Rob demonstrates how to make an awesome geometric quilt using strips sets made out of 2.5 inch strips of precut fabric (jelly rolls). He used a Kona Cotton Wildberry Palette Roll Up by Robert Kaufman Fabrics.

The trick I use to keep my strip sets from curving is loosen the tension. Having the tension to tight is what makes your strip set curve. Anyway, I hope this info helps. I've been quilting almost 30 years, so I've learned a few little tricks. Good luck everyone.

Here’s a helpful hint: the warp that tends to happen in strip set happens during the pressing. If you take the time to use a yard stick to line up your strip set and have it straight before you press, it will never have a warp.

When sewing multiple longer strip strip sets , example 4 strips total, I usually do the following. Sew 2 together, the other 2 together, then the 2 sets of 2 together. More even weight distribution helps me. I do this when sewing quilt top together also.

He's referring to where they would fall on the colour wheel, the "reds" will be on the red side purple and the "blues" will be on the blue side of purple. A better way for him say it would be magenta and violet

I don't think the strips are long enough. I didn't make an actual prototype, but laid out some strips and used rulers to estimate and it looks like the strips are several inches too short. Using 4 strips instead of 5 it would probably work well, but the quilt would be less dramatic. Really good question/suggestion!
@marydouglas511

I've tried to make this quilt this week. At the beginning of this tutorial, Rob says to use one jelly roll, then the instructions in the link say to use two. So far, two of my strip sets have been at least 2 inches short. I've had to get a second jelly roll because some of the colors aren't diverse enough. Now I think I have to get a third just to be able to make enough strip sets. He also said that you need six strip sets. That should be six strip sets per colorway-so a total of 12 strip sets. You might need more strip sets though if your sets end up being too short!

Question: I’m a new quilter and this may be common knowledge but..why do you leave a 1/4 inch at the tip when cutting the strips? I’ve only cut strips sets into triangles a few times and never did that. Is that why my middles puff up when I sew the triangles together?

If you cut 2 dark and 1 light from each strip set you'll be short on the lights, right? You need 5 dark blocks and 4 light blocks which means 10 and 8 from each colorway. Out of 6 strip sets (yielding 18 triangles), 4 should be cut with 2 dark and 1 light and 2 with 2 light and 1 dark.

You need TWO of the jelly rolls to make this quilt. Unfortunately he says in the tutorial very clearly you only need one. I started making my version of this and just found out when I finished all my strip sets and realized it will only make 18 triangles. You need 36 triangles to make the quilt. Wish I had done the math sooner because I can’t find another of the jelly rolls of the same kind.
