I'll show how I made a chimney support bracket for 10% of what it would cost if purchasing new. My design is much stronger. I'll also install it on my new chimney.
I included a list of parts needed as shown in this tutorial, See below.

Here is a previous video of a patio hearth I installed, in this video you will see this style chimney support installed only this time its mounted to the facia board of the shop. My point is this style of support is very versatile & can be useful beyond thew norm .. www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQo02...
First id like to mention the chimney here is a 6". For that I used a 36" long strap to wrap the chimney. An 8" chimney pipe may require a slightly longer strap. In the video I added an additional 24" strap for extra strength however I do not think this is necessary & suggest skipping that. I used all galvanized parts with the exception of a few zinc screws. It may be ideal to use galvanized lag bolts to secure the angle bracket into the roof. Hope this info was helpful. It was rather difficult to record when up on the roof top, it was windy. The chimney was installed the day before I installed the chimney support.
Parts list:
1.) 36" long metal strap www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&...
1.) 10' X 1/2" conduit pipe... To be cut into two equal lengths
1.) 10" X 3/4 conduit pipe... to also be cut into two equal lengths.
2.) 2.5" angle pieces that mount to the roof www.homedepot.com/p/Simpson-St...
2.) 1" long bolts & see below &
4.)nuts that secure to the strap thats mounted to the chimney
1.) 2" bolt & nut that fasten the strap together on the chimney
1.) tube of silicone or roofing tar or?
8.) 1 1/4 screws or lag bolts to secure the angled pieces to the roof.
2.) additional nuts & bolts 1" to fasten the lower portion of the conduit piece to the bracket
4.) 1/2" self tapping screws

OMG..you are awesome. This is exactly what I wanted to do, seeing as my chimney is attached with ugly cable that is not only an eye sore but not the most secure option. I just didn't even know where to start but knew there was a way to diy on the cheap. Thank you so much for making this video!

Mike you helped me out. I'm a fabricator welder by trade so my go to automatically goes to steel and sometimes my thoughts r trapped in a box metiforically speaking. Your video is so much easier because facing parts from steel is time consuming and can be a pain in the ass. On another note the brackets you can buy r so damn over priced. It's bad enough all the pipe costs a fortune. Thanks bud

Suggest the bolts for the extra strap be made with flat head bolts to the inside so you don't end up wearing a hole from the hex head bolt into the chimney pipe.

It's all great up until when you connect it to the shingles/tiles of your roof, would u not take them up and secure it to a roof perlin and then flash around it to keep out water. Or at least use some long screws, any thoughts, tradesmen?

Thank you Mike. I had an extra wall mounting strap left over after installing my pellet stove chimney so all I had to do was bend the mounting tabs and attach the emt and roof mounts. Boom badda bing. Just what I was looking for. My chimneys only about 4' above the roof but we have a lot of 50 mph gusts so for $10 it's a no brainer.

you got 4-24" , what did you use the others for? Why does it need to be telescoping? Can't you just cut to the right length? Why are you not looking for rafters to tie it into? you're just screwing it into 1/2"plywood. You can use selfsealing screws, silicone wont last when exposed to the weather. Great vid!
@paulreader1777

Telescoping seems like a good idea to me. Silicone repair to one of my roof tiles has lasted over 15 years now but is probably due for replacement soon.

isnt a 10 footer EMT like 10 bucks? so you used 4 and some simpson strapping. that would be like 50-60 bucks? also wouldnt the cut sections rust since it is only zinc plated? the store bought support is stainless steel so it looks good forever
@12345mike6789
@12345mike6789 Жыл бұрын
when I made this video the price was less than $6 per 10 foot section. I cut the 10 footers in half so it was two 10' pieces total for around 12 bucks.

Tons of little B#$%&'s complaining about the music now. 5 years ago only 1 person. Everyone was nice and said thank you only 5 years ago. BS on all that costing only $12! 3/4 is over $4 a stick and 1/2" is about $3 so already it is $14 plus brackets and strap and hardware ...I am guessing at least twice your 12 bucks...still a good deal but why lie?

This video was super helpful. It inspired me to build one myself. I live in Alaska where prices are higher than the lower 48. I constructed this project and it cost me $25. I call that a good deal and it was fun to construct it. To purchase a ready made one would have been $80. Prices change through time and even from location to location. That Mike was able to construct it for $12 is great. I have no problem with that. Mike, thanks for making this video.
