It took me a week, but I just finished the 4-part SE Reloaded mini-series. I don't have time to read all the comments, but is it just me or do others feel like James Wages is the Bob Ross of the retro-computing world? Yeah, he's missing the curly top, but these videos are really positive, calming, and down right Zen-like. Even when things don't go according to plan, it's just what was suppose to happen and it's all going to be okay. Life lesson in there, probably. To watch a blank canvas turn into a work of art with bright happy resistors and puffy little capacitors, is such a joy. (Of course puffy capacitors should probably be replaced, but you get my point.) Thank you very much.

Seeing the 16Mhz PDS SpeedCard install brings me back to my university days. I had a similar Macintosh SE FDHD with internal hard disk, and I used that little Mac for all of my course work. It had 4MB of RAM (with RAM Doubler) and at the stock speed, it was barely enough to write my papers on with Word 5.1. I spent some of my student loan money to buy a similar 16Mhz 68000 accelerator and it made such a difference, especially when scrolling pages & spell check!

Thanks for sharing your story. Yes, 8MHz is slow, even though the SE is said to be "faster" than the Mac Plus and earlier machines. Slow is slow, so even a 20% speed difference from something slow isn't saying much. The SpeedCard makes the machine more fund to use at times, but I am finding various incompatibilities and quirks. I am working with a former member of SuperMac to test various things, and he is going to provide me with a v1.7 beta INIT to test once he gets a FloppyEMU to do easy file transfer. With that said, I prefer to use the SE in its stock condition because it allows me to use the oldest software, just like a Mac Plus, and when booting into older versions of MacOS (pre System 6) the performance is quite acceptable. When I feel the need for speed, I can grab one of my SE/30 machines which are much faster even in the stock condition, but lightening fast when I add a 50MHz 030 or 40MHz 040 accelerator card to it. That's why having multiple vintage Macs makes the hobby more fun. 🙂

Fantastic video as always. My first computer was a Mac SE. I had a 20 Meg external Hyperdrive with 7.5.5 running. The Hyperdrive was bigger than a phone book. This was 1996 and even though my SE was a little dated even then, I still had more fun using that computer than probably any other. I used America Online ver 2.7 with a 2400 baud modem and had a blast discovering the online world. I even came across and purchased another Mac SE for $20 bucks a couple of years later that had a radius rocket 16mhz 020 68K accelerator card. I'm pretty sure it said Radius on the card, and it might have been a 20mhz 020 instead of 16mhz. It was 24 years ago. However, it definitely was a 68k upgrade for the SE. It also had some cache settings that you could change on screen during boot. About a year after getting my first SE, I then found a SE/30 for sale on AOL's classifieds and I was so happy to finally have a machine that was color quickdraw capable. I'm glad you showed the creators of the SE because you can tell when using these little computers that a lot of passion went into them and it carries over to the user experience in ways other machines don't. Right now, I have a SE (stock), SE/30 (128 Meg Ram, IIFX Rom, Os 8.1, Raster Ops 24 Bit card), Color Classic and a Color Classic II from Japan. The latter two needing restoration, but in fine condition. Your videos have been a huge motivating force in getting that ball rolling. Thank you for your content and I hope we can get in touch someday.
@JDW-

Wow, thank you for sharing your story! The SE is quite slow in its stock 8MHz configuration, and while the SpeedCard helps it go faster, I am finding various incompatibilities and quirks. So I prefer to think of the SE as a Mac 128K or 512K with more RAM, especially because the old ROMs in this SE allow be to boot even the oldest software, just like a Macintosh Plus, which is very nice. The newer FDHD SE machines could run System 6 minimum. The ideal Mac it terms of performance is the SE/30, of course, not simply because the stock speed is faster, but because there are so many upgrades out there for out (albeit expensive and hard to find at times). I will be working on my Stereo Mod for the Color Classic soon, so I hope that is a help to you as well.

When I was around 10 years old, my mother worked in a design studio and would sometimes bring home her Macintosh SE. I used to love reading the manuals that came with it, everything was so elegant and crisp. There was such a consistent design language across everything. I was absolutely fascinated by the icons, the system disks, exploring this whole new black and white universe of perfectly proportioned pixels. I even managed to figure out upgrading it from System 6 to System 7. At the time the main home computer we had was a C64, and later an Amiga. I was fortunate to then get a hand-me-down Macintosh IIcx which had an enormous 8MB of RAM, and would do my homework on Word 6. I recently was fortunate enough to get a SE/30 reloaded motherboard shipped to me by Kai, which was a lot of fun populating from a battery bombed SE/30 I got from eBay. Currently in the process of recapping the Analogue Board and PSU. Great video and loving all the accessories... need to get myself a floppy emu and external bluescsi :-) Thanks for making this!

Thank you, Fred.I must say, it was an exciting build. How often do you get to build your own working vintage Macintosh motherboard? And the best part is, the soldering is thru-hole, which means most people even semi-adept with a soldering iron can do it. I hope this video series will encourage others to give it a try one day.

I had never seen tech step before, maybe the dealer I worked for didn’t buy one! However I do remember Applecat! It was probably older and allowed you to connect 2 macs together to help diagnose problems! This was in the late 80’s! Great video! Also, just turning on and booting a Mac is a great test, but as any tech should know, you should always test ALL the inputs/outputs, interfaces, etc. to guarantee 100% functionality, and I’m glad you demonstrated how to do absolutely thorough testing!

My SE only has the one 800K internal floppy drive. The hard drive bay sits just above the floppy drive and is empty. But that's okay because I like to use BlueSCSI or MacSD instead. The SE can accommodate one internal SCSI (50pin HDD), and external 50pin SCSI drives, scanners, etc. It's not a fast Mac by any means, but if you use System 6 or lower on it, the speed is very acceptable and you can run the oldest software too -- software that the Mac 128K can use.

This has been a great series! It makes we want to see if its possible to build an SE from scratch. It almost seems possible! When I have tried to use 7.53 on my 68000 plus, when I had a full install and all extensions enabled with 1 or 2 other small ones thrown in, it would use 2.8 of the 4mb of ram...... ouch.

Good video! But isn't it also possible to just put a piece of thin metal wire directly between the pins on the connector to test it?
@JDW-
@JDW- 2 жыл бұрын
I think "for most people" that's easier said than done when it comes to avoiding an accidental short circuit of pins you do not want to intentionally short together. The process of making the loopback connectors really was easier than I thought. It just takes a cable (which you can still buy today on Amazon), cutters, a razor blade knife, solder (although you might be able to get away with twisting them together) and some heat shrink tubing (also available as an Amazon kit). I've put relevant links in the text description. The other benefit to making the loopback connectors is that you can easy use them again on the same or other Macs in the future, whereas a wire trick would be fiddly and have to be redone on every machine you need it on.
