When you got to the final point on the community, I honestly shed a tear. I was a Dwarf paladin on a role playing realm, I remember meeting a level 60 paladin outside Ironforge and I stopped to marvel at his Lightforged Armour. We talked for a while and when he mounted his epic lvl 60 steed, I remember the sense of awe I had at having been with that player and having them take time out of their day to talk to me. As he was leaving, he said to add me as a friend and when I made 60, he would help me get my epic mount. The paladin was true to his word, when I finally made 60 many months later, he returned with three other paladins and they fought with me to complete my epic mount quest, even donating gold to get me where I needed to be. It was a gaming experience I will never forget and one thing that made vanilla WoW so amazing. I look forward to giving some paladin I meet outside Ironforge the same help I was given, over a decade ago. See you in Azeroth folks!

Community is what it was, the content was so boring or hard that if you wher not happy to be social you where stupid today you dont care grouping is easy and solo play too, friends are a husle aktually...... i guess thats the only misdesign today (exept no talent trees) and stuff being too easy and having no uniqueness value
@trapsrus56115 жыл бұрын
@@hanskraut2018 agreed the community was good but the gameplay was boring for me same with the quests other parts of the game. I'm not a social bot like some others so back than I always had a hard time getting into dungeons or raids. I maxed my char from questions and killing stuff and it took forever. I hope the game does good and you can tell a lot of people are hyped for it, but it makes me wonder how many of these people actually played vanilla? Do they fully remember it all? Back in it's time it was awh inducing because the graphics design and combat they had. It was all advanced during it's time and pulled a lot of people from other games because of that. Like I said I hope the game does well but I do have my doubts. And I can see the community getting divided into 2 like runescape. Half the player base on one portion of the game the other half on the other portion of the game. That's just my theory though!!!

Vanilla/TBC gave me what I really wanted from a RPG-MMO. I quit around WotLK, took a break and tried again during Cataclysm only to quit again a few months afterwards. Point being, I haven't seriously touched an MMO since then, and not because of becoming older and having less time, because I spend almost as much time gaming today, but there are just not any MMOs that capture me. Too many QoL "improvements" shrinking the worlds and the experience. I tried ESO and have an account there, but I barely ever touch it these days. I probably played it for 1-1½ year on off, but WoW, there I was a regular for 6 years, reaching a /played of about 1½ years of time logged in.

That's how I feel about it too. WoW fucked over the entire genre with their "casual" (the game was already casual for an MMORPG) nonsense, because everyone else feels as if they have to copy it. I only played Wildstar after WoW, and all the same stuff that made me quit WoW was in that game. I maxed out without talking to a single person (LFG/LFR and easy, or at least soloable questing) and just quit in disappointment. Beatiful game with many cool features and fun as a solo experience. But no lasting allure at all because of these things.

I was reminded of the genuine love that I shared with my guildmates at the small RP server where we played as kids. Everything was so big and romantic back then. I don't know if I'll play WoW again. Likely not. The only thing I can do is wish you and the people committing to Vanilla to experience this strong sense of community again.

It's interesting how eating/drinking after fights is now seen as a time waster and inconvenience. me too i doubt ill raid past the mini ones like the spires, its just too time consuming for life, I would like to see them go to burning crusade as the class balance was much better than classic as well as the hybrid classes actually being able to hybrid like they intended. The changes are nice but theyve gone way overboard in recent years, but when you have 120 levels to catch up to in a 15+year old game the old way doesnt work for new players and alts for that matter, wrath was probably the best balnce in terms of casualizing the game minus the heroics as they were way to easy to outgear and were just stupid easy from the get go..

@@tylersmall634 I still maintain that it is possible we will get a Burning Crusade server at some point in the future if Classic remains popular long enough. I don't see them transitioning Classic into BC, but I can imagine them launching an independent server that is 3.3.5 (I think that's the last BC patch) authentic. I also imagine they will allow character copies from Classic to BC, but also with the ability to start at level 1 as well. But it all depends how many hours people are sinking into Classic. For that reason alone I am planning to dedicate one evening a week (maybe 2-3 hours) to Classic. My long-shot hope is to get a Wrath server as well, but that's pretty far off if it's even a possibility.

