I’m going to withhold judgement until the iPhone 13 comes out. It seems to me there are some secrets that Apple holds back on inside these devices they they later enable. It’s entirely possible that some of the current shortcomings of the Apple MagSafe battery pack will be remedied with the new phone release. I’d not, then I’m headed for an Anker wireless charger and maybe a new iPhone if they can pack in the mini led panel.

The Anker battery is perfectly acceptable and comfortable in use. It can be also be used as a daily charger for the iPhone and AirPods with the added advantage of a usb-c connection for recharging - the same as the iPad. It will also prop the iPhone 12 (mini) in landscape mode at a comfortable viewing angle.

so pretty much, if branding and a little extra weight and thickness doesn't bother you, you should go for the Anker as it provides more charge and is half the price. Only down side to me is that it takes longer to charge the actual power bank by 2 ish hours. But that is NOT a deal breaker and I will still go for the Anker power bank!

Quick questions: Does the Anker get super hot after charging for those 3 hours to get to the 87 percent? Did you also test that on an iPhone 12 Pro Max or just the 12? Also, how powerful is it connected to the phone if you're using a magsafe case from Apple? I have the silicone one so wasn't sure if I had to take it off for better efficiency or can I leave the case on and use the Anker? Thanks for the video - I just subscribed and hope you reach that goal by the end of the year!

Hey Max, I have been using the pack for a few days. A couple of findings I noted: 1) it stops charging at around 91%. So perhaps when u were gaming, it let the phones battery drop to 90% then only maintains the charge. Try it out again. 2) I found that if I charge my phones battery from dead, it’s very inefficient and can only charge about 60%. However, if my phone is at 90% and the battery pack is attached for the day, it maintains it for pretty much the whole day and almost giving me 2x the battery life in total.

Hey Max! I love your videos! I have the iPhone 12 pro max, and use it as a secondary camera on professional photo shoots. I will also import what I can into Lightroom on that device while on a gig. Frequently, the iPhone 12 would overheat if I used any charging method with 5G on, importing files, and uploading data. It seems the Apple MagSafe battery pack has solved that problem, and allows me to keep working instead of waiting for my phone to cool down. Awesome!

at 4:00, I'm with apple on this one, it's actually really smart. A battery is under a lot of pressure or stress at 90-100% and if it's kept at that for long periods of time the battery degrades far quicker than normal, so by allowing it to drain to 80-90 before providing a constant charge, the magsafe is making sure the iphone's battery won't be compromised. Either way you still get the same charge, your iphone is just at 90 instead of 100 when receiving the charge, so its purely beneficial

I got the Apple battery pack, I'm pleased with it so far, the first unit I bought was DOA, Apple sorted it quickly, performance wise it's been good, exactly what I'd expect, also the point he made about only charging to 90%, that's deliberate as a protection for the phone's internal battery, lithium cells do not like being at 100% for extended periods of time, it knackers them, fortunately Apple's battery pack automatically cuts off at this point, not sure about Anker, it probably doesn't considering it doesn't interface with iOS, not good long term.

There are definitely a lot of drawbacks, but if I need to charge both devices up, it'd be over night so speed is not as important. And usually my phone lasts me all day already, so 30% to 50% extra charge is more than enough. The non-Apple battery is in many ways better, but I do like the widget integration on the Magsafe charger so I think that's the one I'm going for. It's worse in many ways but since the drawbacks don't affect me in real world use, I'm going for it. Thank you again for the vid

After watching this, I'll still consider buying this simply because I get a magsafe puck included, which is $40 normally. Now the biggest benefit most people don't see (and this my not even apply to a lot of them) is that if you are charging your phone through this battery pack, you'll ALWAYS have a battery pack that's charged up and can take with you anywhere without actually caring to charge it up beforehand. I can't even count the number of times I woke up before my flight to realize I forgot to charge one of my power banks. I know the capacity is abysmal, but this will still be much better than something dead, and one should always carry a larger one anyway for anything else. As I see it there's no simple 1 does it all option right now, but the magsafe battery should be considered at least a 2 in 1.

I had been waiting for the MagSafe Battery Pack to be an improvement over Anker's, but it only seems to be better at showing info on the widget. I’ve heard this too, but what’s interesting is that my bro in law and I a couple year as ago bought the same Lenovo laptop at roughly the same time. I kept mine pretty much plugged in all the time to use it, and he only charged his and ran it completely off battery. 2 years later, my battery life was still several hours, and his was 15 minutes. Sure, that meant mine had less charge cycles, but it also kept the battery over 80% all the time.

