Jenny Doan demonstrates how to make a beautiful scrap-busting quilt with hundreds of pretty little squares. This quilt can be constructed with scraps made into individual four patches, or it can be made with jelly roll strips sets stitched into big 16 blocks. Jenny made one quilt with her scraps and a second with a jelly roll from the Blue Ridge Mountain Batiks collection by Kathy Engle for Island Batik.

When I woke this morning to your new tutorial I actually cried. Once asked what motivated me to quilt..it was this quilt Yesterday I started a scrappy four square quilt from all my leftover bindings and scraps. A longer proces then using all 2,5" strips but inspired by sa loving memory of cuddling under a 4 square quilt with my great grandmother every night we were together. After 65 years still my warmest memories. Thank you for today's tutorial. It brought back so many memories .. all symbolized by this quilt

One more tip is to use a shorter stitch on these so that they don't unravel once you cut them. I do something similar when I am using up scraps.

Once you have a bunch of 2.5" squares, sew them onto 2.5" wide strips of background. When you have a bunch of strips with squares, cut them into pairs. Then just sew a bunch together, and soon you'll have a bunch of big squares. This would be great way of "warming up" before you start sewing your projects.

I love making all of the different designs to be found but like You said after a while it is good to get a break, especially when the matters of life have been busy/stressful. Patterns like these remind me of the simple but beautiful quilts that drew me to want to learn in the first place. Thank You :)

No, it's fun, as you're starting with two very big piles and are ending up with two little piles which lead to a great quilt top. Only the first two steps are annoying. But the method here is great, too, as I have lots of little fabric pieces that can be cut in stripes.

Ruth Schwartz I went to an estate sale several years ago and bought fabric and started pieces. There was a large box of individual 2 inch squares. The person had started sewing them together with no contrasting fabric in between the squares. I'm planning on taking these apart and make 4 square or nine square blocks. There are a lot of them. Also in this same box there were blocks for a grandma flower garden quilt. These were all hand sewn and very small and neat stitches All most afraid to start putting them together. I'll get up my nerve one of these days. Really like this video as it has inspired me to put these squares together now.

These colors are great together. I like this one because it's simple, easy, and BIG. I make a lot of Project Linus donation quilts, however, and their requirements are more like 40" x 60" for the little kids. Would you consider showing us a simple, easy, and small quilt? Thanks for all you do. You make the world a happier place.

I just put together the butterfly blocks from a long time ago MSQC tutorial and used beautiful island batiks in purples, blues, and pinks. Turning out so pretty. Nice and simple: A Classic beauty! Thank you for this tutorial, Jenny & MSQC team. I find sewing WOF length strips sometimes rather unwieldy. Knowing each full jelly roll strip gives you 16 squares, half a strip will produce 8. I think I’ll cut my strips at the fold and produce double the number of half-as-wide strip sets. It’ll give me more variety of fabric placement and be a bit easier for me to handle. (Also good for practicing seam-matching, excellent for beginners!).

I love this quilt! I have been working on a similar project except the squares are one inch. I sewed together one and a half inch strips and then cut them into an inch and a half. Then I sewed a block with all the same colors together. Each block had 144 squares. I sewed alternate colored sashing on each square and it turned out fabulous! I gave it away to one of my kids. I wish I could send you a picture. I also love that you are showing this side of you as a person who uses it all up. I knew that side of you existed, but you were keeping it for your own use! Thank you so much for sharing. This is the quilt I will make for Christmas for my five kids this year!

Very enjoyable tutorial and a beautiful and fun method. I inherited a huge box of over 1200 2" squares that had been cut and saved for a cathedral window quilt. I do not have the patience (or the expected lifespan!) to make that large of a cathedral window quilt, but I decided to make a postage stamp quilt (another name for this type of quilt). I did not use background squares in between, but just sewed all of my little squares together. I added some from my own fabric scraps and ended up with a nice bright scrappy quilt for the foot of the bed when you need a little extra cover. Very fun! (And my 2" squares were not all really 2", so the seams did not all meet - but that was fine with me, it is a little higglety-pigglety, but still very fun.)
