I'm sad that Macross will most likely never revisit the concept of *male* singer & rock band anymore, not because Macross 7 was bad (it is very popular in Japan, with Yoshiki still doing concerts for the songs from the show). It's because the Macross franchise right now is balls-deep into the female idols concept that they are too scared to stray from it.

When I was first watching Macross 7 in the mid-2000s, I ended up changing my display name on my work IM program to "I've heard the phrase 'Sa harujamaze Saturday night, chosai wa dodai?' so many times it's begun to lose all meaning"...

One of the things I always assumed, was that the creature encountered in Macross Zero was the missing Protodevlin from 7. If you go through the information from the Protoculture and compare it to the number of Protodevlin you see in the series (the number of bodies, remember some are two in one, and Geplnich is a whole other story) they're one short. It always annoyed me that the Sound Energy System never was seen again. even for just a single episode a series where someone pulls the info out of the database and tries it on the new threat. Frontier really should have tried it at least.

Macross 7 is where Macross became Macross, and it goes from being a military sci-fi featuring music to a military sci-fi ABOUT music. Plus and 7 were a fork in the road and for better or worse the whole series went down the road laid by 7. For better or worse, Macross 7 is the most Macross Macross to ever Macross. Only Delta really one-ups it in terms of tone and theme. That said, the low budget really does show

I couldnt finish 7. After seeing Sylvie go into a volcano for no apparent reason, being awaken by the power of song, seeing a protoculture represented as a dull godly silhouette instead of a real alien being (and that is killed within the episode), the whole of Basara and having the words “anima spiritia” drilled into my skull for many episodes, I gave up. Basara is meant to embody the rebellious spirit of rock, peace over war, the hero, etc etc. The biggest problems I have with him are 1) his absurd plot armor (like when a protodelvin beam destroyed a frigate like it was nothing but when it hits his fighter straight on its like a gentle push) and that he is nobody. He has no past. He doesnt grow or change in any way. Why would he? He is always correct about everything, always hitting enemies none of the soldiers can even grace, fixing every possible problem with music. He should do it since he embodies the music, but again, he is a nobody. How can he embody something if he is just a shell? He wasnt human from the start, thus he cant represent a human value. After the episode where they save Sylvie, I knew the show had no surprises left. The military rival of the love triangle would lose the fight he had been failing from the start, Basara would sing to the demons and fix everything, and all that has changed is that people respect his songs more. I also hate anima spiritia. It like The Force in Star Wars if The Force couldnt affect the real world, no telekinesis or mind control or anything. A mysterious energy that connects living beings and… thats it. They present it as Lynn Minmay’s secret superpower. Except at the end of the original series they make it very clear that it wasnt the case, that she didnt have some mystical ability. The true power came from the culture nurtured by humans, something other than war that has a purpose. They completely overturn that in 7, making it so song really has a mysterious power that can solve anything. Man has had his soul forcefully removed? Use spirit power. Unconscious mysterious alien that is protected by a forcefield? Spirit power of course. The aliens wants to suck your spirit power because they feed on emotions? You guessed it, use the spirit power, that, as we know, they are so horribly allergic to. It dumbs down everything. I was actually happy when I saw the episode where the characters save city 7 from plummeting into a star by docking the battleship and using it’s fold drive to escape since its a solution that has an actual thinking process behind it. In short, even tho I love the artstyle, the music and the designs (the design of the colony ship and the fighters blew me away from the start, I have to hate the show with passion, because they put a magical plank of wood at the head of it all, and it cannot be ignored since its the same plank in every episode getting the majority of the screen. I dont like Delta because idols arent for me and the villain team that clashes again and again with the heroes without conclusion is a cliched trope, but it does the right thing at separating the pilot from the songstress. If you fuse the two you cannot get the conflict of the alpha and the omega, war against emotion. The essence of Macross.