The number one spot for me is definitely the social aspect and the competition of the game. I played on a vanilla server for some time (October 2017 - June 2018), so quite recently. When I was level 10, I met some german guys who I made friends with. Even max level we still did stuff together, our warrior tank went on to lead the most successful weekly PUG group on the server, where all spots are usually given out via discord a day in advance. When I hit 60, I joined a guild that started getting into MC raiding and we did our first raids together. I quickly worked my way up to officer and eventually, after our guild master had some RL stuff to take care of, lead the guild for a month before having talks with another guild master about taking our raid core in to raid with them, since I didn't have the time or experience to be a good guild master. It worked out and we raided two more months with that guild before exam season came in and I had to make a hard stop with all things WoW to concentrate on learning. I had a resto Shamy with BWL gear and a Rogue with the best daggers till AQ. Another thing I loved was the 200 v 200 massive World boss battles between horde and alliance. The factions were trying to disrupt one another in their tries and there were always the PVP premade groups who were going for Grand marshal or High warlord and just focussed on AOE-bombing the entire group when everyone was stacked.

Back when the game had substance. I started playing in 2006, just before BC came out. Everything that was said in this video is the absolute truth, and much much more that most people these days wouldn't know/remember. The small skirmishes in The Barrens, lvl 19 and 29 twinks and begging maxed level friends to run me through deadmines and other dungeons over and over to get the gear, random raids against alliance in goldshire, getting camped by high levels and being at their mercy, etc. All annoying but insanely fun aspects that don't happen anymore. Great list. I love hearing about all these, both to hear your opinion and for nostalgia. Some random things I look forward to, in no particular order: - Class Quests while levering. You have to earn some of your more important skills. - Elemental resistances will matter again. They made for some interesting mechanics, and many times gave people a reason to explore lower level content to find resistance gear. Plus I just like the idea of it. - No transmog. While I love transmog in retail, there's no denying there's a certain charm in seeing people run around in mismatched rags. They made full armor sets look amazing, and you could guess a player's strength based on his outfit. If someone came at you with the Doomhammer it was intimidating. There's still some aspects of this in retail since you have to get a weapon or armor piece before you can use the appearance, but it feels diluted for a couple reasons. The amount of shiny armor has increased immensely, and one more reason... - Rares will be rares. Back then there were several weapons and armors you could recognize by look alone. Thunderfury was THE sword. Doomhammer was THE mace. And even the most casual of casuals usually knew what armor came from what raid. Nowadays there's still hard to obtain loot, but between the sheer amount of it and palette swaps for different difficulties it all blends together. - Professions. No flying will make grinding for mats much more difficult. There's always something useful to make. And due to the cost it's a tactical game deciding what to pick and learn. Professions were in a sweet spot were they felt rewarding, it felt fun doing them. Some recipes even required you to go to remote spots to craft mats. I'm admittedly not that knowledgeable about professions in retail, all I feel is that it's lost it's magic. I don't have the motivation anymore to train. - Race specific mount. While still true to some extent in retail, the amount of mounts has made it rare to see races stick to their own mounts. I dunno why, but there's something charming and world building by seeing all the night elves ride on sabers or taurens with their massive kodos. Seeing someone with a different mount was a big deal. - The old models. Seeing how I've almost lost all interest in pokémon since they upgraded from pixel graphics to 3d, this one is no surprise. The new models are nice, but they missed the mark on a lot of things. The old ones have far more varied faces, certain hairstyles like the night elf braids weren't bugged out, eyes didn't look like they could pop out of their sockets at any second, different faces actually had different expressions,certain hair colors that's practiclaly been replaced in retail... the list goes on and on. - Short view distance. Maybe a strange one, but one I find important nonetheless. Not being able to see the ends of the world makes the world feel a lot bigger. Teldrassil is a good example, in vanilla there's a deep pink fog that covers the entire place. Due to the increased view distance in retail, unless you turn it all the way down that fog is almost entirely gone. And even at lowest it doesn't come close to vanilla. - TOTEMS - BUFFS - MARK OF THE WILD AND THORNS. By god, I want my druid buffs back.

