Trust me, go out and spend the money on the best desoldering tool you can get. You will NEVER survive with just wick! At the very least get one of these self-heated solder pump, but get a 'gun' if you can, again, trust me, it makes life a LOT easier! Oh also, to solder thru hole components, get some blue-tack! But the component(s) in, add a blob of blue tack over it, turn the board and magic, components don't fall off 🙂 I have Kai's 20/20 board 1.5. I also have a 1.3 'wall art' failed prototype, I tried to help fund him as he worked on it. Amazing work :-)

Its true. A desoldering gun is a life saver. Makes working on large restoration projects much less frustrating and time consuming experience. I thought I was pretty fast and decent with wick and even a mechanical pump, and although I knew desoldering guns were great, i didn't really feel I needed to spend the money. Until I was doing some work in a friends lab and decided to try his system... My reaction was "are you kidding me?"

Actually, I do have a very high quality Japanese desoldering station. In my years of experience with it, there are many times it fails to do as good a job as a wick. I actually use a wick most of the time and hardly ever a pump. I also recently purchase a hot air station, and since the bad board isn't something I will need to be careful with, potential warping due to heat from the hot air station is less of an issue. Not only that, but Bruce Rayne inspired me to purchase a 20x20cm Hot Plate, which I saw at the end of a recent live stream of his. That thing looks amazing because you can sit an entire board on it, and after a bit most components are raised to 350°C and are able to be pulled out with a pair of pliers fairly easily -- at least, that is how Bruce showed it. So I am eager to give that a try. Boards you sit atop a hot plate run the risk of delimitation, but again, I am not trying to save the bad board because as you can see from the bubbly traces on the bottom, it's not worth saving, and that's why I am going about the SE Reloaded project in the first place.

@@JDW- I absolutely agree. Wick is better in many places than a de-solder iron and can do very clean and precise work. A gun's biggest advantage is speed. When removing and replacing several ISA slots on a 386 motherboard recently, i had to inject some fresh solder before the pump or wick could even touch it. So I just decided to 'assembly line' the process and then went along after with the gun. And then spend a bit of time with some wick after to clean up the rest. In this case I have no doubt it halved my time if not more. I also have a heat plate too, but have yet to actually use it. I have not found a situation yet where I felt it was needed, but much like the desoldering gun I may be surprised when I just sit down and use it on another project to try it out. Though I have used an oven to just make fast work of stripping parts off a PCB that was being junked. But that was before I bought the heat plate. But it can be safe to say we have many tools at our disposal to accommodate what each of us finds most comfortable to use with each situation. I do not think there is any particular right way if the end result is of high quality.

Just my 2c worth.. I've had a few bad experiences with desoldering guns on old boards.. namely C64 and older gear.. on those boards at least the guns were more likely to take a pad along with the solder. Since I started watched @JDW and Bruce's channels I've been converted to wick for most of my repair jobs now. Done right it's fast enough for me and from what I've experienced less likely to damage the board (of course still possible though if done poorly). That being said I've not thrown away my desoldering guns. Horses for courses etc...

@@pocketscience911 Yes indeed. I've spent more time cursing my high quality, brand named desoldering station than I can remember! It's never hot enough and never sucks strongly enough, and if you're not careful while rocking it back and forth over the pin & pad, you could degrade the integrity of the pad. It also gets clogged too often for my taste.

It also took a bit of work cutting 4 hours and 19 minutes down to fit a 49 minute video! :-) It could have just shown the soldering of an initial part and then cut out the rest, but that wouldn't be very thorough, so I just accelerated repetitive ports to slim down the time. I still have quite a bit more to do, which is why I expect to make at least another 2 videos in this series, with my Part II filming starting this week!

Well, I am going to start off by saying your doing it wrong. I (insert random unrelated event here) found it much easier to (inserting unrelated random solution here) to deal with (unrelated and random problem here). And if you did it exactly the way I do it then it (insert random and unrelated project here) pillows fluffed properly. Lol.. Just trying to do more than the normal comment of how good this video is. And it is really amazing to see all the different retro communities efforts to keep these machines alive. And the detailed breakdown of the process for the next person who wants to attempt this. Well done.

I suspect some will not "eye it" like I did when it comes to bending the ends with a pair of pliers. That's why I put a link in the text description to a little plastic gizmo that will aid you in bending leads. It may surprise you to know though, that in all the parts I installed in that video, I only had 3 which I bend the leads a tad too long or too short for the holes. The rest were spot on, even though I didn't use the tool. All said, it's proving to be a fun build, despite the fact I am spending time filming it. It would be even more for without all the filming work associated with it. The finished board will truly be a sight to behold!

@@JDW- Eh, it looked pretty good to me! My first paragraph was only to jab at the many comments in every tech video of people that know how to do everything better than the video maker lol. I honestly think with how many small parts there are on a fresh build like this, spending time to bend the leads with pliers would drive me a little crazy. I am contemplating this daunting task with my amiga2000. Mine is a very early revision board that has had about 2 dozen reworks done on it over the years, mostly by its original owner. And it has real issues with stability when I use the wrong combination of zorro cards and bus termination resistors. And it does not work at all with anything other than the socket 030 accelerator I have in it. It wont work with either 040 slot cpu board or the official 030 commodore card. And my 030 accelerator has no local fast ram, so its performance is limited by the ram on the zorro bus. Even though it has a 32k external processor cache. If you have ever seen an Amiga2000 board, I think they consist of some 470 parts...

Another great video! i love the tidbits you put in the front talking about the differences between the plus and SE. I've often wondered about the macs that have the same CPU and mhz. Another example is Quadra 610 and 700. It might seem a bit pedantic, but i find it interesting.
@JDW-
@JDW- 2 жыл бұрын
Because the word “pedantic” has a somewhat negative connotation associated with it, I think the word “meticulous” would be more appropriate. That’s how I describe myself most of the time too. We are both lovers of the details, and I think that’s a good thing!

Thank you for watching for your kind suggestion. I've already purchased a brand new replacement holder to match the stock holder, which of course will satisfy the purists who prefer the board to look as stock as possible. I even bought the top plastic part which secures the battery inside. But those who don't mind doing non-stock mods can of course add a button cell holder, and that would work just fine.

Kai Robinson decided to reverse engineer the SE and Classic boards because they’re quite commonly found in the auction marketplace and in a battery-bombed condition. I suppose he does have the technical know how to do other boards in the future, assuming he has time and desire, and most importantly, assuming there’s enough demand.
@ukmk3supra
@ukmk3supra Жыл бұрын
@@JDW- You're correct - the desire is there, but the time is not, now i've changed jobs and moved house - the real kicker is that sprint does not currently support 6-layer boards, which is required for much of the newer machines. Sprint have said support is coming 'soon' but they work at a glacial pace :/
