The scary thing is that Lawrence Trent can beat 98 - 99% of the worlds chess players, and Magnus just toyed with him.

There are very few GM’s less than 2000. Les than half a percent of chess players.

It’s more like 99.99 percent of all chess players, as GMs constitute a very very very tiny percentage of all chess players. Maybe 0.001%.

Eric Mortensen GM’s make up 0.3% of FIDE registered users, and FIDE is probably less than 1% of hobby level or higher chess players. (Let’s not count people who barely know how to move the pieces, less than 1% would be true but still way off)

@@GoldCurry22 I think its more than just toying. Just consider how it would feel to be so superior that even one of the greatest players to ever play the game, is just a joke to you. I think magnus is genuinely disappointed that he has no one to play with at any format. When he plays one of the "greats" they are so afraid of him they play for draws and take zero risks, and still lose. I'm suprised he has not stopped playing out of boredom. This channel with these banter sessions with Magnus got me playing chess again after about five years off (I got burnt out playing from age of 8 till 40 obsessively lol). Watching him in real time, hearing him break balls and also give new players credit on good moves, interesting ideas for development and lots of encouragement from time to time is nice. I’m used to GM/IM/FIDEs in videos being, well, assholes. Not everyone can be a 2500 and most of us just enjoy the game. Thnx Chess24 for rekindling my passion

My guess, as someone with shit knowledge, is that he didn't resign because he was about to be immediately crushed. Rather, L was behind a pawn, behind on positioning (including doubled pawns), and majorly behind on time. The variables were cut down to where there is little he could sneak out to one up the world champion in any area. He resigned because the match was effectively over, in M's favor.

He was down a pawn, his pawn structure was damaged, his major pieces (rooks) were stuck in terrible positions having to defend their respective pawns with no synergy between them and no actual way to cause threats, while Magnus' were connected and ready to attack every hanging piece. For a new players those factors may look not that important but in top level play a position like that is practically dead lost.
