Maca Plant Pirates in Peru (HBO)

A root called maca, said to boost sexual stamina, became a national craze in China in 2013. Farmers in Peru, where maca is grown, made huge sums of money for a few seasons, until one day the Chinese buyers disappeared.
Instead of buying from Peru, they were growing the root at home. But now Peru’s government is trying to stop them, using an obscure new law to catch the companies it says are committing acts of “biopiracy."
When fresh, maca looks like a small white, pink, or black turnip. True enthusiasts consume it in almost every way imaginable, but most people are familiar with it as a powdered supplement that supposedly improves fertility, energy, and sexual performance. Endemic to Peru’s highland region of Junín, it grows above 13,000 feet, and is one of very few plants that can thrive in such harsh, high-altitude conditions. Still, it was almost extinct until the '80s, when Quimica Suiza, a pharmaceutical company, and Peruvian universities began researching it for a range of medicinal uses.
The Chinese market took off three decades later. Between 2013 and 2014, China - seized with maca fever - saw demand increase by 1,100 percent. Farmers in Peru started getting offers from buyers at five or 10 times their normal prices.

Feel sorry for the Farmers in Peru but Plants belong to the whole world. If people in other countries want to grow a plant to help their people good luck to them. We've all got to share this planet's resources. And what if there was some disease that wiped out all the Maca in Peru the same way Potatoes were wiped out in Ireland many years ago? At least there would be backup's of Maca in other countries.

Ironically, potatoes are from the Andes regions, too, and not native to Ireland. A few varieties were brought back to Europe by explorers and were seen as a staple crop for the 'underclasses', and those were vulnerable to the algae-like organism that caused the potatoe famine.

I bought maca root from a Chinese herb store. So, I like the idea that China and many other countries are growing maca. There's no way that only Peru could supply such a high demand from the whole world. Also, Peru would try to sell the maca root as though it was gold; with high demand and low supply. Multiple countries producing maca should bring the price down, and is more affordable for the general public.

Other than the idiots here referencing the in-video explanation, it is rather moronic to have such policy, since no one technically created the maca. Although, a lot of these people are ironically the same individuals that despise protectionism (unless it benefits them). By their logic, all of South America, Africa, North America, Asia, and Australia/oceana should pay royalties to European countries since they did introduce many crops that are now common in said places into the new world.

How come vice doesn't emphasis the countries that is not signed up to the Nagoya protocol at 3:57. This includes America, Canada, Russia, Australia, New Zealand etc. so none of this apply to them either. China should just pull out this stupid protocol, like the US with the Paris Climate agreement

Bio-piracy? Nice try. The Chinese had no trouble duping the simple minded Peruvian maca farmers. Especially, when they were buying up everything at top price. That the Peruvians thought this would go on indefinitely, shows what easy prey they were to the wily, globally business savy Chinese.

i see nothing wrong with what the chinese did. shit *should* be localized. sure the indigenous people should profit from it, but others should be allowed to localize whatever it is they wish to localize.

Some people are missing the point and some clearly support the Chinese and their disgusting project. Ugh, yea capitalism is a fucking pain in the butt and even more when people with power abuse using things native to another country. Such damn disrespect, disgusting.
