We experienced a storm in December that may qualify as the storm of the decade. With 1/3 of the province losing power and the department of transportation moving trees from roads with snow plows and loaders, the damage to our forest in Oak Mountain is considerable. We are using the Kubota 4060 Grand L tractor, the Kubota B2601 and the Kranman hydraulic timber trailer to start the clean up process.

I haven’t been on my wood lot in over a month- I’m sure I’ll have a ton of work to do! I wouldn’t feel too bad for that old spruce- it was at the very end of its life cycle. You did great to harvest the timber from it you did! Jeff

Thanks Jeff. That was my wind gauge! I watched him lean hard in many storms over the years….

I've heard a few people start to change their mindset around the affect these storms are having on their woods from one of loss, to simply change. The trees aren't actually wasted in the sense that the forest will always put it to use in a different way, and if we can at least make use of the best of it for our purpose as you've done here, hopefully the loss doesn't sting quite as much. Great clean-up, I'm sure there will be some good lumber in that one.

Thanks Craig, I agree. The only issue I have with storm damage is the rate of change. I can’t keep up! Take care, Jason.

Hey Jason. Sorry about your tree. The good thing is you can mill it and make something out of it for your property. Kenny

We are still feeling the effects of the hurricane Fiona in 2022 in Cape Breton. That storm weakened so many trees, and now every time we get a but of wind, more trees fall. You're doing all you can do in this situation - clean up and salvage what you can to extract some value. The rest becomes habitat for our wildlife friends in the forest.

I know it is the way things go but it is such a shame to see these big guys come down. You’re right, in this little stand there are at least 3 more that are ready to come down…

We have similar issues with the blow down from those storms. But there is no frost in the ground to really allow getting over some of the softer spots to try and recover as much as we can yet. We have just started flagging them and entry points on the trails to hope to find them as the ground freezes up.

That's about all you can do at this point. We are battling another inch of ice this morning. Most of the driveways and roads are like bottles...

Had a huge basswood tree hit our camp today. Heavy east winds which we rarely get. The ground is so saturated. By safe out there.

That’s too bad. The weather has been crazy. The ground is just getting frozen here now… but we are still getting rain mixed with snow!

The faces of the log ends should be nice clean consistent white wood from that big tree. I can tell there is rot especially in the butt log given the reddish rusty tinge to the wood. If you make lumber with it, it will be weak due to the decay in the wood cell structure. Once you open the logs up on the mill and they dry a bit you will clearly see the difference in the wood. Been having the same battle with big old growth spruce on my property. The log trailer did really well picking up the big logs! Hopefully you get some nice cants out of at least the upper logs.

Thanks. We hate to see the logs go to waste. We will usually try to make something out of them even if it is for small projects. The trailer never ceases to amaze me. It has been a great addition to the woodlot!

Jason that sounds like a strong straight wind storm good you can make use of the tree damage. Seems I always lose the beech. But that makes my firewood. Best we can use not go to waste 👍

Thanks Bob. There are so many softwood down, it is hard to know where to start. At the house I guess and work our way out! I should be cutting firewood though!

Same storm hit our woodlot and we have been busy like you trying to salvage..shame to see those big landmark spruce go down but at least we can get something out of them. Great video. Thanks

Hi Chris… I could cut every day out there between the storm and insect damage. Where are you sending softwood these days?

We had mostly fir uprooted and broken off about a meter up. It's slow going but nice conditions to work this fall if you can be flexible with the woodlot work days

To bad about the tree Jason. Fairly old tree. I was trying to count the rings but picture was not clear enough. I’ve still got trees uprooted from Fiona. Have a great Sunday. 👋👍🏻🪵🪓🔥🇨🇦

Hi Noel, I think Karen is going to count the rings on it to try to see how old it was. My guess is 50 but it could be older than that! Take care, Jason.