My list would be from what I remember when i played vanilla 10) connecting on a certain level with your character = had to to get to 60 and have a good idea on how to play 9) connecting with others = my family used to play and my father was a healer priest and I was a tank warrior. He healed me forever and leveled up. I had trusted him and him trust me 8) difficulty = warriors couldn't level fast or quickly they had to pull 2 or 3 (tank was 4) and have to stop and eat lol 7) community = hit that on the mark 6) memory = like you had to have someone who knew how to run uldum at the time and it was difficult if taken a wrong turn lol 5) story = how it was a long and grinding way to 60 but, still had an amazing story to involve you 4) excitement = "so, can I take on this elite? Alone? or need a group?" Those questions are what most of use 3) simplicity = how it was level and add a talent point to where ever the talent was needed 2) the involvement = how it felt like that if it wasn't for you making it that far it wouldn't have happened. 1) community = hit that on the nail

Great video. As someone who has played since I was 14 years old, to be 28 and being able to experience such a throw back to the pinnacle of gaming is truly exciting. Even after all the dungeons are explored, the raids conquered, and the factions exalted, Blizzard will have given us something back that is truly valuable.

People are amazingly good at only looking at the surface of so-called 'inconveniences'. "It's inconvenient to have to find groups in chat." "It's inconvenient to have to go back to the trainer to learn spells." Having to return to town on a regular basis is an excellent method of bringing in emergent gameplay, and breaking up the robotic questing non stop. For heaven's sake soon people will be arguing "Why should we actually have to fight mobs properly, instead of them dying in one hit." Oh wait, they DO do that. Gaming is dying; and gamers are killing it.

Inconvenience for the sake of inconvenience should never be lauded as something good since the only purpose of it is to be inconvenient for the sake of it... which is annoying. Let's take a look at another game to find some examples. Take ff14. They have a glamour plate system that lets you save up to 10 transmogs that you can switch between. the menu is in your character menu, but can only be changed when in on of the major cities. Why? It's not like I'm going to a city to go to an NPC, that then lets me change my plate. No, just need to be in the city to access a function that you already have on you. That's something that's inconvenient for the sake of it and just ends up being annoying because there is no valid reason for it to be like that. Now lets swing back over classic wow. Having played it myself, I can say that it was littered head to toe in just about every inconvenience imaginable. I really enjoyed it back when it came out, because it was a great game for its time, but I would never go back and play it. As a realist, I'm immune to rose-tinted, nostalgia goggles. Most of the people talking classic wow up will give up shortly after starting it because the reality of classic wow isn't going to match up with what they remember, due to said goggles.

the irony is that the sense of community comes from the difficulty. Back then, when I saw another player I was like "wow thank god someone else!" And they likely thought the same thing. Then it was likely they'd at least help you a little and give you a buff. Maybe they'd group with you for a couple of hard quests or a small non-instanced dungeon. These days, when you see another player, you're like "GET AWAY FROM MY MOBS! THOSE ARE MY XP AND ASSORTED DROPPED ITEMS!"

@Nerobyrne6 жыл бұрын
+Byron McCuan yeah but then you have to run after that person so they don't kill the enemies before you get there. Also it doesn't always work, not sure why. But the point is even with the new system you don't really gain anything from another person being there because the enemies really aren't that challenging. They don't die instantly anymore, but it's still not really dangerous outside of dungeons. In vanilla there was a good chance you'd group with random strangers, both to avoid kill stealing but also because it makes questing a LOT faster.

The community aspect is actually far bigger than just people you were forced to deal like professions and LFGing for groups. You had trade chat traders, PUG raids on enemy zones, crazy roleplayers saying crazy things, arguments between different people and subjects all the time, professional trolls, hardcore raiders showing off, whispering random mages for portals/water or just giving out buffs as you pass another player as your travelling by. All organised from the chat window, making it much more organic and social experience, it was in your face and not hidden away in a menu. Retail WoW is so quiet and lonely it makes me incredibly sad compared to what it once was, but knowing we might be getting that experience back again fills me with warm happiness. If I see you on my travels, I'll be sure to throw a buff your way.

It's really true about normal mob difficulty, as an enhancement shaman casting rockbiter weapon (only lasts 5min) costs a quarter of my mana and if I forget about it before entering combat I won't have enough mana to hold up in the fight same for lightning shield. If another mob comes across i'm screwed. Just two ordinary wolves are enough to end my poor orcs life.

