@ Armchair Mechanics Network fun fact......the 1973/74 455 Super Duty engines came stock with an 80psi oil pump.....yes 80psi. What many, including Pontiac learned was on cold start ups, especially if you revved it up any, the oil pressure would be so high it would blow out the o ring seal on the oil filter. The fix from the dealer and for us do it yourselfers was to put a Ram Air 3 oil pump in which was a 60psi pump and no more issues. The 455SD motor was nothing like any other poncho motor......special block for extra rigidity, bullet proof rods, etc. Really made by Pontiac for sustained, reliable high rpm operation where as on any other 455 you ran high rpm and bye bye rod bearing/s and sometimes a main bearing. But having once owned a 1973 455SD TA it was interesting to learn about the many special things stuffed into those motors, and the original issues such as that monster oil pump they had to downsize.

Was replacing the oil pan gasket on my '01 2500 6.0L LS, and the o-ring with it. Wanted to add the extra shoulder and bolt to the pick tube at the pump. My tube had a spot welded "keeper" attached to the side of the tube, to keep the bolt-up ring from rotating during install (I guess). I had to grind it off, and then modify the bolt-up ring so that the extra Melling shoulder would fit. And getting it installed was extra fun too.

Just be careful how much you shim it. A couple of small washers should do the trick. I put too many in and my oil pressure was so high, I couldn’t keep from blowing the oil filter o-ring out. And if you have a high volume pump, high pressure is not a good thing because it can suck the pan dry before the oil can even drain back down to the pickup tube.

The volume pressure relationship is the exact same as Ohms law in electricity the more voltage (pressure) the more current flow (volume) you get in a circuit bypass valves act the same way zener diodes act. I should clarify that pumps do not make or create pressure at all they only make or create flow in the circuit or a volume of displacement and it is the restriction to this flow that creates the pressure that being said if you put a high flowing pump on a restricted flowing system it will seem as though the pump was the reason for the pressure increase. Pressure reliefs valves also come into play in these simple hydraulic systems
@armchairmechanicsnetwork9839

Well said! Thank you. All adding shims under the pressure relief spring does is put more tension in the spring to hold the bypass closed longer before the pressure overcomes the spring pressure and opens the bypass.

I've got an 05 Chevy Silverado 1500 2wd with an LM7 5.3 Vortec. Work truck, high mileage about 300,000. I put in a new timing gear set, and Melling HV pump due to next to no oil pressure im sure due to larger bearing clearances from age and wear. I managed to get the minimum 7 psi at 700 rpm at idle so the warning message is gone and it climbs petty good up to a little more than 20 psi around 45 mph as the engine rpms climb but id really like a little more oil pressure at idle. I put in a melling hv pump to try to help with this so my questions are this: 1, would adding a couple of washers to the pump spring be ok and would it help oil pressure and 2, do you know if my pan would have the secondary oil pressure bypass? Like I said, it's a basic LM7 5.3 Vortec 5300 in a basic model work truck, ext cab long bed Silverado 1500 2wd. Thanks for your insight in advance. Ps. I did put the little brace on the other bolt hole at pick up tube O ring opening..

As long as you aren’t running high RPM, you should be ok to run a couple washers under the bypass spring. But your best bet is the high pressure spring in a standard pump. The high volume pump with high pressure will pump the oil pan dry, aerate the oil, and ruin the bearings, especially at higher rpm.

