Euron, the antithesis of the song, order, and the character driven pov style of telling, as silence, chaos, being a non-pov plot driving character, while also being in the symbolic lineage of a storm god, a sea god, tree god, ice gods, trying to attain power over fire, and is possible a conduit for one of the previous, who is trying to attain apotheosis, failed or fulfilled is an awesome character. A great stream, it's cool to listen to the symbolic weave.

Victarion is like a Duncan the Tall of the Ironborn! They are both big, not so smart, and like to slam into people with their oak and iron shield. On the other hand, Dunk is a good harted pesant and Vic is a brutal murderer that is part of a royal family.

Great stream guys! LML and GWT are the Legolas and Gimli of ASOIAF symbolic analysis. Poppin symbols and parallels out of the text like heads off of uruks, all with hearty enthusiasm.

I loved this stream and all the other recent read-alongs, and this one got me thinking. With the apparent power that Euron is being set up to have, bringing down the moon and causing the long night, etc, he's hands down the most obscene character in the whole story. The Others are in the deep north doing something, but if we expect the same kind of complexity from the Others as George gives everyone else, what if the war that's building up there is the same as all the other wars before it in the story - power, ego, deep history, secret desires - but they're not evil, or more bloodthirsty than anyone else really. What if that means all these factions have to unite against the greatest threat of them all, Azor Ahai Reborn, Euron Greyjoy, and that kind of alliance has happened before.

Dagon has 3 meanings first it is one of the Iorn born leaders. Dagon is also the name of a Syrian father god, who is asciated with royal legitmacy. I also think that it is a name in the Lovecraft Mythos.

On the significance of the last man Victarian killed being a smith: I don’t think that’s anything to do with the astronomy/mythic symbolism. It’s Martin signaling to us as readers about the human cost, and the desperation of the Shield Islanders being invaded. It shows us: 1. The defenders are down to the last man-Quite literally. It’s significant that last man that Victarian kills is someone who, (in typical Westeros warfare), would be a non-combatant. It shows us that even “civilian-type” characters are fighting with the military in their last stand. 2. Double Emphasize that desperation! Because not only is a smith a non-combatant, a smith is a *valuable* non-combatant. GRRM has hammered this point into us over and over during the corse of the series. (Examples just off the top of my head: Gendry is spared by the Mountain’s Men specifically because he is a smith. Later on, Theon kills the smith at Winterfell, and *everyone* points out how shortsighted the murder was. Theon even agrees after he tries to have a new ‘Prince of Winterfell’ crown made and it turns out so badly that he’s embarrassed to wear it. Lastly, and *most relevant* to the chapter at hand, is the smith stationed at Castle Black. He joins the Battle at the Wall at a CRITICAL moment in the fight against the wildlings. Like in this moment, it’s a heroic last stand to prevent an invading force from breaching the wall. Yet his death is also still costing them in well into Jon’s ADWD chapters, due to the equipment and logistical issues that losing a smith entails). It also reinforces that the Ironborn are using short-term tactics, by showing who they prioritize taking prisoner. (Smith vs knight in terms of skill set), and ‘cause there’s something to be said when *Tywin and The Mountain* can be compared FAVORABLY to you… 😬. It’s GRRM’s hint to readers that the Ironborn don’t intend to hold the shield islands long-term. (Which is confirmed by Euron himself, after Martin released ‘The Forsaken’ chapter). This conquest is only a stepping stone in Euron’s long-term-and more esoteric over material-goals.

Also re: the boiling vinegar: he would DEFINITELY KNOW that’s what it was, lol, that smell is insanely powerful. (Source: ran pure white vinegar through a coffeemaker to clean it, apartment smelled like vinegar for two days.)

Theon and Victarion freakin suck! I know we’re not supposed to like Theon and then supposed to sympathize or pity him…but his chapters are kinda boring and he’s such a pushover, Vic is more entertaining but he’s dumb as a rock. His redeeming quality is…moqorro… that’s about it. Love that guy! Him going over the rail was a gut punch, not quite the level of Ned, Yarin, donal noy or nimble dick… well it was at least on par with ole dick…
