Carl, thank you so much for the ASIC work you are doing for the FPV industry. I am convinced that your Open Source strategy will be positively received as pilots understand the compatibility they gain by using HDZero ecosystem. I have started to convert all my analog FPV quad copters to HDZero and I love the HDZero locked-in feel and great graphics. Thank you!

The issue with new product and not a large initial market to sell, is that both hardware (chips and actual working circuit boards) as well as software (firmware and user interface application code) need to all be developed and evolve. This needs support of larger community and many innovators with expertise in different areas. Carl sees this, and knows how to make the require video encoder/decoder chips, but lack expertise and resources in other areas. Think his approach is smart, and it appears a group of followers in the FPV agree. This at a grassroots level is how something gets developed that addresses the needs of the community. In contrast DJI which has some great hardware and software engineers; with world class manufacturing facilities. DJI however lacks communication connections and openness with FPV pilots and is slow to respond to FPV community needs. Thank you Ian for organizing and conducting this interview with Carl. Also, thanks for all the effort to editing and providing context. This really helps to provide a level of transparency and context for the community to understand and learn what is happening with the technology and how the community can support such efforts.

i like the idea to release the interview in clip form too instead of going on just 1 full long video. you might consider interviewing the italian guy davide c... who had developed the open source blue fpv system or however it was called. I had seen him talking about his lessons learned from that story. He had done only 1 interview before with its blunty 2 years ago.

I think that going open source makes hd zero a smarter and more interesting project. If it allows to keep the chipset prices low it eventually will replace analog vtx's. My best hopes to hd zero. You deserve success! Please, sell lots of chipsets and keep improving!

I don’t understand the complaining about the open source aspect of HDZero and saying “it’s not open source because the chipset is proprietary”. I don’t hear anybody complain that Betaflight isn’t open source because the processors are not manufactured by Betaflight themselves and proprietary chips, or Linux users complaint that that’s not open source because motherboards have proprietary parts in. Sounds a little bit like someone (the main source of this “it’s not open source” argument) is either bitter, or was working on their own “open source” system and has been gazumped. As for margins, Jesus Christ back in the day we’d be happy with 8% on DVI equipment and 5% on repeat consumables, some people will never be happy.
@Daniel-xg8el2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely True!

Very good points, especially the analogy to using proprietary processors in almost every other projects that's considered open sourced.

When I heard that retailers were complaining about margins I was quite disgusted. If one retailer is willing to stick with MSRP, we as a community should all shop there. Those greedy dealers can suck it.
@etxfpv5982 жыл бұрын
In defense of the resellers, margins can be lower with higher volume of sales. With less sales, margin will need to be higher. But I agree with your sentiment. That's why getting the VRX's out is so important. 20% margins with 100k sales is a lot better than 20% at 5000 sales. :-)
@BogHopperFPV2 жыл бұрын
It costs a reseller to source, store, advertise, pack, ship and provide support- it’s not cheap, especially for low volume, new, relatively untested product lines - they are businesses not charities - if they don’t make profit their business folds and we lose competition in the market- that said I’ve recently bought into HDZERO instead of DJI and sourced products as cheaply as possible- but within UK where available

Can say one thing he's a very genuine chap and we need people like him in this hobby, Instead of resellers crying over money what this guy needs is help to grow what he's trying to create. Wish him well and hope he achieves his goal, For me i have to much invested in the DJI digital system to simply switch over, DJI are utter bellends when it comes to its customers and need to learn a thing or 2 from Carl. Maybe when the goggles hit the market I'll think about switching but paying silly money on 2 separate things is just crazy.
