Suwawako takes a look into the wonderful world of Madoka Magica Rebellion -- a land of WOAH, WIKES!, oh no.
It's a divisive film, at least that's what Reddit told me... but after watching it for the tenth anniversary in 2023, I learned a few things from the movie: Homura is cool, Homura is me, Homura has a complex psychology, and Homura is a strange fellow whose movie needs a bit of time to be understood.

Not that it particularly matters much at all in any capacity, but small correction from part of the opening section: The anime is in fact not actually an adaptation of the manga, with the manga actually coming out semi-concurrently/later. Both were actually in production around the same time, but the manga "finished" its behind-the-scenes production earlier, and thus it works off of an earlier script and scenario than the anime which continued its development and added or changed things along the way (although the story as a whole is still generally the same). Also, while not particularly necessary at all (I've not even read it myself despite wanting to for years, and I still understood Rebellion just fine), there is separately the Wraith Arc manga, which serves to bridge the gap between the epilogue scene of PMMM's final episode and the start of Rebellion, in the world following Madoka's sacrifice and subsequent vanishing from the memories of all but Homura.

Rebellion is a pretty good ending, it's just pretty misunderstood. Homura not only hated out of selfishness that her Madoka left existence, but it was far off from being a happy ending. Before all of Rebellion happened, Sayaka had died, meaning that it didn't change anything in practice. Outside of avoiding eternal suffering as witches, they would still all die off in about a year. By bringing Madoka back to reality, she essentially broke the rules and got control of Madoka's powers without the drawbacks of not existing. She brought Madoka, Sayaka and Nagisa back to life and apparently made them able to survive longer, as it's implied that Kyubey got to hold the burden of all of the curses and stopped being an emotionless creature. My guess is that the new movie will answer if Homura's choice was a good or a bad one. We don't know for certain, and leaving it without a concrete ending makes Rebellion better.

I forgot to mention, Homura also saved Madoka from being utilized as a tool by the Incubators. Idk, that doesn't look selfish in my eyes.

it is pretty selfish. Just cause you agree with her choices does not make it not selfish. This is another big difference between Madoka and Homura at the end. Madoka let Sayaka died because she wanted people to have free will when she couldve changed Sayaka's choice. While Homura is forcing the other girls to live their life she wants them to by rewriting their memories and making choices for them.

We don't know who is right until the next movie comes out. Houmra altered Sayaka's memories because she was against her plan, we don't know if that extends to making her lack free will

@@BARALover96 Honestly what you said about Madoka and Sayaka just is not true. Madoka says in ep 12 “The only way I could save you would be to make it like none of this has happened, which means that this future has to disappear as well. But I got the feeling that you didn't really want it to turn out like that.” This shows that if Madoka changed it to where Sayaka isn’t a magical girl, it means that the wish for Kyousuke to be healed would also disappear. Sayaka doesn’t want that and would rather have kept her wish for Kyousuke to be happy, even knowing that her making this wish and becoming a magical girl will lead her to her eventual demise and Madoka respects her decision . Also I do say eventual demise, cuz it was confirmed that in any timeline she contracted, she always becomes a witch.

In my opinion is nice they tackle the Kyube problem, because they would probably try to pull a fast one on Madoka, even if their experiment failed with Homura. And that happened because Homura spilled the beans and told them, apparently because she was going crazy when she was the only one who knew about Madoka, so the premise of the movie kinda makes sense. But her decision looks like a major bad understanding of Madoka's feelings about her godlike status. I would say Homura did an opsie, a big one. Which is why she has that face when Madoka almost transforms back.

i feel like a lot of ppl don’t take into consideration that part of the reason that homura did what she did at the end of rebellion was bc madoka wasn’t truly happy as god. she would grant every other single girl sacrifice and salvation except herself forever. not to mention, the kyuubey’s had planned to control goddess madoka and return the witch cycle back to the world, which is exactly what madoka wanted to prevent. this was kind of the only way for homura to get everything she wanted (madoka is alive and happy w her friends and family, the main girls including bebe are happy and alive again).

