Another Canadian KZfaqr, Slim Potatohead, made a small stove out of an ammo can to use in his A-Liner camper, has a way of packing the stovepipe and all into the ammo can, and he can use it for cooking too. The Lavvu looks great! Packaflame makes some nice ammo can stove kits by the looks of it, I built my own out of a $20 ammo can from princess auto and a couple pieces of 3” galvanized ducting... I’m sure I’m under $50 for it... the trade off with a small stove is I only get about 1 hour of heat (but it’ll cook you out of a Lavvu)... Dave’s bullets and bushcraft on YT has some nice video on DIY stoves he’s built from duct end caps he bought from Home Depot.. I’ll likely build one like he did and try it in my Lavvu against the ammo can stove.

Nicely done Michael !! A thought to add to the notion of building a smaller stove (which I could not agree more), and that would be to have it as a gravity/trickle feed pellet stove. Sure would be nice (in winter) to have heat all night long. A floor of reflectix, going high enough to block drafts as you sleep could also enhance the efficiency of a tiny stove. Nice work. Good to see both dogs out and about this time too.
@TheEmporiumOutdoors
@TheEmporiumOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
Hi RardogDRB - I've heard bout the pellet idea before but I'm not sure I want to lug the fuel with me 🤔 but it would be nice to have!! Once the shortfalls are in the tent will have lots more room and the snow skirt will seal it up well. WOW! you can just push the stakes in by hand. The ground in Az is so hard, you have to use a hammer, and then your stakes are ruined. I enjoy your camping trips.

Thanks Charles - Wow that's some hard ground. In the Boreal forest the ground is very soft - thousands of years of tree needles slowly composting to dirt 😀

It's just to stake down the tent close to the edge so there is less of a gap at the bottom. You could use longer tie outs! 👍

Have you ever thought of doing camping for foreigner/tourist package holidays? It will be cool. I believe people from countries that don't have winters would love to experience it. I'm from Singapore.

Hi Michael, love seeing you Simon and Esme out and having fun. Not sure if I mentioned it to you but I also have a Lavvu and mine is black. I have to say that mine has not been treated and does not let any water in. I put it up and left it in the rain for about 3 days. The outside just seemed to shed the water into droplets and then just ran off. Like you I am also in the process of doing the mods although at a lot slower pace (lol). My only real problem at the moment is getting the zips. I am not in Canada or the US and they don't seem to want to sell them to me. I need 2 @150cm's in black and wondered if you can find a way that I can get them please? Your friend Rach

Hi Rach - I've never seen a black Lavvu - that's cool! In the description I linked to the zippers I used (www.aliexpress.com/item/32952185552.html) they should ship anywhere and they are reasonably priced. I'd love to see a picture of the black Lavvu when its all completed!

Next question, what material would you recommend? I was looking for orange plastic type so it stands out if I need it to. I have also replaced the tie outs with orange webbing and for the side wall skirt i use orange para-cord. Easier to see in the dark and also from the air as of course you would know being in a country where they hunt.

I’ve always liked these “tents” ... but I do have a question. After all the modifications as it can no longer be used as a poncho and is purely a tent, are they still worth it? Seems the drawbacks of them as a tent are still there, but none of the poncho benefits. BTW What size did you buy? Re: Stove, I’ve seen a great mini stove build using two ikea stainless pans (top and bottom) ... perfect for a small one man winter tent setup. I’ll dig up the link if you like.
@TheEmporiumOutdoors

I know what you mean about them not being used as ponchos again afterwards. It reality they are not great ponchos - but I did make all the modifications to only one - So the other one is intact and can be used as a normal half shelter if needed. I'd like to see the Ikea pan stove - that sounds cool! I bought the medium size Lavvus.

@@TheEmporiumOutdoors He has one that has no welding. It works really well. I too, am doing the Polish Lavvu Pancho tent. The skirt, i am not sewing. I sewed flaps with buttons on them two inches, or so from the ends of the tent and will sew button holes on the skirts so that they will be modular. Am still waiting on the remaining used pancho to come in so that i can do the skirts. I will do a video to test it when i am done. Good mods on your tent. I will do the same for the door loops.
