@nitro_001newman24 жыл бұрын
Chris Noneyabiz I disagree! Interviews weren’t much different then as now. That’s just a terrible interviewer. You never stay on the same subject long unless it’s very revealing or interesting to the viewers. A dress rarely is. Also if the interviewee is uncomfortable with the subject, the interviewer should get off it.

But we’re so grateful now because it got Madonna talking about her always evolving looks. By then she had already gone through a few of them and it’s interesting to hear from Madonna herself how she felt like a Madonna imitator so she went in a completely different direction for her third album. Back then singers wouldn’t change their look from one album to the next but this wasn’t just anybody this was Madonna. Always a trend setter

It must be hard to interview Madonna, a beautiful, talented and very famous star when you are so obviously struggling with jealously or envy, she is not a Madonna fan, it's like she can't understand why Madonna is famous, she doesn't get her at all. Pathetic. Well done to Madge for keeping her well in place and holding her own.

A lot of people didn't "get" Madonna at that time. Interviewers speak to the middle American mainstream and represent that point of view
@irishcountrygirl782 жыл бұрын
@@ultravioletpisces3666 she was a worldwide star though, the interviewer might of been speaking to middle America, but to Europe she Could do no wrong and she was loved. Losing her mother at that age definitely marked her and shaped her, l have a daughter that age and we are very close, she plays dress up and she copies my make up, it would definitely leave a huge void if l was gone suddenly. These old interviews that we didn't see over here in Ireland give great insight into Madonnas personality and she always talked about her mother, even her perfume was inspired by how her mother used to smell (which l loved, but it got discontinued after a few short years 😒).

I was 11-years-old in 1987 and got up early before school to see this on the Today Show. This was the first glimpse I saw of Madonna's off-stage persona. @sashabertold37314 жыл бұрын
Peak of her fame? She had so many peaks? 1990 Vogue & Blonde Ambition Tour or might it be 1998 Ray Of Light? Or else....? But I remember in 86/87 she was as big as Michael Jackson and long beyond that time. Though that's totally subjective.

@@sashabertold3731 I think what he meant was this was the peak of her "Sean years/True Blue era". She married him right after the Virgin Tour. So this was the peak of her "True Blue" era as culminated with the Who's That Girl Tour. As a bit of useless info-- the original working title of "Who's That Girl" was "Slammer".. but with Sean Penn's run-ins with the law and his breaking parole, it looked like he would go to jail or as one reporter called it "the slammer".. and since James Foley (the director) was best friends with Sean and Madonna, they felt that the working title might just carry with it some bad association and had to change the title. The title did come from exchanges with Griffin Dunn, who would ask "Who IS that girl??" And that's how the title was changed.. :)

Nice?! Classy?! What interview were you watching? For the first ten or fifteen minutes Jane acts "nice" but only in a very transparent attempt to get Madonna to warm to her. Then she starts laying out a series of traps for Madonna and becomes increasingly frustrated as the interview progresses with the realization that Madonna is not falling for any of it. Towards the end of the interview Jane is at times rude, desperate, irrational and even slightly delusional. She almost appears mentally unwell. It's actually quite uncomfortable to watch Jane's maneuvers and tactics throughout this interview. She grossly misjudged Madonna by thinking she would be an easy person to manipulate. Madonna is uncharacteristically patient to calmly sit through such a ridiculous series of questions, backhanded comments and thinly veiled accusations. But she outsmarts Jane at every step, and really Madonna is the only thing that makes this interview worth watching. I have to laugh when Jane says "well, you're lucky!" towards the end, sounding defeated and barely even attempting to contain her jealousy and envy. It's like a scene straight out of Dynasty! lol. @helloskinny5105 жыл бұрын
I think the interviewer was very confused, because she probably thought herself: "I will interview a banal brainless pop singer, I will just talk about dresses and hair cuts". She didn't expect that Madonna was super smart and would talk about deep and serious issues. Maybe that's why the interviewer seemed akward and confused.

watching interviews like this shows how artists like Madonna and others paved the ways for everyone else. They kept being asked about things everyone takes for granted today when it comes to artists, like, for example, changing looks!
@Dennis505110 жыл бұрын
It is so hard to find interviews with Madonna where the topic revolves around her music, they so seldom focus on the music. They mostly ramble on about fashion and romantic life and whatever.....hardly ever about the MUSIC. I remember a Rolling Stone article once that was about 7 or 8 pages long, and not once in the article does it EVER mention that she is a recording artist, no discussion about her music.....not one word about it. One of the biggest music stars ever, and it was never talked about in a rather long story, just lots of discussion about whom she had dated, or her ever changing fashion style, or politico leanings. If you did not know anything at all about Madonna, the article would not let you know anything about her being a huge pop star.
@MARYANNE2695 жыл бұрын
Wow good comment! Madonna is all about the Music! You wouldn't get that from thus shamble if an interview. I'd wanna punch this interveuwer for being so ignorant and just nosey and trying to dig dirt.. ( I know that what they do) But yeah what about the Music.. I love Madonna's honesty alway 1 step ahead X Glad I see this x

I didn't realize Jane Pauley had such weak interview skills. I wonder how she was so famous in the 80's. Her follow-up questions are simply embarrassing.
@pandaexpressbb1310 жыл бұрын
This interviewer is the worst. Madonna handled herself like a champ tho. I would have wanted to excuse myself or tell her to piss off. Seriously, this Jane Pauley person must have been known as a "good interviewer" back then. I mean, I assume she must have been regarded as one of the better interviewers back then which is crazy!. Imagine what a crappy interviewer was in the 80's if this woman was reputable. All that aside, I love this interview from a historic perspective because some people don't realize what a huge cultural impact Madonna made from the very start of her career. She was was the originator of so many trends, not just in music but in fashion, social advocacy, art, - the list goes on and on. It's crazy how influential and how innovative she is. I think Madonna is one of the few musicians I have never lost interest in or got bored of. She's not gimmicky, never redundant, and always original. Love her! Thanks for posting!

Jane Pauley' idiotic questions and comments ruined this chance to show Madonna's talent when she was willing to be open and her art was so raw. Pauley is too caught up in her own ego, and bland whiteness, -- she has no understanding of Madonna's art, which helped only helped hip hop.

Yes, the interviewer was a bit over the top. But in my opinion she just should have chosen nicer words to ask the same questions. I don't see her as jealous or passive aggressive, she was curious as the rest of the world, but slightly unprofessional. As I understand everyone was mesmerised by Madonna's new look. It's only now that we know her as a chameleon and the Queen of reinvention. It was her first major change back then and I would be shocked, excited and a bit confused too (I couldn't believe she's the same person when I first started to have interest in her career lol). Because nobody has ever done this before Madge. It was risky, but very smart, captivating and fresh. She changed in every way: make up, hair, style, different album theme, manners, a new man in her life (Sean). She wasn't just a girl next door anymore. She became much more sophisticated But at the same time she's the same unique person, she just showed her different side which nobody had ever seen before publicly. So, I can partly justify an interviewer for sounding like a Byatch. Long live the Queen✌🏼

I think Jane Pauley was very flattering in her questioning style. I think it seems more awkward because its the full interview and not what is cut down for TV. I think Jane Pauley is looking for stuff that will be good in the edit for TV. I think its a very sweet interview. She seems genuinely impressed by Madonna. People need to understand that this information was not as well known as it is today.
