All the best for Monday's exam. Remember: you know these texts backwards; you've revised your notes, watched the videos and, more importantly, you're hungry for success! Horrible Question bobs up? Don't panic! Keep calm and work smart. Theme of TIME (blurgh!) in 'An Inspector Calls'? Think how characters or relationships change over time. Theme of EVIL (yuk!) in 'Macbeth'? Think about Macbeth butchering Macduff's family even though Macbeth believes himself invincible. Think of Lady Macbeth calling on evil spirits to 'unsex' her. Don't want to sound like your mum but get a good night's sleep and get stuck in tomorrow! Mr Taylor

This was a very useful video. Thank you. I have two separate English literature exams so I really need this help. I also never interpreted that idea of Banquo sitting on Macbeth's chair due to Macbeth's anxiety that is caused by "Banquos lineage" haha. Great analysis. Could you maybe give tips on how to use higher vocabulary on a daily basis so that you don't forget it. Especially for English literature I struggle using higher vocabulary when I write down answers because I keep forgetting them. Also it is hard to use higher vocabulary in exams when you're not allowed a thesaurus. Again great video!

Jacobean; patriarchal; regicide; anxieties. These'd be my Fab Four to try and weave into a response though of course you can get a sky-high mark without these terms.

I'm doing a video at the moment on gender in Macbeth but it does look at violence- in the context of violence on the battlefield being seen as a measure of masculinity. Such validating of brutality, though, effectively sows the seeds of Duncan's fate because he has conditioned Macbeth to see violence as a means to accrue status...

also, i am a bit confused. In the porter scene, how is the supernatural presented? as for my edexcel exam it will ask how is a certain theme presented and i'm confused on how to make the first point
@jalect1
@jalect1 6 жыл бұрын
Intelligent question. I’d argue that the porter scene engages with the theme of the supernatural because hell and the devil can be classed as supernatural ideas. The effect here is that it highlights the consequences of regicide for the Macbeths- they’ll be punished in the afterlife.

Okay, thankyou. (so just for reassurance ) could you say that in the porter scene, the supernatural is presented as demonic etc.... ? Sorry to basically just repeat what you just explained but i need to be sure!
@jalect1

Haha, I understand! Yes, what you just said, the demonic thing, would go down well with an examiner, I reckon! Regards, Mr Taylor

what is about the appearing deggar in act 2 scene 1? it is another extraordinary apperance to macbeth
@jalect1

Yup, you could talk about the dagger scene- the hallucination reflecting the mental anguish Macbeth suffers at the prospect of regicide

Thank you so much for your videos! I have a question about part a of the Macbeth section in the Edexcel paper. Do I need to refer to quotes from elsewhere in the play or is it ok for me to just make references to the extract given?
@nahdatahsin1586
@nahdatahsin1586 7 жыл бұрын
would the b question ever be regarding a character? e.g. How is the character of Macbeth presented through the play? Or, is it strictly thematic?
@jalect1
@jalect1 7 жыл бұрын
Good question: I seem to recall the wording of the question encourages you to focus on a close-reading of the extract. Personally, I'd save the contextual/thematic analysis for the part B question. But I can't see an examiner demonising you for the odd VERY BRIEF reference to events outside the extract that shore up you analysis of stuff within the extract...
@jalect1
@jalect1 7 жыл бұрын
My students' primary focus, their main revision endeavours will be on theme for the part B. However, they are advised to understand and identify where characters' natures or relationships reveal themselves in the play...
