The Ukrainian-made Stuhna-P anti-tank missile system is proving an effective asset in the fight against Russian armor. Video shot by a Ukrainian soldier shows a strike on a Russian target. A commander compared the Stuhna-P with U.S.-made Javelin missiles, which reportedly cost three times more.

We, Ukrainians, will win, the occupiers will be expelled from our land, because the Russian army came to our aid, which means that the occupiers who have been waging war against the Ukrainian people for eight years will be destroyed, and the help of the West will not help the occupiers. Now the main thing is that Zelensky and other war criminals do not escape to the West to their masters, I hope the Russian special services will catch all of them and they will all stand trial. Ukraine was supposed to bleed and undermine the Russian economy on the instructions of the puppeteers, instead it drained and undermined the economy of the puppeteers.

Stugna-P is great, but it’s not a fire and forget weapon. The person behind the computer has to keep the laser pointed at the target. All that time the launching tripod has to stay in place and the soldiers have to stay there. Plus it is a direct hit, not from the top that the Javelin can do (which requires more electronics and makes them more expensive). But their bigger payload should be able to penetrate the side of a tank, or at least demobilize it by destroying the track. APCs have less protection than most tanks, which makes it a perfect weapon to destroy those. The Ukraine soldiers are doing one hell of a job, unstoppable.

it has 800mm penetration and a tandem warhead, I've seen it pop the turret off T80BVM, T72B3 and such even with Kontakt 5 several times from frontal hits to the turret while only costing 20k per missile vs around 80k minimum even for domestic purchases of Javelins. It also has longer range at around 5km, and the launcher itself is operated remotely (the operator isn't sticking their head out like with a TOW). Javelin has an advantage of in mobility for sure but I'd take 4 Stugnas over a Javelin any day, the rare instances where top-attack is particularly useful is going to be far less than simply having that extra few kilometers range.

@@vikingvalhalla7589 According to Wikipedia there are 2 modes. “Two firing modes are available: manual, and fire-and-forget. Fire-and-forget provides automatic control of the missile flight using a targeting laser beam.” This doesn’t make sense to me. It’s not fire-and-forget when you have to keep pointing a laser. My interpretation: -automatic, point and shoot and it will not adjust the place of impact when the target moves. It will hit the target at the point you aimed at when firing. Perfect for immobile objects, parked tanks and buildings with a clear line of sight. Staff can move away after firing. -manual, the rocket will hit where you point the laser at. That’s why you see the soldiers aim higher at the first part of the flight to avoid bushes etc and aim at the target when the rocket gets close to the target. Staff has to stay there during the flight. But I’m no expert at this.

It is a stationary weapon. Comparing it and it’s cost to portable systems like Javelin isn’t really appropriate. They serve a different purpose. Compare it to TOW, Milan, Konkurs and other semi-stationary ATGMs. The remote control feature obviously helps to protect the gunner from counter fire. Keep in mind that it was developed about 10 years ago, which is fairly new for military equipment. It is a decent weapon system, but just like TOW, Milan and the other ATGM systems, the launcher has to be carried around to be repositioned. 100+ kg isn’t exactly light weight. So, apples and oranges.
@andersjjensen
@andersjjensen Жыл бұрын
Combining the two (as he directly referenced) makes cost a valid consideration: "How can we turn the biggest amount of Russian tanks into pressure cookers for the least amount of money?". If you have both, you can chose both. And the closing clip was darn impressive: four tanks blowing their turrets into orbit within half a second. Being able to target up to six tanks simultaneously really come in handy if you're just sitting there waiting for them. However, if they catch you with your pants down and you need to react fast, grab a Javelin, NLAW or AT4.

To put things into perspective, a Russian tank has a crew of three with a commander, gunner, and driver. No loader, as it's automatic system. So, for 15 tanks to break through their lines you're talking about 45 soldiers within them. He says they were able to take 10 prisoners from those who were able to climb out of the burning remains of the tanks (most likely the drivers, given the design flaws of Russian armour), meaning that over three quarters (77%) of that particular tank column died this single engagement. That is a staggeringly high loss ratio no matter how you look at it, until you consider his later remarks that they soon after destroyed 10 tanks and a personnel carrier with no survivors (approximately another 40 Russian soldiers killed). The combat skills of the Ukrainians continue to astound, as do the tragic losses inflicted upon the ordinary Russian soldier for Putin's vanity and imperial ambition.

I get the impression they have small squads with a single vehicle literally ALL over the front line and in depth from there. At chokepoints and all along the approaches in depth from the frontlines to stop breakthroughs in their tracts. He mentions sometimes a week or a month they sit and wait for a target. Imagine thousands of these squads just all over the East and South. Just waiting to fuck a column up. It's smart and a good use of their available resources. Doesn't need to be regular army troops. Indeed. The Russian war machine is already crippled and they pose no threat to NATO. It will take the Russians at least a decade to rebuild and that is not counting the damage they will accrue from now on. The problem is that they still pose a serious threat to Ukraine due to their entrenchment strategy and their use of cheap artillery munitions, but an actual annexation of Ukraine is highly unlikely using conventional means.

To be fair, the American price is bloated due to their manufacturing cost being much higher, so that they cost 1/3 is not shocking at all. I suspect that if Ukraine had all the knowledge and production capability of the American military complex they would be able to create the Javelin at perhaps as low as half the price. But of course, no country has the type and expertise of their military complex except America so that is a tall order. Way to many factors come into building such a system and the size of the economy is obviously a main factor.

@@muhlenberg2608 it is but simultaneously cost-effectiveness is a thing, no? This thing has longer-range at 5km and rather than top-attack is just has a huge tandem warhead that can destroy pretty much any Russian tank frontally. I can have several stugnas for each Javelin, outranging the Javelin and not even needing to expose the operator to fire then it's the pretty obvious choice. Of course the higher mobility from the Javelin is good but honestly the top-attack is only really useful against heavily armored tanks which isn't even most targets and doesn't really justify the cost increase.

@@muhlenberg2608 the weapons system itself is remote, the operator doesn't expose themselves while painting the target unlike something like TOW or Javelin, usually sitting in their own trench away from the launcher itself. Stugna-P is wicked, the 152mm missile can punch through 1,100mm of RHA and take out any tank in the world. The 130mm version at 800mm pen can deal with any Russian tank.

It seems a little...odd I guess...to compare a Stugna to a Javelin. They are both AT weapons but they are both designed for very different jobs. The Javelin was designed to be easily man portable. So a team can carry a CLU and a bunch of extra missiles around and pack a lot of anti-tank punch on the go. The Stugna is basically Ukraine's domestically produced TOW missile. They have a bigger, more powerful missile but they need a big tripod base and launcher and computer that you have to carry around on a vehicle to move it from place to place. Or it has to be set up as a static emplacement where you wait for an enemy tank/vehicle to drive by. As a side note, I've been wondering for months now why we haven't sent any TOWs to Ukraine? I guess the thought is that 10,000 Javelins are a much better solution and the TOW isn't necessary? It just seems like there have been A LOT of Stugna videos released from the front lines and adding some TOWs to the mix would just help Ukraine out even more.

The way the aid works they don’t get unlimited weapons, they have to request and be granted and those requests come from the money approved by congress. Essentially if they asked for tows it would come at the expense of another weapon or ammo, less mk19 rounds or HIMARs rockets.
