A little update on the Skyhawk... Always plan for an overhaul to take about twice as long as you'd expect. Bob (our mechanic) has been working hard to get this engine overhaul completed, and the re-certified parts are just now getting shipped back to him. Hopefully more adventures in N80991 are coming soon!

There is some irony in the timing of this video as my 172M is in the Avionics Shop getting some modern radio gear and on Thursday, I took some dual in a 2008 Cirrus SR20 G3 to try it and get some flying in. This was my first exposure to “glass” panel PFD and MFDs and I found it to be a quantum leap beyond the “six pack” and legacy gauges in my 172. The engine monitoring page on the MFD was fantastic with all of that information displayed for you. As a CFI you’ll laugh at this. It was about half way through the flight before I figured out what the VSI was on the PFD. It was “oh...that’s what that is...”

I know how you feel, missing your airplane! I had a good running engine in my Cherokee (7828N), it still had about 700hrs left before reaching tbo, just started leaking a small amount of oil. It was during the run up and inspection after an oil change at the beginning of June that I discovered a crack(that was leaking oil) in the right case half that ran from the oil sump to where the #3 cylinder bolts on. I was so bummed out but better to find it on the ground that’s in the air! I sent it to PennYann to have the case half replaced, new cylinders installed and overhaul everything else. It took an incredibly long 8 weeks to get it back. I enjoy your content Josh, appreciate how organized and methodical you are when it comes to flying!

Looking at the shots for the engine from N80991 reminds me of the flat six engines in the Chevy Corvairs. I know it's not, but it looks pretty close. Cirrus is a nice airplane with all the latest gadgets, a flying Cadillac. But, after watching you guys and others fly the Cirrus, which is extremely nice, I would prefer a Mooney, Arrow, 172RG, etc., with good old steam gauges. I'm just ole' school and would prefer to fly the airplane myself. Thanks for the video.

Sometimes it can be worth just getting a new engine. U get the lastest parts made out of the latest materials as they are always improving. Also if they find a crack anywhere I’ve had friends pay out more than it would of they had gone straight to continental for a new Powerplant. Also less downtime as u just take it in once the engine has arrived, normally not more than a few days plus they test fly it for you & you get the added bonus of 0 hours n the warranties. You need to weigh up which option is best for you, call the manufacturers & the overhaul guys. Ask them how much could it cost if they find the worst. Or what are the common faults found n if so how much. Then make you’re choice.

Hi Josh, I enjoy your videos and the content. I took lessons in a Hughes 269 back in the early '60s but decided it would better if I kept my feet on the ground but I get my fix by watching videos like yours. Is there a break in period for the engine or do you just bolt it back in and it's all good? Thanks for posting and stay safe out there.

In my SR22 I prefer to climb in IAS not VS. Keeps the speed consistent and if climbing high and rate decreases you wont give up air speed and get the engine hot or get too slow. Descend in VS.
@w5cdt
@w5cdt 4 жыл бұрын
Seth Valentine - It was hard to hear the audio but I said and do the same thing. I start with a VS climb to clear obstacles and then transition to an IAS climb. If you listen carefully you can catch a snippet of me saying I switched the autopilot 500 ft/min climb near the ground and then to an IAS climb at 105 kias. 105 kias is a shallower climb than Vy which is ~96 kias in an SR20.

Another nice video. Question... how close to TBO did you get before deciding to overhaul or did that even factor into your decision? I know you mentioned you saw a trend in oil temps and pressures that made you decide to go forward. I'm thinking it may be time to get our Lycoming O-360 overhauled in our '77 Grumman. It's been a solid performer, but it has a lot of original hours on it. Iil consumption has been average... about 1 quart every 10 or more hours and compressions checked in the high 80's on all the cylinders except one, which was at 79 at the last annual in March. Anyway, again, great video. Love that Cirrus SR20!
