An over view of the size 2 polish lavvu , Filmed in my private family woodland during my exercise, hopefully this may be a good insight if you are looking to buy a polish lavvu or have one that you have not used yet, you can buy them on eBay through many military mart suppliers. I find the size 2 are still at a reasonable price and are still available as unused stock as new.
i hope that this vlog my come in handy for anyone looking to buy one ....
Thanks for watching....

Top tip: Ball up a shemagh, or cloth and wrap it round the end of your home made tent pole. Even your trimmed edges will create substantial wear over time.

I was lucky enough to find a size III and then a SECOND size III, I love these things for the versatility. A ponch, a hooch, and with two halves, the full tent. My wife and I spent a couple nights in mine, plenty of space. And they do not need water proofing! The cotton swells if it gets wet, and the fabric tightens itself up becoming water proof. I spent a VERY rainy 3 day weekend in my untreated lavuu and was dry and toasty!

Your comment has gone under the radar but you are absolutely spot on. Doesn't need waterproofing at all. It also makes me want to vomit when people "mod" them.

Watching the video, I was inspired by your idea about staking and then putting in the pole. Instead of putting in all the stakes and then the pole, how about putting peg only in the back and then put in the pole. Holding onto the front, you can provide enough tension to put in the front stakes and then proceed around to get the rest.

Hello there, how blessed you are having a woodland to play in, I have to pay to camp in a field with the amateurs. You did say in your excellent vid that you'd leave a link to a man in Manchester who will do upgrades on the lavvu, let me have his details please as I'm dying to get mine sorted before winter. Great video, clearly explained and very useful, thank you, Mike.

Good video all in all. Personally I prefer to pack out the halves individually for versatility. I use my lavvu half as a poncho regularly during local storms and cold weather.. My day pack load ill take a half with cordage, pegs and no poles for a lean-to setup. My 3plus day solo load out I add the 2nd half and 2 telescopic tarp poles(3-8 feet) as trekking poles and tent bipod. With a partner she can take the 3rd and 4th poles for trekking and a quad pod setup. Additional mods I'm looking at is a separate tub with at least a 16 inch wall, a canvas baker insert, a removable stove jack for the arm hole, a camo net heat shade, and a bug net setup. Obviously not all pieces go every time depending on the season.

Hi great location lucky man , yet again another lavu demonstration how not to fit a lavu the correct way around , you have it inside out as many others do. There are double thickness shoulder flaps and water proof pocket flaps, it will be waterproof if you assembled it the CORRECT WAY .

I've owned a size 2 since before they became the next fad. It was too small but I've just managed to get hold of a size 3. It is an amazing shelter don't get me wrong, extremely versatile - It is not worth £200 and even £100 is absolutely pushing it. But as with all fads they will lower in price over time. Mine cost £30 many years ago. Never used.

Like the clarity and simplicity of your film, thank you. I have a Lavvu (size 2) and another which is a mis-match of size 1 and 2 halves. They both work fine but I use the complete size 2 as the tent and use the single size 2 half from the other, to build a porch area by slotting the peak over the top of the erected Lavvu and then positioning it so the chimney from my stove goes up through two sets of arm hole (tent and porch canopy lined up). I then use three lightweight telescopic poles on different heights to lift the canopy round and over the door to give much more living space fro grotty weather days. (Sounds far more complex than it is and you can easily cut poles on site to reduce what you take out with you). Simple paracord lines and some spare pegs (or cut pegs) and bingo! It looks great too as there is a lovely shape to the porch thanks to the curve of the poncho half canopy. That way I can sit under the open tent and canopy and stay dry or shaded depending on the conditions. I use a small pack-away chair so there is plenty of headroom and a low lightweight camp cot just fits in as well. (I have a bad back and rubbish knees so look after myself!) Not a back packing set up, but for vehicle camping with a wood burner, it makes a great little solo expedition set up and there is nothing like the sound of gentle rain on real canvas and the smell of wood smoke to relax you! One very simple mod requiring no faffing or sewing to make the door quick and easy to open and close is the purchase from Amazon, of some cheap stainless steel bulldog clips designed for clip boards. They are wide and have a decent spring in them. I use 5 of them to close the tent quickly. It pulls tight and is pretty much water proof if you line the flaps up carefully. In any emergency with the stove or just needing to pee in the night, I can get out fast and not worry about those tedious buttons! The extra canopy (which could be a tarp BTW) ensures no rain gets on the door area anyway. Like you, I am truly blessed in having some private woodland I have permission to use which has been a life saver during lock-down. One thing, I don't do any social media and certainly not Facebook, so how would I get in touch with the man in Manchester who does the mods?

