The Misconception of "Perfect" Form

Hybrid Calisthenics

13 күн бұрын

Just giving some thoughts on perfect form vs "intentional" form!
While there are some foundational guidelines, most exercises may have more wiggle room than we may realize.
An example might be elbow flare during pushups. While 30 degrees - 45 degrees is often given as a form tip, other angles may not necessarily be "wrong." They have different purposes.
I don't necessarily mean this in a feel-good type of way. While there may not be bad or good exercises (maybe), there are better and worse exercises -depending on your goal! Sometimes far better or far worse.
With this in mind, there may also be some form tips that are good guidelines to follow - especially while we're starting. There may also be exercise forms that are technically okay but we don't really need.
Another example might be deadlifts. The cue is almost always to keep a fairly neutral back during deadlifts, but many people round slightly when pursuing higher numbers. This may work for them, but the intent is usually to maintain a neutral back.
Just sharing some examples of intentional form and how "ideal" technique might depend on our training or performance goals! Have a wonderful day.

Sometimes I stop to think about how many fitness influencers keep trying to push people to buy expensive stuff that COULD be useful, meanwhile our friend Hampton here casually works out at a public park playground 😂, this is the gold standard. Wishing beautiful days to everyone here, cheers.

For quite some time I would pick up and drop exercise because I would fret so much over form. Why take all this time to work out if I am just going to injure myself and take on prolonged pain? It, along with the stress of building a proper routine, would become so overwhelming. The anxiety of it was never quelled by the constant online bickering of right, wrong, and what was once wrong, but is now right. I really appreciate this video, your channel, and the app (the babysteps, focusing on core mechanics before elevating, is what I needed) more than you know. Have a beautiful day, king.

Great video and very interesting ideas put on the table. I feel like it's important to build a good base of proper form, and once that's become more or less natural to you, make changes to it depending on your goals. For some people gym is but routine and a matter of health and looks, in their case keeping a good form is probably enough. But then there's us people that like having fun and training weird skill, and for us varying from the norm is but the path to achieve our weird, monkey exercises. I also wanna note that there's some cases were people have to go out of proper form to avoid injury or to let themselves get started with exercising or even moving. I don't mean we should just ignore "proper" form, but sometimes we need to be lax with it so we can end up developing enough body consciousness to achieve that proper form.

I really like these tips. Personally, I always try to listen to my body when testing new movements or exercises. If something feels painful, I reconsider how the exercise should work, and see if I can find small tweaks so that it doesn't trigger pain. Or an easier level, because perhaps the muscles just aren't strong enough for that particular variation.

The press-up with the elbows going straight out to the sides (in addition to the hands placed so that the fingers point horizontally inward, if not slightly down) is pretty much what you're supposed to do during the shot-put. There it's actually in the official rules that your elbow must not drop below the horizontal.

Id recommend trying to do challenges as well. Such as the sally up sally down song. Doing things that you're told to do, such as in the song, is easier than just choosing to do that many more reps. Am example in the sally up sally down song is that they tell you when to do the push ups and you have a clear goal in mind. And if you can the challenge, either try a harder one or do that challenge to x2.

Great video as always! There is one off topic question that bothers me tough. 😅 Why leave the teabag in your cup? I've seen it in many american tv productions and start to think, that it's maybe a cultural thing. Because if i want a strong tea, i'd rather use 2 teabags and take it out, than let 1 steep the whole time while drinking. Especially green tea get's very bitter when you let it steep for longer than a couple minutes.

Interesting about the knees and I can attest to the outward pressure damaging your knees. I played roller derby and a move called plowing requires you to turn your skate inward while squatting. Same position for blocking while you have weight applied and quick movements. There’s a joke that we donated our knees to derby. I unfortunately have torn meniscus in both knees.

If you really want to find your best elbow position for push-ups, do and release push-ups wear when your chest touches the ground pick your hands up and then explode back up. Typically this fixes the neurological comfort zone of trying to flare the elbows out because when your body isn't comfortable in a certain position it will try to limit you in that range which is why flaring the elbows doesn't get you as deep unless you practice such a thing