The music is underrated. I like the use of English in the Japanese songs. They could’ve cut out a few episodes at the beginning and in the middle. Also, RIP Noodleface Monster

The 7 is because the numbers is written with 2 straight strokes. Same way F are 3 straight strokes, and the ∆ of macross delta (the one in the logo) are 4 strokes. Or at least that's my theory right now.

Macross 7 can summed up in one sentence.. SAVE THE GALAXY WITH THE POWER OF ROCK!, if you dont like you dont like Macross. its very 90's TV anime its low budget and ran longer then it really needed too for reasons. almost ALL 90's broadcast anime is going to have the same issues

Well, I`m only started to watch Macross. I watched couple of Robotech episodes in the 90-ies, but being a little kid doesn`t understand much, apart from the cool transformer planes. Now, being over 30 years old maybe I`m a bit too late to enjoy it? I really liked original series, apart from WAY too much emphasis on Mingmay, songs, love and other non-relevant time fillers. I even skip scenes entirely in a late episodes, when I see that chinese face. I liked the concept of clash of a different cultures, cultural shock that barbaric Zentradie tuned into< when they experiencing earth culture, but there is WAY too much time spent on showing shows, songs, and Hikaru`s love doubts. Ant WAY to small time dedicated to Roy, Claudia, other interesting characters, and on a battles. And I like the original Valkyrie design. It`s very "earth", very believable. You can imagine that if humans need to made a transforming jetfighter - it`s probably gonna look like that. DYRL was good too, albeit very confusing plot for those who didn't watch the original series. And then I started to watch the other shows... Macross Plus was strange and boring. The idea of an original didn`t develops at all. We see incredibly unrealistic and stupid behavior of two supposedly profession military pilots, and one incredibly boring lady with incredibly boring songs. And a Valkyries started to looks like generic anime mecha. Then I watched Macross II. Every Tom, Dick and Harry are Valkyrie pilot now. And Valkyries is not rare state of the art elite fighter planes, but a trivial thing that even a news company have a plenty. More songs. More absolutely same enemies. Only now Zentraedi and Marduk have their own songs. The idea still didn`t develops a bit. And Valkyries are generic as well. And now I`m watching this... I think I must thank you, for saving my time from watching 7. It`s only sad for me, that from somewhat serious mecha - war - series, with interesting plot, more mature characters and believable, distinct looking Valkyries turned into generic anime circus... I better go and watch your review of the original.

To explain why they called it Macross 7? Well to understand they created many ships to travel and colonize planets that they made other ships that transform into Giant Robots same as Macross which is why they call it Macross 7 which is the 7th ship.

The trick with Basara is to not think of him as the main character but more of a feature of the story environment. He's an unchanging monolith that the other characters have to react to and grow around. Gamlin and Mylene are the real characters. Basara is a plot device.

Honestly, I started with Macross, searching for a gundam replacement as I had seen a lot of gundam already. I watched the original serie and ... seriously had a hard time, the protagonist is indecisive and not in a good way like in gundam more in a should I bang the chinese teen or the burnout adult office lady. Which made me dislike the character. I then watched Remember Love, which was better, less time lost in useless love intrigue. and then watched Macross 7 and it was a blast, loved the mecha designs, loved the song, loved the characters. Great show ! I then tried to watch another serie and could never get myself involved in it as it was always more idol oriented and less real mecha.

Macross 7 is the name of the ship being Battle 7 and City 7.

This series almost kill the franchise for me... But I held on... And Basara kinda grow on me... The craziness of nvr bringing a weapon to a war and forcing the enemy to listen to ur song is really out of the world. In the end I was like the antagonist of the show and song along with Basara... Especially the episode where they don't power to the dreamers.

I'm watching Macross7 and it's ok... if it had been 24 episodes instead of 40+. Though IMHO it gets better the further you go on in the series. Also Basara... god, what a terrible character. Everyone around him grows as a character but he stays as the childish selfish person he was in episode 1.