@Armchair Mechanics Network im usually running low RPM. I went with the Melling HV pump because Im sure the clearances in bearings have gotten more expanded due to wear. It's my work truck and the engine has 314 K miles on it. Im trying to wring every mile out of her before I have to rebuild or replace the engine. Im a private contractor and have to provide everything for my work , as such , Im also the repair shop since I own the truck lol. High volume oil pumps are for race engines. The reason you need a high volume pump in a raslce engine is because the main bearings have .002"-.003" clearance. Which helps achieve higher rpm. If ypure only reving to 4k you dont need that much clearance or a high volume pump. A hogh vol pump is parasitic to the hp. So dont do ot if you dont have high clearance bearings. If you do have large clearance in main bearings, use hi vol pump. If you have drain back issues, open up the oil drain ports and round them, similar to porting heads. If you've done all of this, you're already going to be running a high volume oil pan, or a dry sump. The object with any of this, is jot to get high oil pressure. You just want to keep it oiled when at higher rpm with extra clearance. Dont do this to your street engine. You will only see power loss with no benefits, and possibly cause other issues. High pressure has no benefit but can cause gasket failure. If you have low oil pressure in a high mileage engine, its likely due to worn bearings. A high volume pump would be appropriate in this case, but only as a band-aid fix.
@armchairmechanicsnetwork9839
@armchairmechanicsnetwork9839 5 ай бұрын
That makes complete sense. GM put the high volume pumps on the DOD motors because of all the solenoids that run the DOD lifters. Dry sump is really the ultimate way to go for a race motor.

The only thing that helps you achieve high rpms is a good lightweight valvetrain and and a camshaft. Obviously heads that will flow. I honestly can’t wrap my head around why someone would intentionally make more slack in the bearings and think that it helps the engine spin faster. I doubt any builder worth his salt does that. Heads and camshaft make the engine rev
@roscosnyder3584
@roscosnyder3584 4 ай бұрын
@dreece2000 the reason is because the crank doesn't touch the bearings while running, when working properly. It rides on a film of oil, said oil gets thinner as it gets hotter at higher rpms. Which increases oil friction. Hence larger clearances. This is a well known practice in race engines. Also, higher rpm, causes higher heat which causes more expansion of the crankshaft. I've been a professional tech for over 23 years, but don't take my word for it. Read up on it.
@stevenbelue5496
@stevenbelue5496 Ай бұрын
@@dreece2000the more horsepower you make the more things move around(more flex and distortion of the crank and block-main bores) when your making 1k-2k hp its trying to push the crank right out the bottom, the main bores while round or actually wider at the parting line with no tension become egg shaped when its making steam and the horizontal sides of the bore at the parting line get pulled inwards loosing clearance and the vertical clearances grow because its trying to put the crank on the ground. Take a belt or rope and laying it on a flat surface in a perfectly round circle then push outward on one side and thats exactly whats happening with main bores under extreme horsepower and the reason for extra clearance in high horsepower, high rpm situations.

I have heard swimming it will raise your oil pressure like at all rpm but if it's just the bypass that doesn't make sense to me right it should be just able to get higher before it bypasses
@armchairmechanicsnetwork9839
@armchairmechanicsnetwork9839 Жыл бұрын
Correct. The bypass is set to open at a given pressure. Shimming the spring will effectively stiffen the spring with a preload. But, the faster you turn the pump, the more oil it pumps. The bypass is not a on or off valve. Therefore the pressure will reach higher pressures as the pump moves faster before the bypass is fully opened. Just remember that some LS motors have a bypass that is built into the pan as well, and that one is more difficult to modify, so bypass pressure will remain stock if you have both and only shim the pump.

@armchairmechanicsnetwork9839 hahaha. I have a similar story. I told my fellow mopar friend about how you can put a Direct Connection high pressure relief spring in the oil pump to boost your oil pressure. Now I thought I made it clear to use a DC spring for an LA engine in an LA engine, and the DC HEMI spring in B/RB engines. Well, there must have been communication failure, because Tony put a HEMI spring in his LA oil pump which is no small feat because the HEMI spring is like a 1/2" longer than the LA spring. Anyway, he went to fire it up and his 120# oil pressure gauge needle did a full revolution and was looking for another, when the oil filter basically exploded and sprayed 5qts of fresh oil absolutely EVERYWHERE! Funny to me, & maybe to him, now, 50yrs later, but he wasn't laughing then. No, he wasn't.
