Dani Wootton gets the lowdown on an incredible 1400-year old detective story, concerning the major rediscovery of an early Anglo-Saxon saint and member of the Kentish royal family.
St Eanswythe was the grand-daughter of King Ethelbert of Kent and aunt of the two princes murdered at Eastry (featured in the Time Team episode S13E06). Local legend placed her mortal remains in the local church dedicated to her in Folkestone, Kent. Then, in the 1880s an ancient reliquary casket containing a pile of bones was discovered in a hidden alcove. Could they possibly belong to the early English princess and saint?
Dr Andrew Richardson (Canterbury Archaeological Trust) explains how modern scientific techniques - including carbon dating, isotope analysis and DNA analysis - are shedding light on the discovery, helping to settle the mystery once and for all.

Brilliant stuff. Love the way the whole process was described so succinctly, and clearly. Can imagine the Priory clergy secretly smiling while handing over a fancy box full of sheep bones to the "Reformation Wreckers" while hiding the real Saint Eanswythe's remains in the walls. wonder how many other Saint's remains are still waiting to be rediscovered. Keep up the great work Team!

Well, I thought, hmm, this is going to be interesting, but I'm really touched by her story. I teared up a little, thinking about her ossuary being preserved more or less intact, long enough for technology to be able to prove it most likely is who it's meant to be. That HAS been a feat of dedication and faithfulness on the part of the shrine's caretakers. For 1400+ years. It boggles the mind.

The fact that the reliquary survived all this time is amazing in itself. Hopefully they will be able to get a complete DNA workup. So many of those families were inter-related back then, having DNA to compare with other questionable remains could answer many more riddles. That the whole research process was done by local people, with the church's full cooperation and involvement, is a wonderful story. St. Eanswythe's must be ecstatic with the results.

Haven't heard about any DNA going on, if it is allowed, proscribed, etc. If the royal family of the time can be reconstructed we could at least be closer to seeing if this one was of the royal family, or possibly was male or female (I don't know as I do not know enough of what DNA can tell us). Great point, well presented, thanks!

Thank you Time Team for enlightening me of this important discovery. I'm in Australia and unfortunately didn't hear of this at the time. What a fantastic tale and a happy ending as so many of these stories aren't. I can imagine the far thinking monks of the monastery walling up her relic "just in case" and then taking the secret to their graves. They probably passed on the information by mouth, not writing, and the message was lost over time.

It might really had been the Saint´s skull. Such a piece would be qlso more prominent and better known as let say some orm or leg bone of hers. Still smart of the long gone folks more or less to hide those. But absolutly true in teh age of REFORMATION such pieces were often destoyed together with the complete church altears ( key word: ICONOCLASM ) for those who want another scientific look on things. In Germany also therr REICHSDEPUTATIONSHAUPTSCHLUSS from 1893 had let to the destruction of a lot of Church Property in the Rhine Bund in the Napoleonic Days. What did not seemed to be valuable on first glance became either destroyed or thrown away.

@@Dreymasmith IDK- they had teeth to radio carbon date, which would seem to indicate that there was at least part of her skull with those bones. However that could just have been the lower jaw that had fallen off. I wish they had made that point clear whether or not her bones had been found with the skull or not. Because it would not have been difficult to have found some other old skull, or just to hand over the skull during the Reformation, in order to safeguard the rest. But it certainly could not have been her complete skull that was lost or there would not have been any teeth to test.

@sandie157
@sandie157 3 жыл бұрын
@@twobluestripes Yes. The cathedral is the effectively the senior church of a diocese. It is the home church of the bishop and his own parish church. Catherdra= seat or throne in latin...The Cathedral church is the 'seat' of the bishop. The location where his authority stationed. His isignia are kept there. His saturna..a hat he wears ,which is a symbol of his office, that is different from the crown shaped one you may have seen hangs high above the altar. All the ordinary parish churches come under the administration of the cathedral ofices. Hope that helps a little. 😊

Cathedra is Latin for seat, and came to mean seat ofnpower. Ergo A cathedral is the seat of a bishops power. a parish church, under that seat, is the functional building used for daily and weekly worship. Made very confusing. By the fact that many cathedrals also function as parish churches.
