Generally speaking Visenya was not a great warrior, and Maegor was trained by a weapons master whose name I have forgotten but who was one of the best warriors of his time.

My guy.. Visenya was a great warrior. She was the one who created the King's Guard after she dre her blade on Aegon so quickly that his guards couldn't react. Trust me she was an absolute bad ass

Neither, he is neither. Enough of this Cavill obsession. His face is too chiseled and bland to be a beautiful Targaryen or a beastly one like Maegor. Henry Cavill would make a great Lord cast from the Reach or the Riverlands.

I don't think he was necessarily cruel, yea the things he did were extreme. But if you think about it, he fought for his family, and yes he took the throne after the death of Aenys. But Aegon son of Aenys, wasn't even twenty when his father died. However Maegor was a seasoned warrior and rode the Largest dragon in the world at the time. Its quite possible he did what he did, because he knew the Targaryen hold on the throne was tenuous at best. Yes they had the dragons, but after the reign of a king known as the weak, perhaps Maegor did what he felt was best.

Maegor was evil but it was a necessary evil to put the Faith in her place. I will never understand why he didn't decide to nip the root of the problem by going to Old Town and razing it to the ground and then massacring whatever was left to breathe (if he had done so many future problems would have been avoided) but luckily Euron will take care of it but I think it will be decidedly less forgiving than that.

I feel like that would cause a bigger headache for him to deal with. Idk exactly how established the faith was at the time but i have to assume pretty well established to be able to make maegor have to deal with it personally. Even if he burned oldtown down , there are still septons and septas scattered across Westeros that would raise the commonfolk into rebellion for it. Some septons would probably back out out of fear for their life but this is religion there's definitely gonna be plenty willing to attempt rebellion even in the face of a dragon (whether believing that the Seven is on their side therefore they cannot fail or just out of principle) and multitudes of commonfolk willing to fight (again devotion to religion and whatnot). He could still find and kill them all but so much time and effort would be needed. Also the chance an actual powerful lord would side with the faith and make it a bigger problem. They'd defintely lose of course against Maegor and dragons but still huge headache to deal with

Fear is the most powerful weapon that exists and if you manage to exploit it properly you can bend anyone to your will. If Maegor had destroyed Old Town he would have crushed the Faith at its core and would have sent the Septons into crisis and they would never have been able to organize an adequate defense to prepare to survive the flames of Balerion and I doubt that any lord or the people would have helped them because in the end they don't care about religion or laws or oaths but only about who has the power and Maegor had it, while Faith had nothing.

What really scares me is that when Jaehaerys concluded his training, Ser Elyas Scales says that Jaehaerys could defeat Maegor, but not be one os his own Kingsguards. And in Fire And Blood is stated that Jaehaerys first Seven Kingsguards are the best of all, so... if Maegor was one of the best, and Jaehaerys could defeat him, but not his own knights, all of that mens were so fucking good that it make Ser Arthur Dayne be a infant squire close to them
