Respect! A 7am start in Bourton was very wise, and your excellent footage of peace and tranquility bears witness to this wisdom. From about 10am, the place begins to crawl with tourists...among them occasionally us! (We're never up *that* early to benefit from a tourist-free village!) Loved your chat with the local gardener and impressed with your horticultural prowess, Ian. (There's another garden here in the Chilterns that would benefit from your weed extraction skills! 😁) Thank you for your gentle tour of Bourton-on-the-Water - really enjoyable.

What a lovely place, talk about beauty overload. And I love the model village's infinite regression, great idea. Now that's what I call attention to detail. And thanks for the tip. Get there about 6am, have a good wander around, brekkie as soon as the bakeries/cafe's open, then run before the hordes arrive. Unless of course everyone's now going to do this after watching your vid :) Maybe i'll try out of season, ha.

Yes, the time to visit is before 8am, for sure. The bakery opens around then, so you can get a well-deserved CROISSANT after you have had a lovely wander. By 10am the crowds invade. I wish I had captured footage of the bridges at 11am when I came back to film the model village! It was unreal. Out of season is a good idea too. It is gorgeous in the fall, and they have stunning Christmas decorations, including a big lighted Christmas tree in the river!!

I'm sure I've told you that I took my parents there when they were visiting us one winter. It was quiet, serene and there were spaces in cafes to enjoy an afternoon tea! @@MagentaOtterTravels It's certainly an impressive piece of real estate, not sure if you know the history of it, the Crown donated the land and a sum of money to build it as a reward for Winstons ancestor John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough. It was a reward for his victory at the battle of Blenheim. He was expected to pay rent for it, the rent was one French flag, due on the anniversary of the battle. apparently these flags are on display at Winsor Castle. It's the only non-royal residence in England to be called a palace.

Very commercialised. The beauty of living there on the edge of the Cotswolds was that I planned my whole life around weather conditions. If we woke up in the morning and saw that it was sunny and blue sky, we ran out the door and tried to get all over the Cotswolds and film as much as we could! I think the trick with visiting the Cotswolds is trying to get to the honey pot places early. Some of the more famous spots get very busy. I have always been a fan of serendipitous discoveries, just driving down a narrow road and finding a special spot not in the tourist guides.

Honestly, even though it's a beautiful village, during the busy season (summer) it's one of the last places I would visit in the Cotswolds. Many Cotswold towns like Broadway and Chipping Campden are overrun with tourists but none are quite like Bourton. By the time we left the crowds, traffic, and lack of parking (I was trying to find a new spot) were horrendous. I can't imagine living there during the summer. There are so many peaceful corners of the Cotswolds, places like Stanton, Miserden, Coln St Aldwyns, Eastleach, the Duntisbournes, etc. that see almost no tourists, even during the height of summer.

I remember one of our school teachers, a Rural Science teacher whose name, in fact, was Mr Potter. One day we were out on the school allotment ( this was in the 70`s ) and Stephen O and Mike R were asked to dig some weeds up in a certain area. 20 minutes later Mr Potter turned up and went beserk. The lads had raked up the cabbage seedlings. "But we thought they were weeds, Sir." Mr Potter bawled back, "Weeds don`t grow in straight lines, you imbiciles." A teacher, back then, could shout at a pupil and call them all manner of names. Followed by a smack on the back of the head.

@@dennisferrell3662 I have a few thoughts. First of all, late September is definitely much better than the height of summer! The school holidays are over not only in the UK but pretty much everywhere else. The one thing that is a bit different is that this year was the biggest travel year ever. So many places are suffering from overtourism. But I still think that you can visit a place like this successfully. Actually, staying in Bourton is the best way to see it. First of all, thanks so much! I really appreciate your support!! I'll be honest, I've not eaten chilli in England except for on jacket potatoes. I just looked up the recipe on BBC Good Food and it looks quite similar to the standard American chili. I think one difference is what it is served with. The BBC recipe mentioned rice. An American would probably never eat chili with rice. In Texas chili often has no beans, and lots of meat... not always mince, sometimes other beef like brisket! And Texas chili is SPICY!!! Too hot for me, LOL. Other American chili has not much (or no) meat and lots of beans. That is how I make it. We do serve it the Texas way with Fritos corn chips and cheese on top and sour cream. But the weirdest American chili is from Cincinnati Ohio. "Skyline Chili" as it's called has COCOA POWDER and CINNAMON in it... and is served on top of spaghetti noodles! Very weird stuff, haha!