Nice work! There is so much to unpack in this movie but it’s so beautiful and important. The imagery is confusing to most people but it makes a lot of sense if you dig into it. Some people have brought up references to Faust, Freud, and the Nutcracker ballet in Rebellion. I’ve seen a lot of ideas regarding Homura’s mental state and there are so many ways you can interpret it. Personally I see Homura as someone who is suffering from PTSD and/or borderline personality disorder due to her obsession with Madoka. She ultimately needs therapy. I don’t think she is good or evil, but just someone who was trying to survive and protect what was precious to her. This movie helped me better understand myself as a person and Homura is one of my favorite characters of all time! I’d love to make an analysis video someday as well. I really can’t wait for the next movie. (:

I won't get into too much more on why I think Homura is so me publicly but I really do mean it when I say "she's so me" :3 (hint, it's in the weighted blanket segment) I love Homura's story now and I sympathize with her, maybe I would even cosplay her now hee hee

Great video! Madoka Rebellion to me is one of the most visually and musically anime films I have ever seen and I hold it near and dear to my heart, however, I can begrudgingly understand some people's own problems. Thank you for being one to make a rebellion video in 2024

Homura did nothing wrong 🐐🐐🐐 I liked the movie on my first watch a few years ago maybe cause I was edgier then but I think its her final and best attempt of self sacrifice after going back in time to save madoka hundreds of times with failure always waiting via walprugis.

I love Rebellion, genuinely my favorite anime movie and one of the best experience I had watching a movie. However, at a certain point, I wanted to understand why it was so devising for some, and I must say that I have come to understand and even agree to a certain point about why Rebellion could be seen as a bad sequel. I personally think that the youtuber clearandsweet has the "negative opinion" about Rebellion I agree the most with while still finding it to be my favorite anime movie. I personally think that someone will like Rebellion or not depending of how they decided to interpret the original anime. I think that Madoka magica, despite also having a clear message, also relies a lot on different level of lecture and personal interpretation that are all valide to a certain extent, but some of those interpretation and vision are not compatible with Rebellion because it goes against them. However, I also do think that Rebellion is an incomplete story. That starting a certain point in it's production, the idea of having a sequel emerged. After all, the script for the 4th movie has been done since 2014. So in my opinion, if Rebellion has "betrayed" some theme and reading of the original anime, it was voluntarily done for an eventual sequel.

Closest to an anime movie with a similarly divisive ending would be the final Rebuild of Evangelion. Mostly because of Shinji ending up with a character he hasn't shared a lot of screentime with. People are split on whether it makes sense given she appears to be an allegory for Miyazaki's wife, if she still could've used more screentime or just disliked her for not being Asuka/Rei/Kaworu.

Message of original Madoka series - sometimes you need to just let go and accept things. Producers of Madoka making yet another spinoff/continuation/AU that doesnt live up to original - "We will never let go"

Except the message is still the same, it's so easy to distinguish between the superficial fake fans and the actual analytical and insightful real fans. What Rebellion truly entails (which isn't an AU or spinoff, that's the notorious Magia Record): The ramifications of not letting go, the dichotomy of love and obsession and what the latter leads to

I personally 100% disagree on the "sometimes you just need to let go and accept things", the anime literally end with madoka refusing such a cruel system and destroys it, kinda the opposing of letting go and accepting things as they are. You can argue that it is part of Homura's character evolution, but it is far to be the most important message of the anime itself. If anything,"Don't forget, Always, somewhere, someone is fighting for you. As long as you remember her, you are not alone" is the message of the show and don't really fit with that idea of "letting go and accepting things"

I will admit: haven't seen the movie in years after my first and only viewing, but I still felt like I only hated the ending for the film, not because it "assassinated" Homura's character, but because I felt like it basically undid Madoka's Wish, meaning the cycle returned to what it was, except now only Homura knows what it means when the time comes for Madoka to face her. Like everything else I liked about this film, it's just I'm not a fan of how it ends. Nonetheless, kind of curious how the new movie will address the events of Rebellion - assuming they don't ignore it, because Rebellion was a pretty big moment. It'd be dumb to not factor it's continuity into the newest entry.
