If the witches really put a nasty curse on Macbeth and were controlling his behaviour, then "foul would be foul". Yet, foul is fair, and fair is foul. It is possible to argue that the witches, the foul creatures, were fair and told Macbeth what he already knew: that he was ambitious and the thought of becoming a king was not alien to him. Banquo explains it that "...the instruments of darkness tell us truths, to win us with honest trifles...".This is a classic idea of how temptation works. People don't need to be bewitched to commit horrible crimes. How would you explain all the stabbings in the UK? Because of growing witchcraft in the country? :))) If we carry on with the motif of "foul is fair, and fair is foul", then we can see that Lady Macbeth, Macbeth's true love and a fair lady, is the one to tell him to kill the king. (Note that the witches only told him that he was going to become a king, but never incited him to "play false", and importantly, Macbeth himself decides to not kill Duncan, which is something a puppet cannot do). So a fair lady turns out to be the foul one. It is also important to say that if we start talking of curses that control human behaviour, than any meaningful discussion on free will, guilt and decision making goes out of the window. And that's why it is worth listening to the witches' boss, Hecate, who explains that the prophecies are only meant to deceive:"by the strength of their illusion shall draw him on to his confusion".