Yes, I should have mentioned about how bad it is to feed bread to ducks! That man is clearly a Bourton institution and does that regularly. I’m surprised someone hasn’t stopped him! thanks for telling me about Brum. I assume the show was set in Birmingham?

@@MagentaOtterTravels yes it was. the narrator and voice of Brum was done by Toyah Wilcox, the 80's post punk singer. she also acted in a few British cult movies like Jubilee and Quadrophenia.

In addition to ducks, I hate to see people feeding seagulls and pigeons because towns and cities seem to be overwhelmed by them.

Just visited there this week …. Yes it’s a beautiful place but you can’t feed the ducks because of the seagulls !! There was a guy trying to throw bread out to the ducks but he was quickly surrounded by a flock of seagulls which were snatching the pieces of bread practically from his hands or while still in midair …. People were laughing and think that it’s funny … but the seagulls get very aggressive and the poor ducks don’t get a look in ….. the other thing that you didn’t mention is that they want £0.30p for a pee …. Absolutely scandalous ( the public convince has turnstiles installed) it’s supposed to be a public convenience ffs ……. It’s full of overpriced gift and antique shops and fast food type restaurants …. I don’t really rate the visit very highly and doubt if I’d bother to return ….. but I do recommend visiting the Cotswold whisky distillery ….. excellent experience with a very reasonably priced gift shop for your essential bottle of very good English whisky 🥃 …… cheers 🥂

Thanks so much for your comment! I'm thrilled to hear from a recent visitor! I agree with your assessment. We NEVER go to Bourton... as you can tell from the fact I visited 30 years ago and this was my first time back. We have so many other places in the Cotswolds we love more. But I felt like I HAD to do a video about Bourton just because it is so popular. I purposely started by showing this one FIRST so that then people will hopefully follow our future videos (shameless plug inviting you to subscribe! hee hee) and see that there are many nearby places which are equally lovely but less crowded and overly commercialised. Speaking of which... in Cornwall we felt that way about St Ives. Most popular place, but we prefer the less crowded touristy towns. And I just so happen to have a St Ives video that features a SEAGULL ATTACK... because as you mentioned in your comment, they are nasty varmints!!! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iJp-i6mF3tCqoXU.html

@@MagentaOtterTravels thanks for your return comment …. We stayed at the Snooty Fox Hotel in Tetbury for a few days this week …. Tetbury is a nice village with some beautiful buildings and a unique market building …. Very busy with traffic during the day but very quiet at night …. There’s a lot of antique shops and Prince Charles’s Highgrove shop. There’s an old disused railway line (the Tetbury Trail) which is brilliant for walking the dog 🐶 ( yes we took him with us … the Snooty Fox is a dog friendly hotel) …. We have a caravan at Trearddur Bay on Anglesey (North Wales) where we spend a lot of our time …. The surrounding areas are full of historical sites …. Castles,Slate mines and Quarries etc etc …. If you haven’t yet visited the area of North Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 then I can recommend it.

@@flyingfox7854 I absolutely adore Wales!❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 I fell in love with my two favorite castles in North Wales over 30 years ago. This year, we only visited South Wales. I have some fun videos that I will get around to editing eventually. So far the only thing I did was my “puffin curse“ video. Check that out if you haven’t seen it yet! It’s short and dramatic 😮. I have seen the Snooty Fox! Such a funny name! Thanks for sharing your insights about Tetbury❤️

It is ridiculous to have to spend 30 pence to "spend a penny". I agree that the place has been over-commercialised. I think there are better places to visit in the Cotswolds, especially during high season. Many of those places will be coming up in subsequent videos. One area of the Cotswolds we haven't explored well is the area south-east of Nailsworth. Westonbirt, Tetbury, and Rodmarton are all on my bucket list, especially the gardens and arboretum that surround Westonbirt.

Love it here - out of season!!! Same as you, first time we went was soooo busy!!! It’s so picturesque though. Good on you getting there so early! It’s a beauty of a place and so quintessential English!!! Chips and cream tea! Doesn’t get more British than that (bar your sausage roll!!!). Greats video Dara. 🍻
