to use 2 fingers for scrolling??? Why? Whose idea was it>? Those fingers get tired very quickly, and poor pinky hanging in there not doing anything gets tired too! So I use the mouse and trackpad interchangeably. Eh...
