Millions of animals dead, a disease devastating entire populations in multiple states, and no cure or treatment in sight: That’s the reality of white nose syndrome, a disease that has killed over 5 million bats in the U.S. in the past decade.

Little brown bats are actually making a major recovery for the first time right now in New England. They’re finally developing an immunity to the fungus. The ones out west and in the south are the ones being put to the test now.

We found a bat in our flower bed it was dead. Not sure why it was dead. This area of Texas has a lot of bats. Makes me feel bad for the bats. I hope we can help them which we also help us. Never pick up a dead or dying bat with bare hands. We probably should of contacted authorities about where to leave the bat for studies.

@@btw2217 they dont eat the fungus, the spore attach themselves to the bats while they hibernate and feed on the bat. The bat then is in constant stress all winter wasting its stored fat trying to fight off the infection, and if the bat survives the winter their immune system goes into over drive to try and stop the infection and starts destroying the infected wing tissue.

They said for every (1) year that this kills the bats it will take (100) years to get the population back to normal. So 1 = 100 then he said this has been happening for the past (10) years... So if every 1= 100 then 10 = 1000 .... Now you can feel smarter sweetheart 🤗
@ToxicityAssured
@ToxicityAssured 5 жыл бұрын
As a population increases in size, the growth rate increases. This obviously slows as the population reaches the carrying capacity. So, growth rates are not linear. Linear is "1 year = 100 years" and would, when graphed, make a rather steep straight line. Populations grow exponentially, well logarithmic, but the rate changes as the population changes in size. The guy knows this and I'm sure the 1/100 year thing is for people that have never heard of population ecology. Assuming bats were around carrying capacity and haven't lost too many, then the rate of increase will slow a lot as competition increases near the top of the carrying capacity curve.

@@missyann I took her statement to mean she did have some understanding of populations and that the simple explanation given in the video didn't seem like how populations change over time. European bats have some immunity against the fungus because those bats and the fungus evolved alongside one another over probably thousands of years. Jay Jiang You shouldn’t. There’s no good reason at all to hate them. You wouldn’t be alive if bats didn’t exist. Megabats pollinate for us, microbats eat mosquitoes for us. Their poop also makes it so we can eat fruit. They aren’t disgusting, and they are not pests. It’s not like they are demonic blood suckers out to get you.