I remember staying up all night in 9th grade clicking the refresh button every few on the Blizzard website to get a beta key. I played the beta until it closed and then bought the game the week it was released and then put in 65 days of playtime into my main over the next few years. As a high schooler, my parents completely disapproved of me playing video games, but living 30 minutes from my closest friend, it was a way to socialize outside of school. Everyone at my lunch table played WoW and so that became the daily topic of conversation and if you didn't play you would be completely left out. I had to play in complete secrecy and made monthly trips to the mall to buy subscription cards. It truly felt like I was doing drugs (World of Warcrack) even though I never smoked, drank or got in trouble at all in high school. I joined a random guild with some random people I met questing in the Stonetalon Mountains as a level 15 undead rogue and by the time I dinged 60 in Winterspring we had evolved into a full-fledged 40 man raiding guild. I farmed gold to get a badass purple undead horse epic mount, met a girl from Lousiana with whom I sexted and exchanged nudes (she is now married to a retired XFL player and has a kid), and remember the feeling of accomplishment when I finally managed to get 100% epic level gear. I PVP'd and raided Ony, Molten Core, and BWL and got to be pretty good for someone who still managed to play lacrosse and get decent grades as a high school student. It was tough because I was basically chronically sleep deprived (played till 1AM almost every night and got up at 6:15AM to walk my dog every day). When TBC was announced I was just finishing up with my junior year of high school. I remember hearing that all of the epics I had worked so hard to earn would be equivalent to the green items you could find as random mob drops in the starting zones. I decided to end on a high note and be more social / outgoing during senior year of high school so I quit cold turkey. Senior year I ended up dating my first real girlfriend and somehow managed to get in to one of the best universities in the country. Vanilla WoW was my life for a few years but I have ZERO regrets. It was a hell of a fun ride.

Younger players who are now older, with jobs and other responsibilities, would (I guess?) prefer the current 'arcade style' version of this game... But the things is... Older players had these same kind of responsibilities (and more!) when we started playing so... What gives? Anyway, I'm pretty sure there's a 'generational' thing going on here...

- Giving or receiving boosts from friends. It was fun to see how fast I could run my buddy through Zul'Farrak or whatever it was called. - Choices. It didn't matter that much, but stuff like picking if you wanted to be an Armorsmith, or Weaponsmith, and having to do a bunch of work to get the title. Often involving traveling around the world to find the ingredients. - The specialized perks of certain classes. Like if you were a Paladin or Warlock, you got the joy of receiving a free mount, wow. That was a big deal. You had to go through a bunch of quests to unlock them though, which just made it more epic. There weren't that many mounts back then so having a Dreadsteed or an epic Paladin mount was something to be proud of. - Twinking low level characters to extreme levels. I remember my rogue killing enemies as fast as he could run. - Unbalanced pants enchants (i think maybe that was BC), they had no level restrictions. - Running down to Booty Bay to fish, spending ages waiting for the elite bosses to respawn. - The whole hunting questline there. - Spending ages soloing those elite quests so you could brag about it later. - Dying over and over again in the crypts below Duskwood, having the mobs respawn so you got trapped.

I thought I'd mention an experience I had a couple of years ago. While in Orgimmar I saw some players riding mammoths, and I mounted up and joined them. They rode around town in a slow walk (mammoth parade :D ), then suddenly they headed for the exit. We continued to travel in a long line, still at walking pace, down to the Barrens. Then we headed to Ratchet, took the boat to Booty Bay, then continued that slow walk all the way to the entrance of Stormwind. It became all about the journey, and while not exactly exciting stuff, it's probably one of the more fondly remembered things I've done in the game. I bring this up because it feels like a good analogy for Classic. There's something about grouping up with local randoms to do things, and having that increased emphasis on appreciating the journey itself. In recent years, it just feels like I'm going through the motions. Instances are much quicker and easier now, but I feel so disconnected from it, and I almost never type anything in chat anymore. Pretty much my only motivation to do them now is to tick it off the list. Standing around spamming "LFM ___" in a city isn't exactly fun, but assembling that group, travelling to the location, then working through the instance together, it felt a lot more substantial and meaningful.

Absolutely. The Barrens chat was the way it was because players spent a large amount of time there leveling (10-25ish, which could take a week or more depending how much you play). On top of that, its easily the best 10-20 horde zone to level in, just drowning in quests, plus access to 2 dungeons (RFC and WC). It gets boring and lonely, so you turn to the general chat. Barrens chat got taken away once Cataclysm came out and you could clear the zone in a couple of hours.

