This video is in so many ways unreal for me. I celebrate 100k subscribers which is roughly 100k more than I expected. And the items shown in the video are almost alien.
Thanks to all my subscribers for the support through the years and supermagnete.com for sponsoring the content of the video!

Chevrolet and Ferrari used to use a form of the ferro fluid in the suspension of their sports cars. They called it magneto-rheologic fluid - by applying a current (forming a magnetic field), the fluid would "harden" and thus make the suspension firmer. This allowed a softer setting for road use, or a hard setting for racing.

I used to work for a company that made Super Conducting Magnets for body scanners, MRI machines. The range was from 0.5T to 4T (4T was for America). I mention this as you referred that the magnets, here shown, are NOT shielded. We had to make Active Shielding Magnets, so people and machinery could safely move around the "shop floor". They were of course kept in pens with barriers. My favourite trick was to take a 3 feet dia aluminium ring and place into the "Ramped Up" magnet, and "fly it" on the tips of my fingers (not holding or grasping it) with the remaining 3 feet inside the magnets bore tube. The Eddy currents inside the tube were so strong that I could "fly it" (for about 3 mins) before gravity slowly put an end to this. Sometimes I would forget to leave my wallet in my desk drawer and enter the magnet!!! Ordering a new credit card (and the like) was common place, but well worth it to have the privilege of "playing" with these monsters. My apologise to other viewers, but I thought it might amuse you! Cheers.

Awesome! I like hearing about real-life experiences regarding truly strong magnets. What exactly does 'active shielding' do?
@thelamb288
@thelamb288 8 жыл бұрын
Big correction needed to previous statement! It is used to dampen the magnetic field of the coil, by using MORE coils! They are positioned around the main coil where the Static Magnet's Eddy Currents are greatest to dampen the feild, and to some extent "tune" it. The effect is to deflect the magnetic field away from the bore of the magnet (where the patient lies) and back towards the main coils. The lenght of superconducting wire on a 2T magnet is approx 110 - 120 miles (180 - 200 Km). The helium can is about 2/3 - 4/5ths full of liquid helium. It takes about 1 week pre cooling with liquid nitrogen (1000's of Gallons\Litres of it) before it is even ready to "see" liquid Helium for the first time!! It takes about 2 days of continuos filling with Helium before if starts to remain in the Cryostat in liquid form. Between the Cryostat and room teperature can is a vacuum which is pumped out to 2 to the minus 10. Emptier than outer space!! Another protection for the helium are blankets which filter Amstrong particicals down around the 5 amstong wave lenght. Just about anything you can think of is used to protect the Helium. Even the highest grade of stainless steel is porous to Helium!!! All the very best, Cheers.

Brainiac75 - I'm glad I was able to do that, all those years ago, because your videos are not only entertaining - they are also truly informative and educational. That's a good balance, which you maintain very well. Which is one of the many reasons why I like watching your videos so much. Some other reasons, they also show many interesting elemental and experimental oddities that nobody else has taken the time to post videos of, so far as I'm aware, except for you. Plus, you don't take it too seriously - which makes them fun to watch. :D So, Thank YOU for making these videos and I continue to appreciate watching them. Keep up the good work! You deserve to have more "KZfaq home page" recognition than you do already, and even more subscribers than you have at the moment. If you keep making these interesting and informative videos that show creative experimentation, and curiosity about the elemental world of the science behind said experimentation, then I expect your subscriber list to continue to grow larger. ;)

Good luck cleaning the dough off the magnets ;D By the way, is ferrofluid safe to touch?
@brainiac75
@brainiac75 8 жыл бұрын
Hehe, the dough is actually not that difficult to separate from the magnets. Sphere magnets are the worst to clean it off in my experience, but still rather easy. Ferrofluid is relative safe to touch. It's not toxic. It just stains like crazy... It can cause skin irritation though, so wear gloves anyway :) And don't get it in your eyes by rubbing your eyes after touching the fluid!

Congratulations on passing the 100K sub mark! You richly deserve it. I have 2- 25mmX13mm N-52 neodymium block magnets and they are definitely a challenge to combine and un-combine by hand but make great conversation pieces. The 6 inch cylinder magnet you have would be terrifying to bring near another of the same! Anyways, keep up the great work!

Thanks :) The force at close distance between two N52's is surely something that all should experience. Nothing like the ferrite magnets I grew up with.

Brainiac75 and now that a few days have passed, I have watched around 15 videos, and I love them. I got the idea to make a present from galium and a glass tube of some sort, maybe one of those used for chemistry. I could pour in some galium and then heat up the open end of the tube and close it essentialy. I think it would be a very cool gift. Especially for a very special someone that is into chemistry. The only thing that could be a problem is how would the galium react to heat and would it make the glass gray. My guess is that it would make it gray, and I didn't yet research what would happen if it got heated up. But that will have to wait a bit, because atm I am a student living with my parents and my parents don't exactly adore my "crazy" gift ideas. But I don't think they are crazy. It would make a wonderful gift.

Dimitrije Krstić The problem with gallium is, that it will stain untreated glass. Apparently glass can be treated with gallium oxide and the gallium will no longer stain the glass. A commercial sample with gallium in a glass ampoule is shown in one of my videos: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/balldLCB0t-VnoE.html Also be aware that the gallium can melt on a hot summerday and will expand when it solidifies again. This will crack the glass if the gallium is caught in a small cavity/crease inside the glass ampoule.

The spikes are not hard. Its a liquid you cant get cut by a liquid unless the liquid is being shot at you with extreme pressure. And you wouldnt have dyed your skin black. You wiuld have stained your skin but stains come off your skin.