I have both the Anker MagGo 622 and the Apple MagSafe battery pack. The Anker is heavier, bigger, and gets uncomfortably hot while in your pocket charging your phone. The Anker’s edge is also straighter so it also digs into your hand while holding it with the phone. It also doesn’t have the software integration, so the phone will still download updates while charging with the Anker, making the device even hotter. These type of wireless battery packs are mainly meant to be battery extenders, not chargers. It’s meant to be left on your device for extended periods of time to act as a second battery until you’re able to recharge. Since it’s attached to your device for extended periods of time, it needs to be comfortable to use. Having used both, I prefer the Apple MagSafe battery because it’s lighter and smaller and doesn’t get hot and the edge is more rounded so it’s much more comfortable to use, not to mention that it charges much faster than the Anker when plugged in, which is when it is used as a charger instead of a battery extender. That means the Apple MagSafe performs better than the Anker as both a battery extender as well as a battery charger so the higher price is justified.

Nice overall comparison. I hope you do compare apple battery pack with other competitors aswell to find the overall winner as anker’s one is ugly! I like to used the battery pack in the car so I can charge there and then and always available to me when needed in trip. Issue with apple’s battery pack is that it takes much longer to charge in car if you want quick boost. It’s like how much time I spent charging pack vs how much usage time I get from my phone after charge from that.

Being able to charge at at least 15W on-the-go with the Magsafe Pack would’ve been a huge deciding factor but nope, it can’t. Add to that the fact that it doesn’t charge your phone when doing heavy tasks while other 3rd party can. A lot of missed opportunities here. All that for $99. Doesn’t matter though since a lot of people would still buy it.

Even if he doesn’t recommend Apple’s charger, he still mentions plenty of reasons it’s designed better.. plus look at it vs Anker’s cheap plastic design… I agree Anker is probably the way to go but it’s clear why Apple isn’t charging $50 or less for this thing

I could just go with Anker's. Then again, using an external pack with the MagSafe Puck is probably the best idea, so who can say for sure? I have a handful of battery packs already, and should be able to find an adapter/cable for USB-C if I really have to do so.

I think people don’t realize that fast charging really isn’t good for your battery health over time. If you can get by charging your phone just at night then using Qi charging with the lower wattage bricks is better for your battery and won’t make a difference in the morning anyways. However, if you need a fast top up during the day then maybe the Anker would be better because it charges faster, bigger capacity and can be used with any standard USB charging device. I don’t see the advantage of Apple other than slimmer profile and slightly stronger magnets? Maybe I missed something though… this guy was throwing a lot of info and he talks really fast 🙄

This may be a dumb question but is there a difference for both packs when using for iPhone 13 pro since it says it was suited for iPhone 12. Idk if its because of when they came out but is that something i should take into account? Will It be slower charging since its a bigger battery and the watts are what they are. Hopefully i explained myself and my concern.

Screen dimming on gaming is not because of heat it is because of automatic brightness limiter(ABL) of the oled display for burn in prevention. This is why apple did not use oled display on ipad pro because it will trigger ABL and affects hdr and user experience on screen brightness while watching and gaming

Hey Max! Absolutely love the channel and the in depth stuff you do… it’s next level and unparalleled by any other youtubers I know of in this area. But I wanted to add some context to what I think you are missing about the MagSafe battery pack. This is meant to stay on your phone for the entire day, increasing the average user’s battery life substantially… not as a portable charger for a tech enthusiast! The reason it’s disappointing you (I think) is you are expecting it to do something it isn’t meant to do. It isn’t meant to be a fast wireless charger, or a thing that will keep you at 100% when you play games. It’s meant to elongate your battery life as you keep it on the phone continuously. “Fast charging” would decrease efficiency, making the battery pack worse for the average user. In the past with battery cases, apple didn’t make them fast chargers, because you aren’t expected to switch back and forth between cases. It’s more so meant to keep your phone from dying for an extended period of time. Anyways, when you run a gaming test, it might be more interesting if the phone had a lower battery percentage when you start gaming. That way the pack would probably turn on to preserve battery. Anyways love the stuff you do, keep up the good work and looking forward to the in depth review!

Interesting review, I might get one if I sell my phone for Apple credit, then I’ll get the Apple one free LOL… a better option than the Anker 3-in-1 Slider, it will include a battery pack in the phone dock / charging stand plus a watch and airpod charger. Pitaka has a similar product called Juice 2 but it is a 2-in-1 (Charger and Power Bank). I already got the Omoton Charging Stand which goes with the MagSafe charger but it’s still a great option instead of plugging in multiple devices all over the house
