A: unions are key B: use braided vinyl to affix your pump to the system itself (using a union to tie in so when you want to maintain your pump you just unscrew the union and out it comes). C: copper/metal is not advisable as it will corrode so some conduit ties would be better! D: piping diameter should be determined based on the overflow bulkhead size (and gph of said overflow if a HOB) and number of turns affecting head pressure, along with the tank turnover requirement to determine the size of the pump you choose, I have a dc pump that I enjoy but have an ac as a backup which I’ve been thankful for! I usually like your videos this one is the first I’ve ever felt unsure about, happy Reefing

I was happy with how it turned out. The only thing I would change is I would increase the size of the piping but I'm not sure how much of a difference it would make.

I have two overflows on my220 predrill am putting in a 40 gallon sump i got two holes in my overflows which two connect toghter like you did in viedo that long pipe across the back this is my first one thx you

Great video, plumbing always intimidates me so it is reassuring to see how it's done! I also painted a return pipe black in my tank with the same paint, no problem so far after 1.5 years.

@@InappropriateReefer I know this is an old video... but did you paint the fittings before gluing? I plumbed my tank but am reading online that painting before gluing will cause issues. I would like to avoid redoing all of the plumbing if possible LOL. Also love both of your content!

Hi, I’m getting an s1 and it’s 3/4 inch pipe out, I’m after fitting a 45 degree tee section, what size do you go for so it fits snug?

Could I paint he back of an aquarium on the inside with krylon fusion? The aquum I bought was painted a greyish color on back and I had plans to paint mine black. Only other option is to try to ge t they grey paint off somehow. Mine is plumbed like this but drilled and want to paint that part black as well. Wonder if it peels or chips eventually? Pieces could chip off and fish eat ect. I was speaking of the tank and I got such a super deal on it but cant handle that grey!

A very informative video! I have been thinking about getting a 260 gallon tank as my starter tank, have had little fish tanks before but nothing of this size. The most confusing part for me is fi ding out how to setup all the plumbing, filters , pump etc ... Do you have a link to a page where i can see all the parts you used etc?

Hi, nice setup, but my question is how you feel the amount of flow on the far side stand pipe, I'm in a process of building up, and I think that my plumbing will look more like yours. If I place a ball valve in the closest return to the pump. Did you think that I could dial the egual amount of flow on both sides??? Or it's not worthy?

+Compy Ginorio the far side is less for sure. At MACNA a lot of the professionals said they want only enough flow from the sump to the tank to keep the skimmer going. Currently I have my M1 dialed all the way down. Minimum return. That being said I wouldn't do anything different.

Mad Hatter's Reef cool, I was wondering why you didn't look to balance iqual amount of flow on both sides, but it makes sense. To make more flow inside the tank with power heads than from the return pump.

so no drilling? No overflow box either? I have 2 tanks. I bought a 36 gallon bowfront beause it was 100 bucks and loaded! Plumbed and skimmer, sump. ato. wavemakers, cobalt heater, current lights just crazy and my hubby was kind of stalling on drilling my big 72 bowfront., plus I figured small may be better when my frags are babies, so it dosnt look so bare then we will upgrade to my bigger one. Does this make sense or should i just flip the tank, maybe take some parts from it like heater and ato, and skimmer.. oh and a phosphate reactor to! The small bowfront has no over flow and one exit and one return. Is that safe and why do you need an overflow? SOmeone said gas exchange, that I should add an internal one. I get surface agitation creates oxygen but wouldnt the return make some flow and agitation on top? I notice this is how LFS have their tanks as well I have never had a sump type tank, just a 10 gallon with hob so all new to me.

Aquarist do know they sell black pvc for irrigation pipe that works just as well as your standard pvc?

Great video, just binge watched all your videos and subscribed :) Just one question on your plumbing, regardless of our best intentions there will always will a leak, overflow or some kind of accidental spill, are you not concerned about those copper clips and water making it's way onto them and into your sump somehow?

Not really. If anything, I'm more concerned about the spray painted return pipes I have in my display tank but I've done my research and have found many hobbyist who have used this with no impact. I'm not much of a worrier.

Hey, I'm building a 200gallon reef. transitioning from a 100g fish only system without sump. My question is that if my power were to go. the draining hole (which I believe is supposed to be at the lower part of the tank)would just drain the whole aquarium and overflow my sump since the return pump isn't working?

+Posittron yes you definitely want to use siphon breaks in your plumbing. If you watch the whole video, I go over that.

what kind of cement glue thats safe for fish? how many hours did you wait to cure the glue? thanks

didnt hang it...connected to return. set pump on egg crate. done. going to put black tubing on in and out of chiiler and return

You say that this uses DC current. What do you use to get your DC?

AC return pumps run on alternating or “AC” power while DC return pumps run on direct current or “DC” power. DC return pumps plug in with the use of a power brick much like a Lap top computer.A DC return pump gives you the option of variable speed control which means you can now control how much water flows out of the pump. Contract this feature with an AC powered pump is either on 100% or off.

Yes that is what he is trying to say. It has a DC converter (power brick).

Your video was entered into KZfaq back in 2016. Since then have you experienced any problems with your water quality by using the PVC cement? I had someone tell me that the regular PVC cement can cause leaching in the water over time (1 day - 1000000 days) depending on the amount that may come into contact with the water flow through the filtration system and of course, wipe out the inhabitants of your aquarium. I'm only speculating that if one was to accidentally carelessly drip some of the cement/glue directly into the aquarium then yes, it may but leaching over time? I don't think so!

i tried to hard plumb my red sea 350 it made it leak i hung the pvc with plastic hangers...

With something like a red sea setup flex pipe is probably a better option. Did you stay with the hard plumb job?

Had to do this last night on an established tank. Practically drained tank, scooted over a couple inches, removed old sump put in new one, added sand (was bare bottom), replumbed. Long night

This was great, It's really handy if you didn't want to drill anything. The only problem I'm having is I do want to drill my tank and I can't for the life of me choose a fitting to go where the hole I plan to drill. I feel like I'm going to spend way more money than I need.

WHY are you using 90 degree elbows when it's clear they restrict flow? I strongly recommend using 45's to open things up!