It basically seems like the "Alice Pack of tents": It looks a bit shit at first glance, and fails a lot of metrics by which people will judge equipment these days, yet it is good, and it works well. Im a firm believer that 90% of survival is your actions. People can talk all day about a certain product being 17% lighter or 24% better at repelling water, but having a robust and practical tepee like this is basically 90% of your "dying from exposure problems" dealt with right there. Maybe I seem a bit flinty but I recently found myself in a situation where my comfortable trek degenerated into a potentially hypothermic scenario in the space of a few minutes. I now pack a polythene survival bag in my kit for emergency situations. Im sure MANY companies would like to sell me better more high tech jackets, underlayers and other expensive products, but the reality was that the experience made me realise that I needed a giant orange polythene bag to climb into if I fucked up, and at that point "condensation" aint no issue I need to be worried about. My point is that this tent is not perfect, but that 10% of "not perfect" aint going to kill you (Despite what the hipsters on tent channels will tell you) The 90% of goodness will work all the time. Great video and thank you. I can tell from your black kettle that you are the real deal.

Hi! Good video. Sligh note. In polish we don't have and use that word: lavvu ;-). We speak Polish for it: pałatka (read: p.a.w.a.t.k.a, better check the pronunciation of a word on translator) Lavvu.. is a Sami tent, a kind of tipi, lower tipi, more resistant to strong wind and this is a word from the Sami language (Scandinavian Lapland). Funny journey of words, verbal/naming mess. We (Polish people) made the military raincoat which is called "pałatka" (two are made into a tent), and there is a word for it in English: tipi, tepee but almost everyone calls it: "lavvu" - Sams tent. So the name "polish lavuu" give's U polish sams tipi/tent ;-)

Most home depot stores or DIY stores sell canvas water repellent in spray tin form or tin that you can put into a hand pump spray bottle 2 coats 1 coat let dry then a second.. alot of people just put it up in a rain storm the canvas absorbes the water which then swells the fabric do this twice and the fibres naturally become water tight allow it to dry right through to stop damp and mold spores. Also Amazon sell canvas waterproof spray's. Thanks for your comment.

your video only showes the lavvu being set up INSIDEOUT!! the flap you have on the inside is a rain cape. and it is suposed to be on the outside. you put the inside of your poncho faceing out, and the outside, faceing inside! would you turn your jacket insideout before you out it on? dont worry, 99% of youtubers set up their lavvu wrong, so your probably just following bad information. its an easy fix. but its similar to setting up the american poncho shelter with the hood hanging down on the inside.

Thank you for your comment.. so many people say so many different ways to set it up..I looked at old pics of the polish troops using them and the set up was the same as mine.. maybe they were all wrong also. Thank you .

@@Jez-explores-outdoors where did you find the photos? ive looked in the past, but never found any. i just went off of “if my poncho is wet, i wouldnt turn it insideout to sleep under it.” kinda thinking. but id love to see some old photos and learn somethin new.

What you are calling a rain cape is designed to go on the inside when worn as a poncho, not the outside. It creates a layer of material between the wearer and the outside of the poncho, as canvas will wick moisture through when it’s wet and being touched. You can also tell which is the outside by looking at the arm slits and how they are sewn and button up. Worn with the “cape” to the inside, water will sheet off the flaps covering the arm slits and not easily run into the poncho. With the “cape” to the outside, water can easily work its way inside. The same is true when the ponchos are connected to form a lavvu tent.

@@kennethdickinson2591 the main problem ive ever had with that explination (and i now understand that its a “pitch it as you please” kinda thing) is that its not designed to be set up that way. aside from the rain cape, if you look at the top of the lavvu, where everything is sewn together, where it makes a hood, its only made to be used one way. you can turn it inside out, but you get rid of the perfect pocket to hold the poles. and personaly, i think the designed pocket for the poles(in the hood) makes pitching it much easier, and i dont have the original poles! i just use an extendable hiking pole. but again, i have learned that most people like it (in my opnion, following history of clothing and looking at how it is warn as a poncho) to be insideout. poncho shelters are designed primarily to be warn as a poncho, and while wearing it, you can pitch it as a shelter so you stay dry if needed. its primary function is as a poncho, seccondary function is as a shelter. again, ive learned that it Is a free for all, for pitching it. so, if it works for you, great! it seems most people pitch it the same way.
