My office had about 7 $5,000 USD iMac Pros. It was painful to have to dispose of them because we switched our creative team to MacBook Pros and the iMacs could not be reused as displays without taking them apart. Even if it's uglier, buying discrete components makes much more sense in the long run, for nearly every type of consumer, than using an AIO. I know that after that experience, I will never endorse buying an all in one again, unless there's a very specific commercial use (think point of sale terminal or something consumers don't care about).

@aspensareprettyneat4002 Жыл бұрын
@@arturoehr this isn’t still the case, but the original reason they killed target display mode was because of the switch to the 5K panel. At the time, the hardware on a larger scale just wasn’t ready. DisplayPort could not handle 5K, so internally it was using two DisplayPort inputs and stitching it together to get a 5K image. Without some software magic and using two separate cables to connect to the iMac, target display mode just wasn’t possible at the time. Obviously display cables caught up and they could have done it with a single thunderbolt cable including PD charging for a MacBook for a nice one cable setup a few years now. But at least *originally* there was a legitimate reason for it.

The most expensive single piece of computing hardware I've ever purchased was a 27in iMac. It makes me sad that the current "all Apple" option is significantly more expensive than it needs to be. I prefer the reduction on cable mess that the iMac originally brought to my computer desk when I switched back in 2007. Over that time I had two iMacs, a 24" which is still running with another family and my most recent 27" (2013) which recently died. I had been holding out hoping for a new 27" iMac to appear but finally was forced to order a machine. I opted for the MacMini with the M2Pro and the Apple Studio Display. I agree with a lot of your thoughts here and decided that given I got nearly 10 years out of my last machine a bit of a splurge wasn't a major issue.

I use the 27 in Dell ultra sharp from last year with the IPS black display. It's pretty minimalist in design, has plenty of ports and even has software that lets me control the display settings within Mac OS. Only real issue I've had is the thunderbolt hub function occasionally. Not working properly though. I don't know if this is just the nature of port hubs and dongles.

I have the same probably. IMHO Dell makes better monitors than ASUS. In this one, you can adjust the USB-C priority to be high quality screen vs better USB-Hub bandwidth. I think you can try that out.

I've never been a big believer in the iMac, because of the screen-computer coupling. Laptops of course suffer from the same coupling, however, that coupling solves a problem (portability) that the iMac does not. I've had a 43" 4k display for use in my music studio now for several years, at least five. I've used it with two Mac minis, occasionally with a MacBook Pro, and now, with my Mac Studio. I'm actually looking for a second 4K monitor for it, so perhaps ASUS' sponsorship paid off ;-)

I still have my first 24" iMac which I purchased in 2007. I bought a 27" in 2014 and another 27" in 2017. I am very sad that Apple no longer offers 27" iMacs. I am not sure what I will do when the 2014 and 2017 are no longer useable. I prefer the all-in-one design vs. modular but, I may not have much choice when the time comes.

I think the iMac had its place but as soon as they removed target display mode it went downhill. Although the modular set up as nice as you only have to change out certain components as needed and then they can be regifted a new life. Both in upgrading the system and handing off old components to somebody else.

What I like about modular setups is when the sun is shining in though the massive glass panes of an (aquarium) office is that I can simply move or shade the CPU so that work can still be done instead of erecting a shaded canopy over the desk. I might have a very specific reason for disliking iMac's.

Honestly, between the iMac and the Mac Mini setup, I went for the Mini setup. I've been using something akin to what you've got on your desk (except mine is centered around an M1 Mini) for about a year and a half now and it's worked out great. I've been thinking of upgrading to the M2 Mini and I really like the idea of that add on you used with the M.2 drive and the front facing ports!

I am appreciative of your video on how to break affordably 😢 into the Apple desktop for 2023. Thanks for some ideas, but for me not having a 27” iMac is a letdown, for... When rumors of the M1 iMac came out I was excited. I thought, ‘Finally! I can upgrade my ancient 2013 27” iMac to a modern M1 CPU’. Well, it’s been quite a wait, still no affordable 5k option ever showed up from Apple. So, sadly in the meantime I’ve become a traitor to Apple and jumped ship for Linux Manjaro which has the software I need, without the Apple price hike. I think that something hard and heavy would have to land on my head before I would shell out thousands for a Mac.

And if the M2 is the same as the same M2 in the MacBook Air, the SSD speeds also will be way slower because of production issues, which is seen with the M2 MacBook Pros as well

Because my friend and her kids don't care that it can't render 4k videos or do 3d models super quickly when all they want is a home computer that lets them browse the web, text, and maybe make video calls. It's a relatively cheap desktop that can do all of that without issue, sits in a compact area, and is made by a reputable company.

I upgraded my 2014 iMac to the M2 Pro Mac Mini just recently. Ended up getting a Samsung 32" monitor (don't recall the model) that has a stand that clamps to the desk. I like it, esp. the M2 speed, but the monitor isn't as nice as the iMac's 5k. I want the glass front, shiny glass is crystal clear, anything else does reduce sharpness. The accessories you show are very cool, I'll have to get them. The modular setup does provide more options however, and what should have happened with the iMac is the ability to turn it into a monitor. That would be great, someone should develop a kit to convert them, can't be that hard! I do prefer the 5k monitor but I'm not willing to pay for the Apple Display (yet). 🙂

I thought Mac Address was more in-tune with MacOS than to suggest a 27” 4K display. 160-ish PPI is awful compared to either 100-ish PPI or 200-Ian PPI, given the way MacOS does integer scaling. You handwaved it away as something to “deal with” but it’s not that small of an issue.

Or you could spend 2 hours and around 100 dollars to use your old imac in target display mode. Step one is to upgrade via legacy patcher so you can get your iMac on Ventura, it's unsupported but works flawlessly, and you ven keep all your files. After that it's just plug and play basically.

For everyone that does have an older iMac, I just want to point out that you can use them as monitors, if you open them up and replace the old logic board with a displaycontroller. They are about 70-150, depending on your model, but still cheaper than getting a new equivalent monitor and once closed up agan, you can use it as the display for any Mac or PC :) Its not that hard of a conversion, anyone somewhat handy can do that.

At this point we've just come full circle to a tower desktop PC, which we already knew is better from an upgradability standpoint but we're back to messy cables, inconsistent looking peripherals and slight incompatibility between devices. Bottom line is this problem only exists because Apple wants to be apple and doesn't want to give users upgrade paths.

Let’s be real, how often do you upgrade single parts? I have an iMac 5k from 2017 I used my whole university and now for daily light tasks. I have a 2018 Mac mini with Radeon 580 eGPU, 2 monitors, MX master mouse and keyboard. This is consistent since I bought it in 2019. And regarding upgrade ability, I purchased my first gaming PC in 2014, did a GPU upgrade in 2019 and then a completely new build in 2021. Didn’t make sense to reuse any of the old parts (except for one SSD which is now a tertiary and just for fun in there). I love my iMac and would buy a 27 inch one again in a heartbeat.
