I was a huge fan of Robotech back in the day, specifically the Macross saga. Years later when I got into anime proper thanks to Cartoon Network’s Toonami run of Dragon Ball Z, Outlaw Star, Tenchi Muyo, Gundam Wing, etc I learned why that was and now I despise Harmony Gold for not only butchering the Macross franchise in the US but for continuing to gatekeep it to the point that they are actively forcing content to be removed from localized game releases. I hope they eventually fold completely and the rights can go into the hands of somebody who respects the fans

They must have given Big West and Tatsunoko a bogus contract in English gibberish because the notion of having a lifetime exclusive rights to another company creation from another country is wild to me. Such things should always have an expiration date. Matter of fact. I remember when the game Tatsunoko vs Capcom first came out in Japan for arcades and the Wii (Japan), many people swore up and down the game would NEVER be localized next of too many various TV licensing rights So....I actually did some due diligence back then and called several of the so called companies that 'held' those licenses. Turns out the majority of them either expired or their contracts never extended to games anyway. And then later on surprise surprise, the game got localized. So the fact Big West and Tatsunoko allowed Harmony Gold to have that much power is crazy but I guess they were naive about Western shady business tactics back in the early 80's

@@jianchen3210 ALL of them? Sorry dude.....Gundam Memories on PSP was hot trash. I'd definitely sooner play Gundam Breaker 3, and Gundam Extreme VS on PS4 over that. Can't really say anything about Macross since we hadn't had a Macross game on console since 2013....

Harmony gold will never be good. The family that runs it just has to pass away and sell the business. They hate macross and are still obsessed with robotech

@@DigitalFulcrum that would be even more bad news. Anime like Summertime Render has been known to be kept in Disney+ jail; as in, despite Disney+ only has the rights to stream it in NA & AUS-NZ, Disney also doesn't want to relinquish the streaming rights to it in any other region.

@@DigitalFulcrum no. Harmony gold has never done anything with the license and they plan to keep it that way. Their end goal is to prevent macross shows from leaving japan. The company is owned by a family and they are batshit crazy if you ask me.

After spending a few hours with the game, I feel it's kinda repetitive despite the language barrier. The Super Famicom version is still the best one 😊😊😊

To be honest... Philosoma from PS-1 executed this "muilti-dimentional" thing better. Then they added Space Harrier elements, too... Big West... really disappointing.

Whoo! Philosoma players! I'd love a modern, true 3D remaster of it. Along with Einhander... (On a side-note: I played both JPN and US version of both games. The JPN versions are a bit more difficult. I think Philosoma halved your shield strength and Einhander had a slower arm swing for the Endymions compared to the US version. My go-to was the Endymion mk.II. Never got the Selene...)

Great game! I am looking forward to playing this at some point. I hope for a true next-gen Macross game in the future. It's hard to beat the PS2 and also the Sega Saturn Macross games.

For what it is, I like this game. On the other hand, I totally get the sentiment about wanting something more than this has to offer. Just give it time. I don’t know how much time! But surely something more grandiose will come in the future. Thanks for the comment! - Danny

The Switch is not region locked! You can play games from any region. This one is all in Japanese, though. Seeing as publishing duties are being handled by another company for the English version, the Japanese version will likely never get English. Thanks for the kind words, man! - Danny

I've been playing a ton of shooters on the Switch as of late and I was really looking forward to this one, but after spending some time with it I think it's just OK. Not a bad game, but when games like DoDonPachi DaiOuJou and Rolling Gunner are an option, this one isn't a necessary purchase.

Today I played for the first time: Macross 2036 - Turbo CD Chou Aniki /Super Big Brothers - Turbo CD Metamor Jupiter - Turbo CD Hyper Duel - Sega Saturn Macross - NES Macross 7 - GBC (the boss battles require you to dodge bullets while doing a rhythm mini game to fire back) Robotech: The Macross Saga - GBA Macross DYRL - PS1 Gundam - Saturn (this got a partial Eng fan translation)

The way they handle it is that all the original Macross related content is relegated to a free day one DLC for the Japanese region. So since you're playing on the Japanese region game, you have the free DLC, so of course while playing you had all the original Macross content. That's also why there's that filter option on the leaderboards for DLC status (which yours defaults to 'on' for the JP region). All non-JP region games will not have this DLC available, and so all of the content related to the original Macross will not be present.

Buyer reviews on Amazon Japan are... less than kind, to put it mildly. Many hoped for a proper Macross game like the one released on PS3 for the 30th anniversary back in 2014, and all they got is a severe case of blue balls.

Thanks for the review. The Steam version is pretty much the only option for me. Since I'm living outside Japan and Steam doesn't allowed cross-region purchase, I can't "officially" get the original Macross content. Don't you just love it when m************ lawyers and suits ruin the fun for everyone?

I was a little annoyed to be missing out on a new Macross game, because I expected something more like Armored Core. But this game is pretty basic looking. Very old-school. Fun for a quick blast, but not a must have.

I'd rather hope for porting PS3 (Macross 30) and PSVita (Delta Scramble) games into Steam, PS5, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch with english subtitle (of course japanese language can still be available)

The game is very repetitive. It’s okay if you go into it as a shoot them up. You also cant transform at will like older games. You’re set in a particular form in the levels. The balance between ships are off.

@@TheFamicast I remember being a kid in the early 90s and seeing the Robotech boxset at Sam Goody and also somehow a Macross plus Vhs which was super confusing lol.... It sounds like their entire livelyhood is sitting on those rights like its a stock or bond

Others have said this but there was some kind of bug with the Steam version so they delayed it. I’m not sure when it’ll be out. As for the English in that version, it won’t be coming until Red Art Games releases all versions in the West. That’s just listed as TBD right now unfortunately. - Danny

@@TheFamicast I'm more confident on what you've put out in the video; that Red Art Games have to repurpose the story while writing out SDF/DYRL characters (thanks Harmony Gold 🙄). Being somewhat of a software developer myself, bugs at this stage of development should be pretty quick to fix, like a month or two fast & they'd be confident putting a release date. Rewriting, reanimating, & replacing big chunks of the game though? That's gonna take a long while.

There’s one review on there (from Forbes) and I tend to agree with it. The backgrounds are incredibly busy and it can be difficult to gauge what’s actual enemy fire coming at you or just stuff in the background. - Danny

Multidimensional?! 2 is the multiple of 1. Its a 2D game... Chicken invader style not so bad but we want a decent game where can control every mecha the macross class ones too in 3D like on PSP. This is looks like a minigame inside in a normal game.

I'm not trying to defend their marketing strategy or anything, but "multi dimensional" in the sense that you play the game as a horizontal, vertical, and free range styles. It would have been cool to be able to change forms whenever you like, that's for sure! - Danny