I also miss how you had to finish one zone to move onto the next in order to be at the starting level for that zone. You learned more about the lore for that zone. Now, and it's mostly because of heirlooms, you do a few quests and you're all ready for the next zone. I do miss the old Scholomance dungeon, Sunken Temple, and the one with the earth elements that got split up into three dungeons for LFG. Started with an M. The old Scarlet Monastery was one of my favorites as well. I really don't miss the different spell ranks and the ridiculous amount of mana some spells took if that class used mana. I definitely don't miss hunters having mana, haha. I had a love-hate relationship with the hunter ammo bags since it took away from your bag spaces. However, there was a sense of immersion because you had to get ammo for your ranged weapon like irl. I love flying. I know it takes away from how large the world actually is, but it's just more convenient. 40 man raids were epic when you could get the people who knew what they were doing and stayed for the entire thing. However, as you said, it was time-consuming to get a 40 man set up. I miss the epic quests. I don't miss the old talent trees that much because everyone ended up with the same build anyways unless you were doing a hybrid character. Going back to the world, I had hoped Blizzard would have updated the world again with new quests in BFA. The world should reflect on the new state of affairs between the Alliance and Horde while you level. Maybe we could also see certain parts of the world healed or mended. I'll play Classic when it comes out for the nostalgia, but I think most of my time will be spent in modern WoW. Modern WoW is far from perfect, but neither was Vanilla with the issues it had like classes being unbalanced....I'm looking at you Vanilla rogues.

menjavlafitta healing/mana restoring/ increase a primary stat by 500 for 1 hour/ turn invisible like rogues/ be able to float off a cliff or over water/ increase primary stats even more but for a shorter time (30 secs), those are just a couple of things off the top of my head that help so much in raids/dungeons/bgs/wpvp/questing

Oh...my heart...the feels...this was a walk down memory lane I didn’t want but needed. I agree 100% about the community, we lost that social contract, the feeling that you were not just interacting with pixels on a screen but a real person. The group finder really killed a lot of that, I’ll run several dungeons all day long and not two words will be spoke , hell I have seen people kicked from the group for speaking.

I love your list, and your #1 was mine also. I started WoW in Closed Beta, and had many years of game time on my main, Abrams, a Dwarf Hunter. I played for 5-6 years, and when the guild fell apart, the game lost it's luster for me. But now I am back, some 8-9 years later, playing Horde with my nephew and it is satisfying again, although much, much different.

i started in mop as well, but during wod i was curious about vanilla. I started playing on nost and got to lvl 20 before it was shut down. I have to say i had a good time, i thought i was going to hate the lack of flight paths the most, but i ended up really liking that, it made the roads feel traveled.

I started at BC, ended at the end of wrath, skipped Cata, returned at the end of MoP. I can say that i loved the game. Even pandaria. But i really miss the old things just as madseason said.

I remember being sad when the keyring disappeared. I had more keys than anyone I had ever encountered, and it really made me wonder how these people played and enjoyed the game just as much as me, without ever getting the keys to the dungeons they loved the most.
@benookand41415 жыл бұрын
What I like about vanilla is when you start a new character you are born in to the world as a normal citizen who has to gain reputation from the great Warriors and leaders of the faction, it makes the whole gameplay feel so awesome and way more rewarding. You have to start small before you gain the trust of the faction to go fight off both undeads and the legion. Instead in retail you are born as a hero with a destiny to save azeroth. Retail feels like such a mainstream mmorpg game. It used to be unique but now it's like every other mmo.

I always watch your videos on my 2nd monitor when I am playing wow, like just now I am doing dailys and watching these. When I am having a hard time falling a sleep I will watch some of your longer videos, fe. history of world of warcraft. Soothing music and monotone voice, stories of my favorite game just puts me gently in to sleep. Thank you for making these videos !

I was a resto druid who was lucky to get into a decent raiding guild so after certain point I always had kickass gear. Outside of raiding, I made it a mission to take lower level or less geared druids under my wing and help them with whatever it was they needed at that moment and even giving advise on what to do next and go and do it with them. I look forward to repeating this experience when Classic comes out in a couple of weeks. Although I won't have that much time to play anymore so maybe it I won't be so kickass this time hehe
