About a year ago I killed a PC Paladin with a Warlock ability Hurl Through Hell and he was failing his Death Saves. Finally his last try he got worried so took the deal and became a Oath of Conquest Paladin and got his own Holy Avenger out of it. Fun what a PC will do when offered the chance.

@@butong616 find a fiend, hag, jinn, or similar soul dealing entity offer your soul for something, agree on terms. and boom its done devils are the "safest" to do this with as they are forced to uphold the agreement while the others can just welch on their agreements at any time. you could use spells like sending contact other plane and various summoning spells to do this note not all pacts need to be for souls so you can for example cast summon lesser demons to summon a quazit then make a deal with that quazit for it to serve you as familiar in exchange for something

So I'm probably not going to be running this since my Waterdeep campaign is going to take me a good long while (assuming we don't burn out). But I think the parts of this module that include the devil deals and whatnot might be helpful for any Waterdeep DMs who're using the Cassalanters as a main villain.

1:34 This basically happened to my character 2 sessions ago. Except my character didn't just regain consciousness with one hit point. He temporarily took on the form of a pit fiend and laid waste to a demonically influenced gnoll army that basically had the party vastly outnumbered. Gotta say, that was a fun moment at the very least.

No joke the on;y thing that happened to my character in the tomb of annihilation was I lost a few weapons and my clothes. But even then I walked out with no less than three artifact weapons and some sick new armor made entirely out of bone and cloth.

In D&D once tricked a Devil by convincing them my soul belonged to a NPC Bar Maid in a town we visited years back in the Campaign. I wanted a free drink but didn't have enough coin, so I "sold my soul" to the NPC as a Persuasion Check. Got my drink, and apparently outsmarted a Devil in the process completely by accident. It was a written contract too, Two Party signatures and everything

"bad things can happen when you roll a one" I really hope they don't make a stupid critical fumble table a big part of the adventure. If that's the case, I'm playing a halfling.

Doubt it will be made a big part. It will likely be an optional rule and is probably a result of many people asking for a fumble table. Think of it like the optional rules in the DMG for travelling to planes like the feywild or shadowfell. For the record, I'm not among the people asking for that sort of table. I feel like all they ever do is discourage people from rolling dice unless they absolutely have to.

Ok I have a unique question for this. What if an ancestor already made a deal with another arch devil or a lord of the 9 hells in your name? Like making a deal with Zariel saying “give me and my bloodline some powers tied to you, and in death we shall march on the frontlines of the blood war” Would your soul already be spoken for?

Oh man. WotC taking a chance with this one. Sounds like a great module, but there are gonna be people who remember the satanic panic of the 80s. The fanatics who screamed back then that d&d is worship of the devil might crawl back out of the wood works. Hopefully we've enough change with society that we don't have to worry about it. I for one eagerly await the chance to terrorize my players with this campaign! >:D

I believe that's practically impossible to happen again... D&D has grown so much with things such as Critical role, millions of livestreams and podcasts, and of course Stranger Things that unless someone does summon a real devil there's no way the Satanic Panic could return :P

@@DragonEaterT This exactly. I remember a op-ed article written by a D&D editor years ago after the mother who organized B.A.D.D. (Bothered about D&D) passed away. He basically said that she made us come out of the dark and forced us into the eye of society at large...and that the community sort of owed her a debt of gratitude for that. She and the hysteria her organization created sort of pushed D&D players into becoming a cohesive worldwide community instead of individual groups playing/hiding in their basements. D&D's not a mystery anymore. Anyone can find the books in your local bookstore. It's all over media, social and otherwise. The 80's was a completely different story, and the mystery of the game created the perfect environment for the panic to take hold.

WotC is probably hoping it will. For every player they lose, they'd gain 2 more from the publicity. It would be funny if this was what triggered it because it sounds like the story is perfectly aligned with Christian belief. It teaches about moral choices and the consequences of falling for devils' deals.
